To reset an iPhone’s network settings, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. It removes saved network configuration, so you’ll need to reconnect to Wi‑Fi and may need to check mobile, VPN, or APN settings. It does not erase photos, messages, apps, or other iPhone content.

How to reset network settings on an iPhone

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap Transfer or Reset iPhone.
  4. Tap Reset.
  5. Tap Reset Network Settings and confirm if prompted.

This is the sequence in Apple’s current iPhone guide: Reset iPhone settings to their defaults. Menu wording can vary by iOS version; if your screen differs, check the reset choices under General and select the network-specific option.

What resetting network settings changes

Apple describes this action as removing network settings. Expect to reconnect to Wi‑Fi networks you used before and re-enter their passwords. Wi‑Fi switches off and back on during the process, disconnecting the iPhone from its current network; the Wi‑Fi and Ask to Join Networks settings remain on.

The reset can also affect mobile, VPN, and APN settings. Apple says previously used networks and VPN settings that were not installed through a configuration profile or mobile device management (MDM) are removed. Manually trusted certificates become untrusted, the iPhone’s assigned device name returns to “iPhone,” and cellular data roaming may be turned off. Review any manually configured cellular or VPN details afterward.

What it does—and does not—erase

Despite the word “reset,” this option does not erase photos, messages, apps, or other iPhone content. It is different from Erase All Content and Settings, which removes content. Check the exact option name before confirming; do not choose the erase option if your goal is only to reset network settings.

Work, school, and managed VPN settings

VPN settings installed through a configuration profile or MDM are not removed by the network reset. Removing a profile or management is a separate action and can also remove other settings, accounts, or certificates. If your school or employer configured the network, consult its IT or network administrator before resetting.

What to try before resetting

Apple recommends trying other Wi‑Fi fixes first because the reset removes saved network configuration. Start with the checks below, then reset only if the connection problem remains.
