To save in the Nintendo Switch remake of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, press +, use L or R to open the System screen, select Save, and choose a save file. To continue later, load that file from the game’s load option.
Save your game
- While playing, press + to open the in-game menu.
- Press L or R until you reach the System screen.
- Select Save.
- Choose the file you want to use and confirm the save. The game has three save files, according to two game guides published around the game’s September 2019 launch.
This button sequence is described by two game-specific guides; Nintendo’s official support pages cover Switch save storage and cloud backups, not this game’s in-menu procedure.
Resume from a saved file
When you return to the game, use its load option and select the file you saved. The guides describe loading from the preceding menu, but do not establish every intermediate menu action or the game’s autosave behavior.
Using the Switch HOME button to suspend the software is not the same as deliberately saving a file. Nintendo’s general advice is to save games that require manual saving before closing the software; that guidance does not specifically describe Link’s Awakening.

Where the save is stored
Nintendo says Switch game save data is kept in the console’s System Memory, not on a microSD card. Archiving or deleting downloaded game software does not delete its save data, so you can download the game again and continue from the console’s saved data. See Nintendo’s save-data storage guidance.
Cloud backup and restore
Nintendo lists Save Data Cloud support for Link’s Awakening. Using the service requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Cloud backup is separate from the in-game Save command: it provides an online backup and restore option rather than changing how you make a save file. - Nintendo says automatic save-data backup is enabled by default when a Nintendo Switch Online membership starts. Automatic save-data download must be enabled on each console, and Nintendo notes that not all software supports automatic features. Details are in Nintendo’s backup guidance.
- Downloading a cloud backup replaces the existing console save for that game. Nintendo warns that overwritten data cannot be recovered, so check which save is newer before restoring.
- When moving to another console, check the relevant user, the game’s cloud-backup status, and the destination console’s settings instead of assuming the latest save has synced.
Game and update context
Nintendo’s official listing identifies the game as a single-player Nintendo Switch title released September 20, 2019, with physical and digital editions, amiibo support, and Save Data Cloud support. Nintendo’s update page lists version 1.1.0, released June 3, 2025, adding Switch 2 display optimization and HDR support; Nintendo says saved data remains available after the update.
