To stop every alert from one app, turn off its notifications; to silence or assign a sound to only certain alerts, use that app’s notification categories. On Galaxy phones, category controls may need to be enabled first, and the available options depend on the app and your One UI version.
Turn off every notification from one app
This blocks notifications from the selected app, rather than just silencing one kind of alert.
- Open Settings > Notifications > App notifications.
- Select the app.
- Turn off Allow notifications.
Another Samsung-documented route is Settings > Apps > [app] > Notifications. Menu labels and routes can vary by Galaxy model and software version. See Samsung’s guide to controlling app notifications on a Galaxy phone or tablet.
Silence only selected notification types
Notification categories let you target particular kinds of alerts without turning off the app’s other notifications. If you do not see categories for an app, first check whether the category control is enabled:

- Open Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings.
- Turn on Manage notification categories for each app.
- Return to Settings > Notifications > App notifications and select the app.
- Open Notification categories, then turn off the category you want to silence.
Category names and availability are set by the app. Samsung notes that some apps do not have a Notification categories section, so this control is not available for every app. See Samsung’s notification instructions.
Assign a different sound to an app category
When an app exposes category sound controls, you can choose a tone for that type of notification. Open Settings > Notifications > App notifications > [app] > Notification categories, then select the category. Confirm Allow notifications is on and Alert is selected; tap Sound and choose a tone. If Sound is missing, the app may not support a custom sound for that category, or the category may not be set to alert. Some apps instead provide sound options in their own settings. Samsung’s category-sound guidance explains the system path; its app notification guide notes that settings differ by app.
Use your own audio file as a notification sound
Samsung India’s instructions say to place the audio file in the phone’s Notifications folder, then choose it from the sound choices for a supported app category. The folder method and available choices can vary by device and software version. Follow Samsung India’s custom notification sound guide.

The general Settings > Sounds and vibration > Notification sound setting changes the default notification tone. For a distinct sound for one app or notification type, use its category settings when the app supports them. See Samsung’s category sound instructions.
Choose a temporary quiet mode instead
For a short break from audible alerts, Mute silences them broadly. Do not disturb can block sounds and notifications while it is active, and can be configured with exceptions for people, apps, and alarms, as well as schedules. These controls are broader than changing one app’s categories. Samsung describes them in its sound and notification guidance.

What changes in One UI 8
Samsung’s Canada guide for One UI 8 describes redesigned notification settings, including per-app controls for pop-ups and lock-screen content. That guide does not establish that the same layout is available on every Galaxy model.
