A phone photo with one sharp subject and a soft foreground or background may be showing the intended depth-of-field effect, not a camera fault. Variable-aperture controls and portrait-style blur can make that separation stronger. If the whole frame is soft, edges show motion streaks, or close subjects never sharpen, check focus distance, movement, the lens and camera settings instead.
Why is only part of my picture in focus?
A camera focuses at a particular distance. Objects closer to or farther from that focus plane may look softer, especially in close-ups or when the camera uses a wide aperture. Xiaomi describes this as a normal effect with its wide-aperture and telephoto cameras: the selected focus area stays sharp while objects at other distances can blur (Xiaomi camera depth-of-field guidance).
Samsung likewise says that focus range varies with aperture, shooting distance and subject position, and that partial blur can be a normal optical characteristic. That note appears in its troubleshooting guidance for the 200 MP setting on Ultra models, so it should not be read as a diagnosis for every phone or every blurry photo (Samsung camera troubleshooting).
“Variable aperture” does not mean every phone has a user-adjustable physical opening. Some phones let you change a physical aperture; others offer a software-generated aperture or background blur, or no such control. Menu names and available features depend on the model, software and region.

How do I tell normal background blur from a camera problem?

These patterns are clues, not a guaranteed diagnosis. Samsung and Xiaomi list focus, movement, close-focus limits, lens contamination and accessories among possible sources of blur (Samsung; Xiaomi troubleshooting).
How do I make the whole photo sharp?
- Choose what should be sharp. Tap the main subject on the preview. If the phone has locked focus or exposure from a previous tap or press, tap again or leave the locked state using the camera app’s control.
- Give a close subject more room. Move back until the camera can focus, then crop later if needed. Minimum focus distance varies by phone and by camera. Samsung’s US support guidance, for example, specifies at least 12 inches for its standard lens and 20 inches for its telephoto lens; those figures apply to the Samsung models covered by that page, not all phones.
- Use a narrower physical aperture if available. A smaller opening can increase the range of distances that appear acceptably sharp. The exact control and its effect vary by model; do not assume a software blur slider changes the physical aperture.
- Stabilize the shot and add light. Brace the phone or use a stable surface, and avoid moving the phone or subject while taking the picture. Better light can help the camera use a faster exposure, reducing motion blur.
- Check all camera openings. Wipe a smudged lens gently with a clean microfiber cloth. If a lens protector or full-coverage case may be interfering, remove it temporarily and take a comparison photo. Cleaning helps contamination; it will not change depth of field or repair a focus fault.
- Isolate an app or autofocus issue. Try another camera mode, close and reopen the camera app, and restart the phone. If the whole scene remains soft across modes after checking focus distance and accessories, consult the manufacturer’s support for that model.
Why are my close-up phone photos blurry?
Close subjects are especially likely to fall outside a camera’s minimum focusing distance, and close shooting also makes depth-of-field blur more noticeable. If a flower or small object is soft, first move the phone back a little and tap the subject again. Avoid assuming that zooming in will help: some phones switch to a telephoto camera at higher zoom, and Samsung warns that the telephoto camera on supported models may not focus well on nearby objects.

Use the camera or macro mode intended for close subjects if your model offers one. If the phone has multiple rear cameras, changing the zoom can change which physical camera is active, so the closest usable distance can change too. The available modes and distances are model-specific.
What does variable aperture change?
A physical aperture changes the size of the lens opening. A wider opening can create stronger separation between the focused subject and objects at other distances; a narrower opening can bring a broader range of distances into acceptable focus. This is useful when the subject should stand out, but less useful when several objects at different distances all need to look sharp.

Some phones instead simulate aperture and background blur computationally. The result may be adjustable after capture, but editing depends on the mode and device. Huawei says supported Aperture-mode images can be refocused and have virtual blur adjusted in Gallery; blur created by a physical aperture cannot be edited in that way (Huawei Aperture mode guidance).

Huawei cautions that its Wide aperture mode may produce poor results in low light, with repetitive textures, when the subject is more than two meters away, or when the phone is too hot. It recommends good light, adjusting aperture and exposure on screen, and letting an overheated phone cool. These are instructions for Huawei’s mode, not universal limits for phone cameras (Huawei Wide aperture mode limitations).

For any phone, inspect the result at full size before relying on a strong simulated blur: software may struggle around fine edges or similarly patterned areas. If the subject outline looks cut out or important details are softened, reduce the effect or use the standard photo mode.
