What makes Quest 3 different for PC VR?
It works as a standalone headset, too
Quest 3 does not need a gaming PC for its standalone use. If you also want PC VR, Meta supports Quest Link over a cable or Air Link over Wi-Fi. That gives you a choice between using the headset on its own and connecting it to a Windows PC for PC VR. Meta lists these options in its device comparison.
There are two distinct ways to stream PC VR wirelessly
Air Link is Meta’s wireless PC VR connection. Steam Link is a separate app-based route for streaming a Steam library to supported Quest headsets. Steam’s support FAQ identifies Quest 3 compatibility and, for its listed setup, calls for a PC running Steam and SteamVR and a Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E router. Check the live Steam Link support FAQ for current setup details.

Wireless compatibility does not promise a particular image quality or latency. Results depend on the PC, network conditions, router placement, settings, and individual sensitivity. The published compatibility information does not establish a controlled performance comparison with Index.
Wired Quest Link is an option
Quest 3 can connect to a PC using cable-based Meta Quest Link. Cable choice and compatibility matter; the cited sources do not establish that every USB-C cable is equivalent. Meta also reported in a March 6, 2024 Link update that Link power consumption was reduced by approximately 30%, and said the change should extend Air Link sessions from 90 minutes to about 140 minutes. Those are dated vendor claims, not guaranteed session times for every headset, PC, game, or configuration. Meta’s update also says Link supports a 120 Hz refresh rate for PC VR titles on Quest 3: Meta Quest Link improvements.

What does Valve Index require?
A compatible PC and SteamVR tracking hardware
Index is a PC-dependent SteamVR headset. Valve says it requires a PC, compatible controllers, and compatible base stations. The complete kit listing includes two controllers and two SteamVR 2.0 base stations; make sure you distinguish that kit from a headset-only or other package when checking what is included.
Valve’s published minimum PC requirements include Windows 10 or SteamOS/Linux, a dual-core CPU with Hyper-Threading, 8 GB of RAM, an NVIDIA GTX 970 or AMD RX480-class graphics card, DisplayPort 1.2, and a USB port. The page lists a GTX 1070 or better as recommended on Windows. Verify the current requirements on Valve’s Index headset page before buying.

SteamVR compatibility is broader than Index
Valve’s official overview states, “Any VR title you purchase on Steam is playable on all SteamVR compatible VR headsets.” That means a Steam library is not, by itself, a reason to choose Index over Quest 3; Quest can access Steam VR through supported PC streaming routes. The connection method and resulting experience differ. Valve’s statement appears on its Index overview.
How do the display specifications compare?
Meta lists Quest 3 at 2064 × 2208 pixels per eye, up to 120 Hz, and a 110° horizontal / 96° vertical field of view. Meta estimates battery life at about two hours; that is a vendor estimate, not an independent test. These Quest figures are from Meta’s comparison page, marked updated September 30, 2026: Meta device comparison.

The accessed official Valve product page describes Index’s custom display and optics but does not supply directly comparable numeric figures for resolution, refresh rate, field of view, or battery life. It would be misleading to fill those gaps with unsourced figures or to declare one headset sharper, more comfortable, or lower-latency based on the available published information. No controlled head-to-head testing of those experiences is established here.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What will each headset cost?
Price depends on the package, what tracking hardware you already own, your region, and current stock. At the time of the store observation recorded for this comparison, Valve’s US store showed a $999 Index VR Kit out of stock, a $749 headset-and-controllers package out of stock, and a $499 headset listed for purchase. These are volatile storefront observations, not durable prices or a guarantee of current availability. Check the Valve Steam Store for the live listing. A current official Quest 3 price was not established in the cited sources, so compare current local prices rather than assuming a figure.

Which headset should you choose?
Choose Meta Quest 3 if you want flexibility
- You want to play VR without a PC and also have the option of PC VR.
- You prefer to choose between wired Link and wireless Air Link or Steam Link when connecting to a PC.
- You do not want a setup that depends on separate SteamVR base stations and controllers.
Choose Valve Index if you are building around tethered SteamVR
- You already have compatible tracking hardware, or you are willing to accommodate the required controllers and base stations.
- You have a PC that meets Valve’s current requirements and are comfortable with a tethered setup.
- You have checked the exact package, local price, and availability and the Index fits your setup.
For most buyers seeking both standalone and PC VR, Quest 3 is the more versatile choice. Index can be a sensible fit for a buyer already invested in compatible SteamVR hardware and committed to a tethered PC system; neither is a universal winner on visual quality, comfort, tracking, or latency based on the available official specifications alone.
