Choose a PlayStation 5 by matching its game-specific performance features, storage, disc support, and your display to how you actually play. Sony’s current US lineup lists a 1TB disc PS5, an 825GB PS5 Digital Edition, and a 2TB PS5 Pro; the Pro’s visual and frame-rate benefits depend on game support, while the digital models need a separately sold drive for physical discs.

Compare the current PS5 models at a glance

Sony’s US buying page lists three configurations. The standard disc and Digital Edition slim models share the same core CPU and GPU specifications in the CFI-21XX manual; their listed storage and disc arrangements differ. PS5 Pro adds game-dependent graphics and performance features.

Model Performance Listed built-in storage Disc support
PS5 disc console (CFI-21XX slim family) Standard PS5 performance; CFI-21XX manual lists a 10 TFLOPS GPU and 16GB GDDR6 memory 1TB Built-in Blu-ray disc drive
PS5 Digital Edition (CFI-21XX slim family) Same listed core CPU/GPU and memory as the disc console in the CFI-21XX manual 825GB No built-in drive; compatible removable drive supported on specified slim model groups
PS5 Pro PSSR, advanced ray tracing, and higher or more consistent frame-rate options in supported or enhanced games 2TB All-digital as sold; compatible removable drive sold separately

These capacities are Sony’s listed figures, not the amount of free space available for games: part of the drive is reserved for system administration and other functions. The CFI-21XX manual specifications apply to that model family, not necessarily every earlier PS5 revision. See Sony’s PS5 buying page and the CFI-21XX manual.

Will PS5 Pro improve the games you play?

PS5 Pro is the more relevant choice if you care about image quality, ray tracing, or frame rate in games with Pro enhancements. Sony describes its PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) as AI-enhanced resolution technology, alongside advanced ray tracing and performance options. The results are not uniform: enhancements and available modes vary by game. Sony’s US feature page lists over 100 enhanced PS5 titles as of its 2026 page presentation, but that is a page-current figure, not a promise that every game receives an upgrade.

Check your own games, not just the console label

Before choosing Pro, look up enhancement details for the games you play most. A supported title may offer a choice between sharper graphics and higher frame rates, or combine features that were separated into different modes on standard PS5. For example, Insomniac Games’ Mike Fitzgerald says Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart has a Performance Pro mode combining the crisp 4K resolution and ray tracing features of Fidelity mode with 60 frames per second, as well as a Fidelity Pro mode with additional ray-tracing-based rendering features. This is an example for that game, not a general guarantee for other titles.

Sony says compatible PS5 Pro games can reach 60fps or up to 120fps with 4K output and ray tracing. Those are conditional capabilities: the game must support the relevant features, and a compatible display is needed to take advantage of its output. Sony also lists over 8,500 playable PS4 games on PS5 Pro; that figure describes playable titles, not Pro enhancements. See Sony’s PS5 Pro features and game information.

How much storage do you need?

The US-listed capacities are 825GB for the Digital Edition, 1TB for the disc PS5, and 2TB for PS5 Pro. The larger Pro drive can reduce how often you need to uninstall games, but actual usable free space is lower than the headline capacity. Think about how many large games you keep installed at once, rather than treating the listed number as installable capacity.

Expand storage with a compatible M.2 SSD

Sony supports compatible M.2 SSD expansion. PS5 and PS4 games and media apps can run directly from an installed expansion SSD, subject to Sony’s size and performance requirements. Check the current requirements and update the console system software before installation; not every M.2 drive qualifies.

Use external USB storage for a different purpose

External USB storage can hold compatible PS5 and PS4 games. PS4 games can be played from the USB drive, but a PS5 game stored there must be transferred back to console storage before it can be played. If you want to keep many PS5 games ready to launch, internal M.2 expansion is more convenient. Sony’s PS5 storage expansion guidance explains the requirements and distinctions.

Do you need a disc drive?

The standard disc PS5 is the straightforward option if you use physical games or Blu-ray discs. The Digital Edition has no drive, and PS5 Pro is sold as an all-digital console. A compatible removable drive can add disc playback to certain digital models, but compatibility depends on the console’s model group.

  • Enjoy smooth and fluid high frame rate gameplay at up to 120 fps for compatible games, with support for 120Hz output on 4K displays.
  • PS5 consoles support an 8K output, so you can play games on your 4320p resolution display.

  • 825GB SSD allows ultra-fast load times, while 3-D audio output produces crisp acoustics.
  • Explore uncharted virtual territories and slay dragons with this sleek Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console.

Sony says its removable drive is intended for PS5 Pro and CFI-2000/2100 slim Digital Edition groups. It supports 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD, and requires an internet connection to pair during setup. Check the console’s model number before buying the drive; do not assume that a drive intended for these groups fits every digital PS5. Details appear on Sony’s buying page and PlayStation Direct’s removable drive listing.

Will your TV, monitor, and network support the features?

  • 1440p: PS5 supports 1440p output on compatible monitors and TVs.
  • VRR: Requires an HDMI 2.1 VRR-compatible display.
  • ALLM: Also depends on a compatible TV.
  • 120Hz: Useful only when both the display and the particular game support the relevant mode. Sony describes 60Hz and 120Hz display support for compatible PS5 Pro games.
  • Wi-Fi 7 on PS5 Pro: A compatible router and local network conditions affect wireless performance; the feature alone does not guarantee faster or more reliable connections.

Check the specifications of your existing TV or monitor and router before paying extra for features you cannot use. Sony’s PS5 display and feature support page describes the relevant compatibility conditions.

A practical way to make the choice

  1. List your main games. Check whether the titles you care about have PS5 Pro enhancements and what those modes actually offer.
  2. Match the console to your screen. Confirm support for the resolution, refresh rate, VRR, or other features you want to use.
  3. Estimate your installed library. Compare your habits with the listed 825GB, 1TB, or 2TB capacity, remembering that usable free space is lower. Consider compatible M.2 expansion if you keep many PS5 games installed.
  4. Decide whether you need physical media. Choose the disc model for a built-in drive, or verify removable-drive compatibility by model group if considering a digital console.
  5. Check the exact regional listing and model. Sony’s specifications and accessory compatibility can vary by model group and region. Compare current local prices and stock before buying; no single live price comparison is established here.
