If your iPhone shows “SOS,” “No Service,” “Searching,” “Invalid SIM,” or “No SIM Card installed,” the message alone cannot tell you what has failed. Apple says “No Service” or “Searching” means the iPhone is not connected to a cellular network—not that the phone, SIM, or carrier is necessarily at fault. Work through the checks below to see whether the problem follows the SIM, stays with the iPhone, or points to the carrier.

Start by recording what is—and is not—working

Note the exact alert and whether the issue affects calls, texts, cellular data, or only one line. Record where it happens and whether another phone on the same carrier has service there. Trouble affecting nearby subscribers too is consistent with a coverage problem or outage, but ask the carrier to confirm it rather than treating it as proof.

Apple’s guidance distinguishes the symptoms “SOS,” “No Service,” and “Searching” from SIM alerts such as “Invalid SIM” and “No SIM Card installed.” None of these labels, by itself, identifies the failed component. See Apple’s guidance for SOS, No Service, or Searching and its instructions for Invalid SIM or No SIM alerts.

Try reconnection and software checks first

  1. Turn Airplane Mode on, wait at least 15 seconds, then turn it off.

These steps can address a temporary connection or configuration problem, but they do not establish whether the account is active, whether there is an outage, or whether the hardware is working. On iOS 18 or later, Apple says its Support app can run additional diagnostics that may help determine the source of a cellular issue; the available diagnostics may vary.

Check the active line and SIM type

For Dual SIM

Open Settings > Cellular (called Mobile Service or Mobile Data in some regions), tap the affected line, and confirm that it is turned on. Check which line is selected for cellular data. If the line is missing, or an eSIM will not activate, contact the carrier rather than attempting to reseat a physical SIM. Apple’s Dual SIM with eSIM troubleshooting covers line and plan issues.

iSYFIX SIM Card Tray Eject Pin Removal Tool, 10 Pack
  • What you get: 10 identical steel SIM ejector needles, one standard size that fits the eject hole of any phone or tablet with a physical SIM slot, so a spare is always within reach
  • Right for your device: Android and Samsung Galaxy phones, cellular iPads and tablets, and any iPhone that still uses a physical SIM, one needle works for all of them
  • How to use: push the needle straight into the small hole next to the SIM drawer until it pops open, then lift out the drawer, no force, twisting or technical skill needed
  • The difference vs paperclips: a rigid one piece steel needle holds its shape where bent wire flexes, so it presses the release cleanly without scratching or jamming the port
  • Ten spares, zero hunting: keep one at home, at the office, in the car, in your wallet and in every travel bag, and hand extras to family or coworkers who always lose theirs

For a physical SIM

First confirm the plan is active and the iPhone is not carrier-locked in a way that prevents use of that SIM. Then remove and reseat the card, making sure the tray closes fully and is the correct tray for the iPhone. Look for visible SIM damage. If the alert remains, try another SIM or ask the carrier to test or replace the card.

A SIM eject tool is needed only to open a tray on an iPhone model that has one. SIM and eSIM availability varies by iPhone model and region; an eSIM-only iPhone has no physical card to reseat. Apple’s iPhone cellular setup guide explains the model-dependent options.

  • 👍 These are great for removing the Sim Card from your iPhone or iPad. They also work with any other device that uses this type of latch system.
  • 👍 Comes in a zip-bag for easy storage.
  • 👍 Specifically sized for the iPhone, Samsung . May works with other smartphones with similar size eject tray.

For an eSIM

Confirm that the line appears in Cellular settings and is switched on. eSIM setup may require an internet connection, a carrier-supported plan and device, and current carrier settings. If activation still fails, ask the carrier to verify the eSIM activation and plan eligibility; Apple’s eSIM setup troubleshooting directs users to the provider when setup cannot be completed.

Cross-test the SIM and iPhone, if possible

A cross-test can show where to investigate next, but it is an elimination method—not a definitive diagnosis. Before swapping cards or phones, check carrier lock status and compatibility.

  • A known-working, compatible SIM works in the iPhone: the original SIM or its provisioning becomes a more likely cause.
  • Several known-working, compatible SIMs work elsewhere but fail in this iPhone: suspicion shifts toward the iPhone, its settings, or compatibility. This result alone does not prove a hardware fault.

Ask the carrier to rule out account and network causes

Contact the carrier using another phone or Wi-Fi if necessary. Ask it to check each of these items:

  • The account is active and in good standing.
  • The plan supports the calls, texts, or data service you are trying to use.
  • Your location has coverage and no local outage is affecting service.
  • The iPhone is not barred or blocked on the network.
  • The physical SIM or eSIM is correctly provisioned and, for an eSIM, activation is complete.
  • If the iPhone was purchased outside the country or region where it is being used, whether local IMEI registration is required.

The carrier is the party that can inspect and manage account details, plan status, provisioning, and network restrictions. Apple’s cellular connection guidance also recommends confirming account, coverage, outage, and device status with the carrier.

Use the results to choose the next step

Check What it helps isolate What it cannot establish
Airplane Mode, restart, iOS, and carrier settings Temporary connection or configuration issues Account status, a local outage, or a hardware fault
Reseat or test a physical SIM Seating, visible card damage, or a card-specific problem Carrier lock or provisioning; this test does not apply to eSIM-only models
Carrier account and network checks Plan, provisioning, coverage, outage, and device-block causes Whether the iPhone has a hardware fault
Cross-test a known-good compatible SIM or phone Whether the symptoms appear to follow the SIM or stay with the iPhone A definitive diagnosis; compatibility and lock status can affect the result
Apple or authorized service assessment A possible iPhone hardware problem after carrier causes are ruled out Carrier-side issues that have not been checked

When to seek iPhone service

If the carrier confirms that the account, plan, SIM or eSIM provisioning, coverage, outage status, and device-block status are all clear, but cellular service still fails, contact Apple or an authorized service provider for diagnosis. Apple says the iPhone may need service when the carrier has ruled out account and network problems and hardware is suspected. A single “No Service” alert or failed SIM test is not enough to conclude that the antenna, modem, or another component has failed.
