If you mean Sony’s newest current console, you’re choosing between the standard PS5 and the more powerful PS5 Pro—not a confirmed next-generation PlayStation. For most buyers, the standard disc-drive PS5 is the better value; choose PS5 Pro if you play supported games on a suitable display and consider its graphics and performance enhancements worth the higher price. Sony has not decided when a next-generation platform will arrive or what it will cost.
Which PlayStation consoles are current?
Sony’s current lineup includes the standard PS5, PS5 Digital Edition and PS5 Pro. The Pro is a premium model in the PS5 family, not an announced next-generation console. Sony’s corporate strategy Q&A says decisions about next-generation platform timing and price have not been made. That means there is no confirmed successor release date or price to weigh against a purchase today. Sony corporate strategy Q&A and the official U.S. PlayStation console page identify the current choices.

How much do PS5 and PS5 Pro cost?
Sony’s recommended U.S. retail prices, effective April 2, 2026, are shown below. These are U.S. recommended prices, not a guarantee of current retailer prices or prices in other countries. Sony lists separate prices for the U.K., Europe and Japan; buyers elsewhere should check local retailers or PlayStation Direct where available. Sony’s price update gives the regional details.
| Console | U.S. recommended price | What that price means |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 Digital Edition | $599.99 | Lowest official U.S. entry price; no included optical disc drive. |
| Standard PS5 with disc drive | $649.99 | Includes disc playback. |
| PS5 Pro | $899.99 | $250 more than the standard disc-drive PS5 and $300 more than Digital Edition; sold without a disc drive. |
What does PS5 Pro improve?
Sony positions PS5 Pro around an upgraded GPU, advanced ray tracing and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), an AI-driven image-upscaling technology. The console has a 2 TB SSD. Sony’s product information describes these as capabilities and features; it does not promise that every game uses them or receives the same benefit. Sony’s PS5 Pro announcement and the U.S. PS5 Pro product listing provide the specifications and included accessories.
#1 Best Overall
- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
In its 2024 launch announcement, Sony Interactive Entertainment said PS5 Pro has 67% more GPU compute units and 28% faster memory than the then-current PS5, and that gameplay rendering can be up to 45% faster. These are Sony’s launch-era platform claims, not independent measurements; they do not establish an equivalent gain in every title. Sony says Pro-enhanced features are available only in select PS5 games and vary by game.
Which model fits your needs?
| Your priority | Better starting choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Keeping the cost down while playing physical PS5 game discs | Standard disc-drive PS5 | At Sony’s U.S. recommended prices, it costs $250 less than Pro and includes a disc drive. |
| Paying less and buying games digitally | PS5 Digital Edition | It is $50 below the disc-drive PS5 at the stated U.S. prices, but has no included optical drive. |
| Prioritizing Sony’s highest-spec PS5 graphics and performance option | PS5 Pro | It offers Sony’s GPU, ray-tracing and PSSR enhancements, plus 2 TB storage. Benefits depend on the game, and the console costs more. |
| Using game discs or other disc media | Standard disc-drive PS5, or Pro with a separate drive | Pro is sold without a disc drive. Add the cost of the compatible optional drive if you want disc playback. |
| Waiting specifically for the next PlayStation generation | Decide based on current needs and budget | Sony has not decided next-generation platform timing or price, so no release window is confirmed. |
Is PS5 Pro worth the extra money?
It is most compelling if the games you actually play support Pro enhancements, you care about image quality or smoother performance, and you are comfortable paying the premium. The extra storage may also matter if you keep many games installed. But Sony’s platform claims do not mean every game will run at 4K and 60 frames per second, or that every player will see a large improvement. The relevant question is whether the improvements available in your games justify the difference in your local total cost.
Rank #2
- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
For a more balanced comparison, check whether your display and the games you play can make use of the improvements you value. If you mainly want access to PS5 games, prefer physical discs, or would rather spend the price difference elsewhere, the standard PS5 is the more straightforward choice. These recommendations reflect Sony’s stated features and prices, not hands-on testing or independent game benchmarks.
Quick Recap
What to check before buying
- Compare current prices from sellers in your country; Sony’s listed U.S. recommended prices may not match live retail offers.
- Decide whether you need disc playback. The Digital Edition and PS5 Pro are sold without a built-in disc drive.
- If considering Pro, look for enhancement support in the specific games you play rather than assuming every PS5 title benefits equally.
- Compare the complete setup cost. PS5 Pro’s disc drive is separate, and Sony’s U.S. product page says its vertical stand is sold separately.
- Do not treat a rumored next-generation release date or price as confirmed; Sony says those decisions have not been made.
