What’s actually slowing this PC down?

There is no single Windows or graphics-card setting that prevents crashes on every PC. The most reliable approach is to establish a stable baseline, identify whether the game or the whole PC is failing, and test one change at a time. Start by undoing custom CPU, memory, or GPU tuning if you suspect instability; then check the game, Windows, and the appropriate PC-maker or graphics driver before trying reversible game-level changes.
First identify what is crashing
A game that exits to the desktop calls for different troubleshooting than a full-system freeze, blue screen, graphics-driver reset, or unexpected Windows restart. Microsoft notes that unexpected restarts can involve hardware, a device driver, or software, so a system-wide failure should not be treated as a graphics-quality problem alone. See Microsoft’s guidance for unexpected restarts and stop-code errors.
- Record the game, exact error text or code, what you were doing, and whether the same failure can be reproduced.
- Note recent changes, such as a game patch, driver update, new peripheral, or changed overclock.
- Check the game publisher’s support page for a known issue or patch before changing several system settings at once.
Restore a stable baseline before tuning
If you have overclocked the CPU, system memory, or GPU, temporarily return the components to their normal defaults and retry the same scenario. This is a diagnostic comparison, not a claim that every overclock is unsafe. If stability changes, the previous tuning is implicated, but that result alone does not identify which component or setting caused the problem.
AMD advises checking your motherboard or tuning-software instructions for restoring defaults in its system stability troubleshooting tips. NVIDIA likewise recommends returning component clocks to defaults when checking for overclock-related instability, and notes that lowering GPU clocks can help in some cases in its graphics-card troubleshooting guide. Avoid applying a universal undervolt or clock offset: the right values depend on the specific hardware.

Try reversible game-level changes
When only one game is affected, install any available game update and test a lower graphics setting or windowed mode. Change one setting at a time, then repeat the same gameplay or sequence so you can tell whether that change mattered. Intel’s guidance is conditional: “If you are running the game for the first time on your current configuration, consider reducing the in-game settings or running the game in windowed mode.” These are possible troubleshooting tests, not guaranteed crash fixes. See Intel’s troubleshooting guidance for flickering, crashing, and common game issues.
Check Windows and the graphics driver
Install relevant Windows updates and check for driver updates, but identify both your exact GPU and PC model before choosing a graphics package. Intel recommends using the computer manufacturer’s graphics driver when one is provided, because a generic driver may not include OEM customizations. Start at the PC maker’s support page and compare its available driver with the graphics vendor’s release notes. Intel explains the OEM-driver consideration in its game troubleshooting guidance.

If the problem began immediately after a driver update, check that version’s release notes for relevant known issues. When a driver problem or documented regression is plausible, a rollback to the last working driver may be a more targeted test than changing unrelated settings; AMD recommends returning to the last driver that worked when a known issue has no fix in its stability troubleshooting tips.
Use a clean driver installation only when it fits the symptoms
A clean installation can remove old driver files and reset graphics settings, so it is a troubleshooting step rather than routine maintenance. Save custom profiles first if you need them. Intel says its clean-install procedure removes old drivers, resets Intel graphics settings, and clears the shader cache; it also cautions that OEM systems may use customized packages. Follow the instructions for your exact GPU and Windows version in Intel’s clean-install guide. AMD documents a Factory Reset option during Radeon Software installation in its Windows installation instructions.

Isolate conflicts from startup software
If the crash persists and a background utility or service may be involved, use Windows clean boot to test. Microsoft describes it this way: “A clean boot starts Windows with only essential drivers and startup programs.” Clean boot is for diagnosis; some features may be temporarily unavailable while non-Microsoft services and startup apps are disabled.
- Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot procedure for Windows.
- Write down what you disable, then launch the affected game and try to reproduce the same failure.
- If the crash disappears, re-enable services and startup apps systematically—by groups, then individually as needed—to identify the conflict.
- Restore normal startup after the test. Microsoft’s clean-boot instructions explain how to return Windows to its usual startup behavior.
Escalate when Windows itself freezes or restarts
For a full-system freeze, blue screen, or unexpected restart, use Windows’ recovery guidance rather than treating the issue as a game setting. Start with the least disruptive option that applies, and protect important files before choosing a recovery option that could remove data. Microsoft describes the available choices and their effects in Recovery options in Windows; its separate Windows startup settings guidance notes that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. PCs still running Windows 10 no longer receive free updates, technical support, or security fixes.

Inspect cooling only when there is a reason
Visible dust buildup or unusually loud fans can justify checking the PC’s cooling, but cleaning is not a general fix for software crashes. NVIDIA’s basic graphics-card troubleshooting guide suggests checking for dust and carefully using safe compressed-air dust removers. Follow the PC maker’s instructions, and do not open the system or handle components unless you are comfortable doing so.

| Test | What it can help isolate | Disruption |
|---|---|---|
| Lower one in-game setting or switch to windowed mode | A game-specific configuration issue | Low; easy to reverse |
| Return custom CPU, memory, or GPU tuning to defaults | Whether custom tuning is associated with instability | Reversible; use the hardware or software instructions |
| Clean boot | A conflict with a non-Microsoft service or startup app | Temporary change to startup behavior; restore normal startup after testing |
| Clean driver installation or rollback | A plausible graphics-driver issue or regression | Resets driver state or changes driver version; preserve needed profiles |
| Windows recovery | A broader Windows startup or system problem | Varies by option; some choices can remove data |
These steps do not establish a universal crash-reduction percentage; the available guidance is procedural, not a measured comparison of PC settings. Microsoft’s Windows performance tips can help with general performance, but a crash still needs diagnosis based on its symptoms.
