If you want PC VR without a Meta Quest, the best-documented options here are Bigscreen Beyond 2 and Pimax Crystal Light. Beyond 2 is the more clearly specified lightweight, SteamVR-native choice, but it requires at least one base station. Crystal Light is listed as SteamVR compatible and has published PC requirements; Pimax says Lighthouse 2.0 is not supported on that model. Neither manufacturer’s specifications alone establish which headset performs best in independent, side-by-side use.

Which non-Quest PC VR headset should you choose?

Start with your priorities and the equipment you already own. Bigscreen positions Beyond 2 around low weight and SteamVR integration; Pimax’s documentation makes Crystal Light a candidate to assess if your PC meets its stated requirements. These are different setups, not interchangeable recommendations.

  • Consider Bigscreen Beyond 2 if a very light headset and SteamVR-native operation appeal to you, and you are prepared to use or obtain base-station tracking hardware.
  • Consider Pimax Crystal Light if you want a dedicated PC VR headset and your computer meets Pimax’s published GPU, memory and connection guidance.

“Best” also depends on fit, optics, tracking, bundle contents and total system cost. The sources available for these models document compatibility and selected specifications, but do not provide a common independent test of comfort, visual quality, tracking or reliability.

Bigscreen Beyond 2: a lightweight, base-station-based choice

Bigscreen’s product page describes Beyond 2 as running natively on SteamVR and supporting SteamVR accessories. That is a manufacturer claim, not an independent compatibility test. The page lists the headset at 107 g and describes a face-scanned custom-fit cushion. Low listed weight may matter if you want a compact headset, but it does not guarantee comfort: the fit is individualized, and comfort depends on the person and setup.

The tracking requirement is central to the buying decision: Bigscreen says at least one base station is required. If you do not already have suitable tracking hardware, count the base stations and any controllers you need when estimating the complete system cost. The listed starting price of $1,019 is for the headset as stated on Bigscreen’s page; do not assume it includes all the equipment required for tracking. Confirm current pricing and package terms before ordering.

Bigscreen lists a total resolution of 5120 × 2560 and a refresh rate of up to 90 Hz. Those are manufacturer specifications, not a promise of a particular image quality or performance in every game. Its stated hardware package includes a soft strap, a 5 m fiber-optic cable and a link box.

Pimax Crystal Light: check your PC and tracking plans

Pimax marks Crystal Light as SteamVR compatible. Its published guidance calls for an RTX 3070 at minimum, recommends an RTX 4070, specifies at least 8 GB of VRAM and requires DisplayPort 1.4. These are Pimax’s requirements, not a universal guarantee that every game will run well at a given setting. Compare them with your PC’s exact graphics card, available video output and current Pimax guidance before buying.

Do not assume Crystal Light uses the same Lighthouse arrangement as Beyond 2: Pimax’s compatibility matrix says Lighthouse 2.0 is not supported on Crystal Light. The cited compatibility page does not establish enough about display, comfort, price or package contents to support a broader head-to-head verdict. Check the current product listing for those details and for what is included in your region’s bundle.

What SteamVR compatibility means for setup

A headset’s ability to connect to a PC is not, by itself, proof that it supports SteamVR. For this shortlist, Bigscreen describes Beyond 2 as SteamVR-native, while Pimax lists Crystal Light as SteamVR compatible. Check each manufacturer’s current setup documentation, then make sure you have the tracking equipment and controllers required for the particular headset.

Valve’s Steam store listing says the Index headset is compatible with SteamVR-tracked controllers, including Index Controllers, HTC Vive Wands and Vive Pro Wands. That establishes a controller-ecosystem connection, but does not by itself show that an Index headset is the best current purchase. See Valve Index on Steam for Valve’s listing.

Steam Link is a different route from using a SteamVR-native tethered headset. Steam says its Steam Link app streams a Steam library from a computer running Steam and SteamVR to supported Meta Quest, consumer HTC Vive Focus or PICO headsets. That support page does not add a non-Meta headset to the choices above; it also says business headsets are not officially supported by Steam Link at the time of the page. Details are at Steam Link support.

Where the original HTC Vive fits

The original HTC Vive is useful as legacy context, not as a current best-buy recommendation based on the cited specification page. HTC lists 1080 × 1200 pixels per eye, 90 Hz, a 110° field of view and SteamVR tracking for the original headset. Those dated specifications are not a comparison with current models or a statement about present-day availability. See HTC VIVE Developer Resources.
