A startup app is a reasonable candidate to disable only when you can identify what it does, know you do not rely on its background features, and can turn it back on if something breaks. A Windows “High impact” label measures startup resource use—not whether an app is safe, essential, or malicious. If you cannot identify an entry, leave it enabled until the software publisher or your device administrator explains it.
What “safe to disable” means
Disabling a startup entry prevents an app from launching automatically when you sign in or start the computer. It does not uninstall the app. Whether that change is harmless depends on what the app does and which features you use.
A background app may handle file syncing, notifications, backups, or support for a connected device. If you rely on one of those functions, keep the app enabled or look in the app’s own settings for a less disruptive startup option. There is no universal list of startup apps that is safe to disable: the same app can be unnecessary for one person and important to another.
Identify the app and what you would lose
- Check its name and publisher. Read the information shown in your operating system’s startup list. An unfamiliar name, missing publisher, or high-impact rating alone does not prove that an app is malware.
- Verify its purpose. Search the developer’s official website or documentation for the app and its background features. If the entry remains unclear, ask the developer or your device administrator before changing it.
- Consider the features you use. Check whether the app provides syncing, notifications, backup, peripheral features, or another convenience you depend on. For a work-managed computer, check with the administrator before changing a startup setting.
- Choose a reversible test. If the app is identifiable and you do not need its background functions, disable only that entry using the normal startup controls, then restart and check the features you care about.
- Undo the change if needed. If an expected feature stops working, re-enable the app through the same startup list.
How to disable a startup app in Windows
Use Settings
Open Settings > Apps > Startup, find the app, and switch it off. Windows’ instructions also let you choose Disable for a listed app to prevent it from starting automatically: Microsoft’s Windows startup-app instructions.

Use Task Manager
Open Task Manager, select Startup apps, choose the app, and select Disable. Task Manager also displays startup impact for some entries. Microsoft bases this measurement on CPU time and disk I/O during startup; it is a performance indicator, not a safety or necessity rating.
| Windows startup impact | Microsoft’s stated measurement |
|---|---|
| High | More than 1 second of CPU time or more than 3 MB of startup disk I/O |
| Medium | 300–1,000 milliseconds of CPU time or 300 KB–3 MB of disk I/O |
| Low | Under 300 milliseconds of CPU time and under 300 KB of disk I/O |
These thresholds describe the app’s measured startup resource use, not whether it is trustworthy or needed. A high-impact app may provide a feature you want; a low-impact app may still be unnecessary. Microsoft’s thresholds are listed in its startup and shutdown experience guidance.

How to test login items on a Mac
In macOS, open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions. Review the items that open at login and the apps permitted to run in the background. Remove only an item you have identified and do not depend on, then restart and check the relevant features. Apple’s login-items guidance provides the controls and troubleshooting steps.
For troubleshooting, Apple recommends recording the login-item list, removing items to test, restarting, and adding them back one at a time if the test resolves the problem. Apple also cautions that disabling a StartupItems item installed by an app may affect that app’s performance: Apple’s guidance on startup items.

When not to disable it—or when to get help
- You cannot identify the entry: Leave it enabled until the developer or device administrator can explain its purpose.
- You rely on its background function: Keep it enabled, or check the app’s own settings for another way to manage startup behavior.
- The computer is managed for work or school: Ask the administrator before changing an entry that may support a required service or policy.
- The app seems unwanted or behaves suspiciously: A startup toggle is not a malware scan. Follow trusted-source security guidance and run an updated Microsoft Defender scan when appropriate. Microsoft’s advice on potentially unwanted applications explains protections for Windows.
Avoid broad service and boot changes for routine cleanup
Disabling an app in the normal startup list is different from changing Windows services or advanced boot settings. A clean boot is a troubleshooting procedure, not a general way to tidy startup apps; it can temporarily remove functionality. Microsoft warns, “Using the System Configuration utility might make the computer unusable,” and says to use that utility for these changes only with guidance from a Microsoft support engineer. See Microsoft’s clean-boot instructions.

Startup lists answer whether an app launches automatically; they do not certify that the app is safe. Microsoft notes that Windows desktop apps do not use Windows privacy permission prompts and do not appear on the privacy pages that manage app access. If your concern is malware or unwanted software, assess the app through trusted security guidance rather than treating its startup status as proof either way.
