Watts tell you how much power the bulb uses, not how much light it gives off. For a straightforward replacement, start with the old bulb’s useful output, then check the new bulb’s lumen rating, color temperature, fit, and dimmer compatibility.
Choose brightness by lumens, not watts
Lumens (lm) measure the light a bulb produces. Watts (W) measure the electrical power it consumes. When replacing an incandescent bulb, use its familiar wattage as a rough reference, but compare the LED’s lumen figure to confirm the output.
ENERGY STAR’s guide lists these minimum brightness values for incandescent replacements:

These are replacement equivalences, not room-by-room lighting design targets. If an existing bulb gives enough light, use its lumen output as your starting point. For a 60 W incandescent replacement, for example, look for at least 800 lumens. Choose color temperature by Kelvin
Kelvin (K), also called correlated color temperature (CCT), describes a lamp’s apparent light color—not its brightness. Lower values look warmer and more yellow; higher values look cooler and bluer. Color names such as “soft white,” “warm white,” “cool white,” and “daylight” are shorthand, so check the package’s Kelvin figure rather than relying on the label alone.
The U.S. Department of Energy gives these typical examples. They are starting points, not fixed rules for every room:

If you like the current room lighting, matching the existing bulbs’ Kelvin rating is a safe starting point. DOE notes that a large shift—for example, from 2,700 K to 4,100 K—is noticeable and may leave occupants dissatisfied. See the DOE guide to purchasing energy-efficient light bulbs.
Check the bulb and fixture before buying
A bulb can have the right brightness and color but still be unsuitable for the fixture. Check the package and fixture requirements for:

- Base and shape: Make sure the bulb fits the socket and the available space.
- Lumens and Kelvin: Confirm the output and light color you want.
- Energy use and stated life: Compare the package details when weighing options.
- Dimmability: If you need to dim the bulb, confirm that it is dimmable and check compatibility with the specific dimmer. Not every LED works well with every dimmer.
For recessed lights and downlights
Check the downlight’s requirements, the dimmer, and whether the bulb or retrofit is rated for contact with insulation. ENERGY STAR says to use an IC-rated model if insulation touches the downlight. A non-IC model generally needs at least 3 inches of clearance from insulation. Some LED products change color as they dim; others let you select a color temperature. DOE distinguishes warm-dim products, which become warmer as they dim, from white-tunable products, which let users switch between warm and cool white. These features and their controls vary by product. Check the bulb’s packaging or documentation for its behavior and confirm that it works with the intended control. A quick selection process
- Match the needed output: Check the old bulb’s lumens if available. Otherwise, use its incandescent wattage as a rough reference and compare it with ENERGY STAR’s minimum lumen guide.
- Pick the light appearance: Choose a Kelvin rating that suits the room and, if you like the current look, stays close to the existing bulbs.
- Verify the fit: Check base, shape, and fixture application.
- Confirm controls and installation: Check dimmer compatibility; for recessed lighting, verify IC and other fixture requirements.
- Compare the package: Review brightness, light appearance, energy use, and stated life before choosing.
