Thick ice that stays in place or keeps coming back is different. Check the room temperature, airflow, filter, settings and any error code first; if icing persists after those checks, contact the manufacturer or a qualified service provider.
When is frost normal, and when is it a problem?
The evaporator coil is cold so it can draw moisture from the air. Under some normal operating conditions, that can produce a light coating of frost. Frigidaire explains this on its Dehumidifier – Frost Buildup page. Some units use a coil sensor to pause the compressor while the fan continues running, allowing the frost to melt; follow your model’s manual for its defrost behavior.
A light startup coating is also described as normal in GE Appliances’ Dehumidifier – Ideal Operating Conditions guidance. GE says that coating should disappear within 30 to 60 minutes under normal conditions. Haier says first-use or seasonal icing on its units usually clears within 60 minutes unless the room is below 60°F, according to its dehumidifier frost guidance. These are manufacturer-specific expectations, not universal timers.
Heavy ice, frost that does not clear as expected, or ice that repeatedly returns warrants troubleshooting. Frost alone does not identify a particular failed part.

What should you check first?
- Find the model number. Check the label on the unit and use the owner’s manual for that exact model. Temperature limits, clearance requirements and defrost instructions vary.
- Check the room temperature. Compare it with the manual’s operating range. GE says its dehumidifiers ordinarily do not operate satisfactorily below 41°F, while other manufacturers publish different limits for different products. Do not treat any one figure as a universal cutoff.
- Restore airflow. Make sure the air intake and outlet are not blocked, and provide the clearance specified in the manual. GE recommends at least 18 inches of air space on all sides in its operating guidance; another model may specify something different.
- Inspect the filter. Clean or replace it as the manual directs. A dirty filter can restrict airflow and allow the evaporator to get too cold. Frigidaire describes this cause for the FFAD5033R10 on its model-specific troubleshooting page; its filter part number is not universal, so verify compatibility before buying any replacement.
- Review the humidity setting and display. Check the manual for your unit’s controls and displayed codes. Frigidaire specifically advises checking whether its unit is set to continuous operation (“CO”) and consulting the use-and-care manual for error codes.
- Let the unit defrost as directed. If the manual describes automatic defrost, allow it to operate through that cycle. Otherwise, use only the defrost procedure in the manual; do not chip or scrape ice from the coils.
Why does temperature guidance differ by model?
Dehumidifiers are not all designed for the same room temperatures. GE’s general guidance says its units ordinarily will not operate satisfactorily below 41°F, while Frigidaire’s general frost article also cites 41°F. A separate Frigidaire troubleshooting page says most standard models require the room to remain above 65°F. Haier describes frost below 60°F for its units. These figures come from distinct manufacturer pages and products; they do not establish a single threshold for all dehumidifiers.
GE also gives a recommended maximum ambient temperature of 90°F in its operating guidance. Check the manual for both ends of your unit’s specified range and for any low-temperature operating or defrost mode.

When should you arrange service?
Contact the manufacturer or a qualified service provider if heavy ice remains or returns after you have checked temperature, airflow, filter condition, settings and displayed codes. Frigidaire advises seeking service if its troubleshooting does not resolve the problem. The manufacturer guidance cited here does not establish a specific mechanical cause for an individual unit’s recurring ice, so do not infer a sealed-system or other component fault from frost alone.

If your space regularly falls below your current unit’s documented operating range and icing continues, compare models by their stated minimum operating temperature and how they detect and clear frost. Verify both points in the candidate model’s manual; a “low-temperature” label by itself does not establish that it suits your room.
