WhatsApp says personal messages are end-to-end encrypted by default, and Chat Lock adds a separate layer of protection on your device. Chat Lock hides selected conversations behind authentication; it does not create the encryption that protects message content between participants.
What end-to-end encryption and Chat Lock each protect
End-to-end encryption protects personal messages and calls exchanged between participants. WhatsApp’s 2016 announcement described messages, photos, videos, files, voice messages, and calls as encrypted by default for people using the latest version of the app. WhatsApp says only the intended participants hold the keys needed to read message content. WhatsApp’s encryption announcement
Chat Lock works at a different layer: it moves a selected conversation into a folder that requires device authentication or, where configured, a secret code. It also hides identifying details in notifications. WhatsApp describes the feature as an extra layer of authentication, not a separate message-encryption protocol. WhatsApp Help Center: Chat Lock
| Feature | What it protects | What it does not mean |
|---|---|---|
| End-to-end encryption | Personal message and call content exchanged by participants. | It does not automatically give every copy, backup, notification, or unlocked screen the same protection. |
| Chat Lock | Access to selected conversations on the device, plus details shown in notifications. | It does not add encryption to message content or automatically encrypt a cloud backup. |
| End-to-end encrypted backup | A saved chat-history backup, if you enable the separate backup setting and secure it with an available credential. | It is not automatically enabled when you lock a conversation. |
What Chat Lock changes in practice
- Locked conversations are placed in a hidden folder behind an extra authentication step. Supported methods depend on your device and configuration and can include a device passcode, biometric authentication, or a secret code.
- Notifications for locked chats hide the message content and contact information; they may show “WhatsApp” or “WhatsApp: 1 new message” instead of the contact name.
- You can lock individual chats, including groups and muted chats. Calls from contacts in locked chats are not blocked.
- On WhatsApp Web, opening locked chats requires a secret code created on your Android or iPhone device.
WhatsApp introduced the feature to help protect a conversation if someone else might have access to your phone, and described it as “one more layer of security.” That additional layer matters when the device is accessible to another person, but it is not a guarantee of privacy if they can use an already-unlocked device or account. Can WhatsApp read a locked chat?
Chat Lock itself does not determine who can decrypt message content. WhatsApp says personal messages and calls are end-to-end encrypted, so the lock should be understood as a way to restrict local access to a conversation and conceal notification details—not as an extra barrier that changes who holds the encryption keys.

No—not by Chat Lock alone. WhatsApp says Google Account chat backups are not protected by WhatsApp end-to-end encryption unless you separately enable the end-to-end encrypted backup option. WhatsApp Help Center: About end-to-end encrypted backup
