Choose PowerPoint desktop when you need a self-running presentation or a documented export to MP4, WMV, or PowerPoint Show format. Both can handle ordinary photo slideshows; the deciding factors are collaboration, playback, delivery format, and which PowerPoint version you use.
At a glance: which app fits your slideshow?
| Your priority | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Collaborating in a browser and keeping the deck in Google Drive | Google Slides | Slides saves automatically in Drive and supports editing with collaborators. Google says anyone with a Google Account can create in Slides: Google Slides. |
| Unattended playback or a video file | PowerPoint desktop | Microsoft lists self-running presentations for PC and Mac, and documents MP4 and WMV export for supported desktop releases: Microsoft: Turn your presentation into a video. |
| Making a simple photo-and-caption deck | Either | Both support adding pictures. Google documents image insertion from a computer, Drive, Google Photos, and the web; Microsoft’s feature matrix lists picture insertion across desktop, web, and mobile platforms: Microsoft: Compare PowerPoint features on different platforms and Google: Work with Microsoft Office files. |
| Opening an existing PowerPoint deck in Google Slides | Google Slides can do it; test a copy first | Google supports opening and editing Office files, but its documentation does not guarantee that every effect or media element will transfer exactly: Google: Work with Microsoft Office files. |
How photos, saving, and collaboration differ
Google Slides: Drive-centered editing
Google Slides can insert images by dragging them onto a slide or using Insert > Image. Google lists sources including a computer, Drive, Google Photos, and the web. Work saves automatically in Drive as you edit. If you need to work without a connection, Google says to enable offline editing in Drive settings and mark the relevant files available offline; simply opening Slides does not establish offline access. See Google’s Office-file and Slides guidance.
Google’s product page says anyone with a Google Account can create in Slides. Some recording and speaker spotlight features, however, are limited to eligible Workspace plans, and Gemini’s “help me visualize” capability is an add-on. Availability depends on the account and plan; check current eligibility rather than assuming a feature is included: Google Slides product information.
PowerPoint: more platform-specific controls
PowerPoint can add pictures on PC, web, Mac, Android, and iOS, but not every picture or slideshow control is available everywhere. Microsoft’s comparison lists online picture insertion for PC, web, and Mac, while picture compression is listed for PC and Mac—not web or mobile. It lists real-time co-authoring for PC, web, Mac, and iOS. These are platform-level distinctions, not a guarantee for every license or software update; the feature matrix describes itself as non-comprehensive: Microsoft’s platform comparison.

Use PowerPoint desktop for a self-running slideshow
Microsoft’s comparison lists self-running presentations for PowerPoint on PC and Mac, but not for PowerPoint for the web or the listed mobile apps. If a slideshow must advance unattended, confirm that your desktop edition includes the required setting before building around it. Do not assume that the web or mobile app has the same controls: Microsoft’s PowerPoint feature comparison.
Export a PowerPoint deck as a video
For Microsoft 365 and PowerPoint 2024, 2021, 2019, and 2016 desktop releases named on Microsoft’s support page, the documented export formats are MP4 and WMV. You can use recorded timings and narration or choose a duration for each slide. If recorded timings are not used, the documented default is five seconds per slide; change it if photos need more viewing time. The setting is an export default, not a recommended pace for every album.

Save a file that opens directly in slideshow mode
If you want recipients to open a PowerPoint file in presentation mode rather than editing view, save it as a PPSX PowerPoint Show. Microsoft says a PowerPoint Show opens full-screen in Slide Show. This is useful for handing off a presentation file, but it is not a video export: Microsoft’s export and PowerPoint Show instructions.
Google confirms recording features for some eligible Workspace plans, but its cited product information does not establish a general MP4 export workflow. If an MP4 is a required deliverable, PowerPoint desktop has the documented path in the sources above.

Opening a PowerPoint slideshow in Google Slides
Google Slides can open and edit Microsoft Office presentations from Drive. Depending on the workflow, you can edit the Office file in Slides or convert it. For a deck with only photos and basic text, importing a copy is a reasonable way to try the browser workflow. For a presentation that relies on particular transitions, animations, embedded media, or other PowerPoint-specific behavior, inspect the imported deck before using it; Google’s guidance confirms file support, not perfect fidelity for every feature: Google’s Office-file guidance.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- The brilliant green laser pointer is powerful and easy to see, even on LCD and plasma displays and in brightly lit rooms.
- The LCD display with timer lets you manage your time with silent, vibrating alerts and controls that are easy to set and adjust–-you’ll focus on your presentation, not the clock.
- With a range of up to 100 feet (30 meters), you can enjoy the freedom to move around the room and mingle with your audience for greater impact. A reception-level indicator ensures you don’t wander too far.
- The intuitive slideshow controls help you navigate through your presentation with confidence. Buttons are easy to find by touch. The smooth contours feel great in your hand. You’ll be in control from the first slide to the last.
- A storable plug-and-play wireless receiver makes it simple to get started—just plug the receiver into a USB port and use it right away. There’s no software to install. When you’re through, the receiver stores inside the presenter to make packing up easy.
- Make a copy of the PowerPoint file so the original remains untouched.
- Open the copy from Google Drive with Google Slides, or convert it if you want a native Slides file.
- Review the full slideshow, especially transitions, animations, and media playback, rather than checking only the slide thumbnails.
- Test the presentation on the device and in the delivery format you plan to use.
Make the choice based on how the slideshow will be used
- Choose Google Slides if shared browser editing, automatic Drive saving, or working within a Google-centered setup matters most.
- Choose PowerPoint desktop if you need unattended playback, a PPSX that opens in slideshow mode, or an MP4/WMV export.
- Use either for a straightforward deck of photos and captions; choose based on where the people editing it work and how you will present it.
- Check the exact app and account before committing to a platform-dependent feature. PowerPoint’s desktop, web, and mobile feature sets differ, and some Google Slides recording or AI features depend on Workspace eligibility or an add-on.
