Solana’s Alpenglow is a planned consensus upgrade designed to replace TowerBFT with Votor, a voting and finality system intended to reduce consensus finality from about 12.8 seconds to a target of approximately 150 milliseconds. That speed is a goal, not a demonstrated result on an activated mainnet. The change is being rolled out in stages: BLS key registration and Validator Admission Ticket (VAT) gating are already active prerequisites, while the Votor consensus switch remains separate. Rotor, a planned replacement for block propagation, is a later phase.
What Alpenglow changes
Alpenglow is a core Solana protocol change described in SIMD-0326. Its first phase replaces TowerBFT consensus with Votor. It changes how validators agree on and finalize blocks; it does not change how applications execute transactions.
The proposal’s initial scope keeps Turbine as Solana’s data-dissemination system. Rotor is planned to replace Turbine later, in a separate, unscheduled release. So “Alpenglow” covers a staged migration, but Votor and Rotor are distinct changes.
How Votor reaches finality
In the existing approach, validators submit consensus votes as on-chain transactions. Votor instead sends votes directly between validators, then combines signatures into certificates that show whether a required stake threshold voted. This removes consensus votes from the ordinary on-chain transaction path.

SIMD-0326 describes two routes to finality:
- Fast path: A single round can finalize a block when a notarization certificate represents votes from 80% of stake.
- Slow path: Finalization takes two rounds and uses certificates with 60% stake thresholds.
A finalized block also determines earlier undecided slots in its ancestry; slots omitted from the chain are skipped. The design therefore couples a block’s direct finalization with the status of preceding slots.
What the speed and security figures mean
Solana’s upgrade pages contrast TowerBFT finality of roughly 12.8 seconds with Votor’s target of approximately 150 milliseconds. The 12.8-second figure is cited in the 2025 proposal, while 150 milliseconds is a target in Solana’s current upgrade overview—not a measured post-activation mainnet result. The figures describe consensus finality, not a promise that every transaction will be processed or confirmed in 150 milliseconds.

The proposal’s security model is a stated trade-off, not an assurance that the new design has the same properties as every two-round protocol. Solana summarizes the resilience goal as tolerating 20% malicious stake plus 20% offline stake. SIMD-0326 also acknowledges that Alpenglow does not provide the 33% Byzantine security associated with two-round voting protocols. Its authors argue that a one-round fast path and 40% crash-failure resilience justify that trade-off; that rationale is the proposal’s, rather than an independently established consensus among researchers.
Legacy consensus and Alpenglow compared
| Aspect | Current system | Alpenglow proposal |
|---|---|---|
| Consensus and finality | TowerBFT; about 12.8 seconds for consensus finality, according to the 2025 SIMD-0326 proposal. | Votor; approximately 150 milliseconds is Solana’s stated target, not an achieved mainnet result. |
| Vote transport | Validators submit votes as on-chain transactions. | Validators send votes directly to one another and aggregate signatures into certificates. |
| Finality thresholds | Not stated in the cited proposal comparison. | 80% stake for the one-round fast certificate; 60% thresholds for the two-round slow path. |
| Block dissemination | Turbine. | Turbine remains in the initial Votor phase; Rotor is planned as a later replacement. |
| Security claim | Not stated in the cited proposal comparison. | The proposal describes resilience to 20% malicious stake plus 20% offline stake and acknowledges it lacks the 33% Byzantine security associated with two-round voting protocols. |
Potential benefits and costs
SIMD-0326 aims to lower latency, bandwidth use, and consensus computation overhead, while improving resilience under adversarial network conditions and crash failures. These are design goals, not results established by a completed mainnet migration.

The proposal identifies implementation risk and the difficulty of a large protocol change as major drawbacks. It calls the change incompatible with the old consensus protocol, so validators must prepare for a protocol migration rather than treat Alpenglow as a routine setting change.
Rollout status: prerequisites are live, consensus is separate
According to the Solana Foundation’s July 2026 BLS Pubkey and the Validator Admission Ticket update, BLS public-key registration activated on mainnet on July 8, 2026, and VAT activated on July 22, 2026. Validators without registered BLS keys stop participating in consensus. VAT gates validator admission, but its activation does not switch on Alpenglow.

The consensus switch is a separate step associated with Agave 4.3. Solana’s pages do not agree on its expected quarter: the VAT update gives Q4 2026, while the Alpenglow overview lists Q3 2026 for Votor. Treat the schedule as a moving target; the concrete distinction is that BLS/VAT prerequisites are active while the Votor activation is separate. Rotor is planned for a later release with no scheduled date stated in the cited rollout information.
The VAT update also states a maximum admission of 2,000 validators and a fee of 1.6 SOL per epoch after full Alpenglow migration. Before the consensus switch, voting validators continue to pay on-chain vote transaction costs. These are rollout and admission details, not evidence that Alpenglow consensus is already running.

What users, developers, and validators need to do
Ordinary Solana users
No user migration is required. Signing, sending, and approving transactions are expected to remain the same.
Application developers
Applications that only send transactions and read account state are not expected to need changes. Developers consuming streams should account for more than one candidate bank per slot and the new bank_id field.
Validators
BLS key registration is already a participation prerequisite, and Solana’s current guidance calls for Agave 4.3 before joining Alpenglow consensus. Validators should distinguish that preparation from activation: having a registered key or using VAT does not itself mean the node has switched to Votor.
For rollout details and the latest activation guidance, consult Solana’s Alpenglow upgrade guide.
