Take the Kindle and everything else out of the bag, then start with dry cleaning. For most small everyday marks, gently blot with a slightly damp soft cloth; use diluted mild soap only if the bag’s own care instructions allow it. Wipe away residue and let the bag dry completely before putting the Kindle back. Check the label or maker’s instructions first: a padded sleeve, fabric-covered case, and tote can all need different care.
Check the bag’s care instructions first
Look for a care label, the product page, or cleaning instructions from the manufacturer. “Fabric Kindle bag” can describe different materials and constructions, and advice for one manufacturer’s bag is not a universal method. Printed fabric, water-repellent finishes, padding, and leather trim may change what is safe. If the instructions are missing or unclear, keep cleaning gentle and avoid adding more moisture than necessary.
For example, Kipling’s care instructions say its crinkle-nylon products can be wiped with a wet cloth and that water with mild soap can be used for a deep stain; they also advise against bleach and soaking. Bellroy’s fabric-product guide describes using diluted detergent with a damp cloth or sponge, wiping away residue, and drying in shade, while advising against machine washing and soaking. These directions apply to those brands’ products, not automatically to an unidentified Kindle bag. A separate bag-care document recommends a slightly wet cloth for outside fabric and neutral soap for deep stains, and cautions against moistening leather combined with fabric.
Clean everyday dirt and small marks
- Empty the bag. Remove the Kindle and anything else inside before using a damp cloth. Keep the device away from the cleaning area.
- Remove loose debris while dry. Shake the bag out, then use a dry soft cloth or soft brush to lift lint and crumbs. A lint roller is optional.
- Blot the mark. Lightly dampen a soft cloth with cool or room-temperature water and gently press it against the mark. Avoid scrubbing, which can rough up fabric or affect a finish, and use as little moisture as you can.
- Use mild soap only if permitted. If water alone does not help and the bag’s care instructions allow it, mix a small amount of mild soap or detergent into water. Test the solution on a discreet area first. Apply it to the cloth—not directly to the bag—and gently blot the mark.
- Lift away residue. With a clean cloth lightly dampened with water, wipe the treated area so soap does not remain on the fabric. Do not rinse or soak the bag.
- Air-dry fully. Leave the bag in a ventilated, shaded place until the fabric, lining, and any padding are completely dry. Do not use a hair dryer or radiator, and do not put the Kindle back while any part of the bag is damp.
What to avoid
- Soaking or machine washing: Do not immerse the bag or put it in a washing machine unless its manufacturer explicitly says that method is safe.
- Bleach, solvents, and aggressive stain removers: Avoid bleach, alcohol, acetone, and strong cleaners unless the maker specifically approves them for that item.
- Scrubbing and excess water: Hard rubbing and saturation can affect fabric, finishes, trims, or padding. A damp cloth is safer than pouring water or cleaner onto the bag.
- Direct heat: Let the bag air-dry rather than using a hair dryer or radiator. Amazon’s Kindle Paperwhite (11th Generation) guidance warns against external heat when drying the device; that is device-safety guidance, not a cleaning procedure for a fabric cover.
Amazon also advises users not to intentionally immerse a Kindle or expose it to liquids such as beverages, and recommends a soft cloth for the screen while avoiding abrasive materials in its Kindle cleaning guidance. Keep the reader separate while cleaning the bag; do not treat device-cleaning instructions as permission to wet the accessory.

When a stain does not come out
Do not assume a method that works for ordinary dirt will remove ink, grease, makeup, or a set-in stain. The safe treatment depends on the fabric, finish, trim, and stain, and removal is not guaranteed. If gentle blotting does not work, stop before trying a stronger cleaner and ask the bag’s manufacturer for advice—especially if the item has leather, a special coating, or a printed surface.
