What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A slow startup can come from apps that launch automatically, other background activity, limited storage, outdated software, aging hardware, or—on a Mac—a login item or startup-disk issue. First note where the delay happens: before sign-in, while signing in, or after the desktop appears. Then use the matching, reversible checks below; no single step is guaranteed to speed up every computer.
First, identify when the delay happens
- Before the sign-in screen: focus on startup and disk-related checks. On a Mac, Apple provides a separate procedure for a Mac that stops or delays while starting.
- During sign-in or just after it: apps that open automatically may be contributing. Review startup apps on Windows or login items on a Mac.
- After the desktop appears: broader causes such as background activity, low storage, outdated software, or hardware limits may be more relevant.
These symptoms help choose what to check, but they do not identify a cause by themselves. The vendor guidance below describes troubleshooting options, not a diagnosis of your particular computer.
Windows: review apps that launch at sign-in
Microsoft says, “Apps that run at startup can slow boot time and increase background usage.” In Windows 10 and Windows 11, review the list in either Settings or Task Manager:
- Open Settings > Apps > Startup, or open Task Manager and select Startup apps.
- Use Task Manager’s startup-impact information to help prioritize which entries to review.
- Turn off only apps you recognize and do not need to open immediately when you sign in. Restart and see whether the startup experience changes.
Do not disable security software, drivers, or unfamiliar entries indiscriminately. Some startup items are configured elsewhere, and Microsoft warns that registry changes can have unintended consequences; registry editing is not a routine first step for this problem. See Microsoft’s guide to configuring startup applications in Windows.

Windows: check updates, storage, and background activity
If changing startup apps does not address the delay—or the computer remains sluggish after sign-in—check the broader performance basics Microsoft recommends:
- Install available Windows updates. Updates can address software issues and keep the system current.
- Free storage if the drive is nearly full. Remove files or apps you no longer need, taking care not to delete anything important.
- Reduce unnecessary background activity. Close or uninstall apps you do not use, and review which apps are running.
These steps may improve overall performance, but they do not guarantee a faster boot. Microsoft notes that software changes may yield limited improvement on older PCs whose hardware no longer meets modern performance needs. Its performance page states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; check current Microsoft guidance if you still use Windows 10, since support and upgrade details can change. See Microsoft’s Windows performance tips.

Windows: use a clean boot only to isolate a persistent conflict
A clean boot starts Windows with non-Microsoft services and startup items disabled so you can test whether background software is involved. It is an advanced troubleshooting step, not the first thing to try: disabling services can temporarily remove functionality.
- Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot procedure, using System Configuration to disable non-Microsoft services and manage startup items as directed.
- Keep a record of what you change. Test whether the startup problem remains in the clean-boot state.
- When testing is complete, follow Microsoft’s reset procedure to restore normal startup rather than leaving services or startup items disabled.
If the delay disappears, that points toward a conflict among background software, but does not by itself identify which item is responsible. On a work-managed device, network policy may prevent this procedure. Microsoft also warns that changing advanced boot options can make a computer unusable; use System Configuration and Microsoft’s guidance rather than experimenting with advanced boot settings.

Mac: test login items separately from startup-disk issues
If the delay occurs as you sign in
Apple recommends testing whether login items are responsible. Record the current items first so you can restore them if needed.
- Open System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions.
- Remove the listed login items, then restart the Mac.
- If startup improves, add the items back one at a time, restarting as needed, until the problem returns. The last item added is a useful lead for further troubleshooting.
See Apple’s guide to removing login items to resolve startup problems.

If the Mac delays or stops before sign-in
This is a different problem from apps opening at login. Apple says the startup disk may need to be selected or repaired. To check the selected disk, open System Settings > General > Startup Disk and choose the appropriate startup disk. For repair steps, follow Apple’s guide, If your Mac stops or delays while starting up.

An older Windows PC with outdated hardware may not improve much from software steps. Microsoft says upgrading may be the best long-term option in that situation, but its guidance does not establish that any particular computer needs a new SSD, more memory, or replacement.

Before buying a part, identify the exact computer model and check its service documentation or consult a qualified repair source for compatibility. The same caution applies before deciding that replacement is necessary: a slow startup alone does not identify which component, if any, is the limiting factor.
