Before buying, check that your Windows PC can handle the games you want, then decide whether your network is suitable for wireless play or you would rather connect by cable.
Check that your PC can run your SteamVR games
Steam Link connects the Quest 3 to a computer running Steam and SteamVR; the PC does the work of running the games. Valve’s Steam Link listing, released November 30, 2023, specifies Windows 10 or newer and at least an NVIDIA GTX 970. Its recommended configuration includes 16 GB of RAM and an NVIDIA RTX 2070 or AMD RX 6600 or better. Treat those as the app listing’s stated minimums and recommendations, not a guarantee that every game will run well. Check the requirements for each SteamVR game you plan to play, since some may need a more capable PC.
Before purchase, make sure the intended computer can run both Steam and SteamVR, and compare its processor, graphics card and memory with the specific games’ requirements. Meeting the Steam Link listing’s minimum does not establish a particular frame rate or level of performance.
Choose wired or wireless play
Meta says Quest 3 supports PC VR using Meta Quest Link with a cable or Air Link. Valve’s Steam Link app provides a wireless route to SteamVR. The choice affects what you need to have in place:

Meta’s developer hardware setup documentation recommends a cable rated at 5 GB/s or higher in that development context. That is not stated as a universal consumer minimum for Quest Link, so verify the requirements for the cable and connection you choose rather than treating the developer recommendation as a blanket rule.
Assess your Wi-Fi before relying on wireless SteamVR
Valve’s Meta Store listing specifies a 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 router as the minimum for Steam Link and recommends Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E, with the computer connected to the network by cable. Those specifications describe the app’s requirements and recommendations; they cannot guarantee performance in a particular home. A router label alone does not account for your layout or local network conditions.

- Check that your router supports 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 or newer if you plan to use Steam Link wirelessly.
- For Valve’s recommended setup, connect the PC to the router over a wired network connection.
- If your existing router falls short, consider whether you want to upgrade it or use a wired headset connection instead. A newer router is a recommendation, not a promise of flawless play.
Consider headset fit, lenses and battery life
Meta’s Quest 3 specifications list a continuous IPD adjustment and approximately two hours of battery life. Those figures are useful for planning, but they cannot tell you whether the headset will fit your eyes comfortably or how long a particular PC VR session will last. If possible, try the fit before buying. For a used headset, inspect the lenses and overall condition directly; published specifications do not establish the condition of an individual unit.

- Identify the games. Check the PC requirements for the SteamVR titles you actually intend to play.
- Check the PC. Confirm Windows 10 or newer, Steam and SteamVR, then compare the computer with Valve’s Steam Link listing: NVIDIA GTX 970 or better as the stated minimum, with 16 GB RAM and an NVIDIA RTX 2070 or AMD RX 6600 or better in its recommended configuration.
- Pick the connection. Choose a USB-C data cable for wired Meta Quest Link, or confirm your home network meets the Steam Link wireless minimum.
- Check the network path. For wireless Steam Link, look for 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 at minimum; Valve recommends Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E and a wired PC connection to the router.
- Think about comfort and runtime. Consider whether the IPD adjustment and approximately two-hour listed battery life suit your needs, and inspect fit and condition if buying used.
Meta lists Quest 3 at 2064 × 2208 pixels per eye, 25 pixels per degree and Wi-Fi 6E certification. These specifications describe the headset; they do not replace the separate checks on PC capability, connection and game requirements.
