Start with the backpack’s sewn-in care label or instructions for its exact model. If those instructions allow spot cleaning, use a damp cloth and mild soap, rinse away residue, and air-dry the bag completely. Don’t assume that a water-resistant backpack can be machine-washed or soaked: its coating and care requirements vary by manufacturer.
Why water-resistant backpacks need careful cleaning
A backpack’s water resistance may come from more than one layer. Eastpak says its water-resistant bags have an internal polyurethane (PU) coating and an external durable water repellent (DWR) treatment, and warns that both are delicate (Eastpak care guidance). Harsh washing or drying can harm these layers, as well as the bag’s padding, seams, or structure.
Instructions are not universal. Eastpak, Deuter, and Rab publish different care recommendations, so use the label or model-specific guidance for your own pack before choosing a cleaning method.
Choose spot cleaning or hand washing

If the label does not clearly allow immersion, do not treat hand washing as automatically safe. Use spot cleaning or contact the manufacturer for model-specific advice.

How to spot-clean the backpack
- Empty it. Remove the laptop, accessories, and loose contents. Check pockets and compartments so nothing is left inside.
- Remove loose dirt. Brush or wipe away dust and dry soil before adding water. A soft-bristled brush can help with fabric texture; use a light touch.
- Test a small area. Dampen a clean cloth and add a little mild soap. Try it on an inconspicuous area first, especially if the fabric is colored or coated.
- Clean the stain gently. Dab rather than saturating the fabric. For stubborn marks, Eastpak describes dabbing a water-and-neutral-soap mixture and gently scrubbing. Avoid aggressive scrubbing that could stress the fabric or finish (Eastpak).
- Remove soap residue. Wipe the cleaned area with a fresh cloth dampened with clean water. Eastpak recommends thorough rinsing after cleaning (Eastpak).
Use a mild technical fabric cleaner only if the backpack’s care instructions allow it. A cleaner recommended for one brand is not automatically suitable for another bag’s coating.
Hand-wash only when the manufacturer allows it
If the exact care instructions permit a deeper clean, follow their water temperature and cleaner guidance rather than improvising. For example, Eastpak recommends cold water and gentle detergent for its bags, while Deuter recommends pH-neutral soap or shower gel and brushing stains (Eastpak; Deuter). Those are brand-specific directions, not permission to soak every fabric laptop backpack.

What not to do
- Don’t assume a washing machine is safe. Deuter warns that machine washing can damage a backpack’s PU coating; Rab says not to machine-wash its backpacks (Deuter; Rab).
- Don’t tumble-dry the pack. Deuter warns against tumble drying because it can damage the PU coating, and Rab also prohibits it for its backpacks (Deuter; Rab).
- Don’t use solvents or dry cleaning unless the manufacturer explicitly directs you to. Rab says not to dry-clean its backpacks or use solvents (Rab).
- Don’t apply a random waterproofing product. Reproofing products may suit some packs but may not be compatible with every fabric or coating.
Air-dry the backpack fully
Let the cleaned bag dry completely in a ventilated place before using or storing it. Follow the product’s directions for how to position it: Eastpak says to lay its bags flat away from direct sunlight, while Rab recommends hanging its backpacks away from direct sunlight, radiators, and other heat sources (Eastpak; Rab). Do not substitute a heater or dryer for air drying.

Reproofing is optional and depends on the backpack. Rab says DWR wears down over time and recommends a spray-on reproofer after washing, applied while the fabric is damp and according to the product directions. Eastpak also recommends a water-repellent product for its water-resistant bags (Rab; Eastpak).

Before applying a fabric water-repellent spray to another brand’s backpack, confirm that the manufacturer considers it compatible. Reproofing is not a substitute for cleaning instructions and should not be treated as a universal requirement.
