If a PC game crashes on launch, shows a black screen, or reports missing game files, start with the exact error and the game’s minimum requirements. Then restart, verify files in the launcher, update Windows and graphics drivers, and test display or background-software changes one at a time. Reinstall only after those less disruptive checks.
Start by identifying the launch problem
Note what happens and when: does the game close immediately, stay open to a black screen, or display a missing-file error? Record the full error text or code, the game version if shown, and whether anything changed just before the problem started. A fresh restart is a useful first check; Steam’s troubleshooting guidance recommends beginning after restarting the computer. Steam Support
Check the game’s official minimum system requirements before changing hardware or spending money. A PC below the stated requirements may not run the game, and software adjustments cannot necessarily close that compatibility gap. Epic recommends checking Fortnite’s requirements when it fails to launch without an error; Capcom likewise warns that a system below minimum requirements may not run a game. Fix missing game files with the launcher
Use the launcher’s built-in verification before reinstalling. It checks the installation and can replace files that are missing or damaged. Close other demanding tasks while it runs, allow it to finish, then try launching again.

Steam: verify integrity of game files
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files, then select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to complete; it may take several minutes. Launch the game again afterward.
Steam notes that one or more files may fail verification normally when they are local configuration files that should not be replaced. Do not run multiple verifications at once. Steam Support
Epic Games Launcher: verify Fortnite files
For Fortnite installed through Epic, use the launcher’s verification option and follow Epic’s current on-screen instructions. Epic places verification early in its Fortnite troubleshooting flow. Launcher labels can change, so consult Epic’s file-verification instructions if the option is not where expected.

For a game crash on launch, update and isolate changes
After verifying files, install available Windows updates and update the graphics driver from the GPU maker or PC manufacturer’s official source. Restart after installing a graphics driver; Capcom includes both Windows and driver updates in its PC troubleshooting checklist. Capcom Support
Then test likely causes in a controlled way. Change one thing at a time and try launching again, so you can tell which adjustment helped:

- On a laptop with both integrated and discrete graphics, check Windows or the GPU control panel to confirm the game is assigned to the intended GPU. The exact controls depend on the system.
- If you can reach the game’s settings, lower graphics settings and use a sensible display mode or resolution as a stability test. Restore settings gradually if the game starts.
If the problem began after a driver, game, or settings change, note that detail for the game’s support team. Avoid changing several drivers, launch options, and graphics settings at once.
For a black screen when you launch a game
First confirm the game meets its requirements and complete file verification and driver updates. If you can access the game’s display settings, test a lower resolution or graphics preset and a different supported display mode. On a dual-GPU laptop, verify that the game uses the intended GPU.

Use launch arguments or graphics API changes only when the game’s own support instructions recommend them. Epic documents a Fortnite-specific Performance Mode option that may help Fortnite crashes, freezes, or black screens associated with DirectX 12. It is not a general fix for other games; follow Epic’s Fortnite graphics troubleshooting instructions for that title.

Close nonessential overlays and recording or performance software as a diagnostic step, rather than disabling security protection indiscriminately. If security software appears to have quarantined a game executable, first verify that the files came from the legitimate game installation, then follow the game developer’s or security vendor’s instructions. Do not create broad exclusions or turn off protection just to test a launch.

If graphical issues appear only after extended play, overheating may be involved. Epic recommends keeping vents unblocked, clearing dust from fans and airflow areas, and using the computer in a ventilated space. These steps are particularly relevant when the symptom develops during a session rather than immediately at startup. Epic Games Support
When to reinstall—and when not to
Reinstall the game only after restarting, checking requirements, verifying files, and testing updates or settings. Follow the game’s official uninstall and reinstall procedure so you do not inadvertently remove saved data or configuration you want to keep. Repeated file corruption or storage errors call for investigating the drive or contacting support; reinstalling or buying a new drive is not an automatic fix. Upgrade a component only when the game’s stated requirements identify a specific mismatch or a qualified diagnosis supports it.
Escalate with useful details
If the launch problem persists, send the game developer enough information to reproduce and diagnose it. Capcom’s PC checklist describes providing system specifications, a DxDiag report, and crash files where available. Capcom Support

- The exact error text or code, or a clear description of the crash or black screen.
- Your Windows version, PC model or key components, GPU, and graphics-driver version.
- The steps that reproduce the problem and what you already tried.
- A crash report or DxDiag report if the game’s support instructions request one.
