Build the wheel, install that exact file into a clean virtual environment, and run pytest without letting the repository source take precedence on Python’s import path. Installing a wheel is not enough on its own: pytest can still import code from the checkout, so verify where the package was loaded from.
Build and install the wheel in a clean environment
Use the Python Packaging User Guide’s recommended build workflow rather than invoking the deprecated setup.py command-line interface.
- Build the wheel from the project root: run
python -m build --wheel. The resulting wheel is written todist/; its exact filename depends on the project and its compatibility tags. - Create a temporary virtual environment with the Python version and platform you want to validate, then activate it. Install the test dependencies into this environment so the test command uses the same interpreter and environment as the wheel.
- Install the built artifact: run
python -m pip install dist/your-project-version-...whl, replacing the example with the exact wheel filename. Pip supports installing directly from a wheel archive; see its installation documentation. - Run the project’s pytest command from a location and with configuration that do not make the checkout’s package importable ahead of the installed copy. Verify the import location as described below.
Do not use pip install -e . for this check. An editable install is meant to reflect changes made in the source tree, rather than exercise the ordinary installation path of the built wheel.
Keep pytest from importing the checkout
Pytest’s import behavior can expose repository code even when the wheel is installed. Its default prepend mode puts directories containing test modules at the start of sys.path. Depending on the layout, the repository root or another source directory may therefore take precedence over the installed package. See pytest’s good integration practices and Python path and import modes.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The invocation location matters, too: python -m pytest adds the current directory to sys.path. Running it from the project root can make a flat-layout package importable from the checkout. Neither installing a wheel first nor choosing python -m pytest proves by itself that pytest tested the installed copy.
Use layout and import settings deliberately
A src/ layout separates importable package code from the repository root, reducing the chance that the root alone exposes the package. Pytest offers prepend, append, and importlib import modes. In the documented case where the test package shares an import root with the local package, append can allow resolution to the installed package; importlib imports test modules without changing sys.path. These settings affect test-module imports and are not universal guarantees. Use them alongside a clean environment and a layout that does not expose source code.

For this wheel check, avoid adding the package source directory through PYTHONPATH or pytest’s pythonpath setting. If the project’s tests require running from the repository, inspect the resulting import path rather than assuming the installed package won.
Confirm which package the tests import
As a diagnostic, print the package’s __file__ or __spec__.origin from the test environment. The path should point into that environment’s installation location, not into the checkout. The pytest documentation explains how import behavior and the current directory can affect sys.path; checking the origin is a practical way to detect that issue, not a prescribed pytest assertion.

If the origin points into the repository, the wheel test is not isolated from source code. Revisit the working directory, test layout, pytest import mode and path configuration before treating the run as a check of the installed artifact.
Use tox when it fits the project
Pytest documents tox as an option for testing the installed package: it creates test environments and can reveal packaging glitches. Configure the tox environment to install the wheel artifact under test, then run the project’s test command there. Check that the configuration does not instead install the working tree as an editable package. See pytest’s tox guidance.

What an installed-wheel test catches
A wheel is a built distribution intended to be installed. Testing the installed artifact can reveal missing files or packaging configuration problems that source-tree or editable tests may not expose. The Packaging User Guide distinguishes installing a wheel from installing a source distribution, which requires a build step.
Install the wheel before testing rather than running software directly from the archive. The wheel specification cautions that running directly from a wheel can bypass expected installation behavior; some packages also rely on ordinary filesystem paths or installed extensions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBest Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Keep source or editable tests for fast development iteration, and use the installed-wheel workflow to check the distribution users will install. For compiled extensions or other platform-specific artifacts, choose a wheel compatible with the Python environment and platform used for the test.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes to avoid
- Installing editable instead of installing the artifact:
pip install -e .does not validate the regular wheel installation path. - Running from the checkout without checking imports: the current directory and pytest’s import behavior can make local code win over the installed copy.
- Assuming one pytest flag fixes every layout: import mode, test structure and path configuration interact; verify the package origin.
- Building with
python setup.py bdist_wheel: the Packaging User Guide marks thesetup.pycommand-line interface as deprecated and recommendspython -m build. Thesetup.pyfile itself remains a valid Setuptools configuration file; it is using it as a command-line tool that is deprecated.
