You can get your data back after removing an iOS beta only if you have a compatible backup. Apple’s supported beta-removal process erases the iPhone and installs the current public version of iOS; it does not preserve the phone’s current contents. The safest option is an archived backup made before you installed the beta.

Can you downgrade iOS without losing your data?

Not through Apple’s documented beta-removal process. Apple says removing the beta and installing the current public release requires erasing and restoring the device. You can restore your data afterward from a compatible backup, but that is different from downgrading in place without erasing.

Apple’s instructions address returning from beta software to the current public iOS release. They do not establish that you can install any older iOS version on demand.

Before you begin: check your backup

Find an archived backup made before you installed the beta and confirm it is available before erasing the iPhone. Apple warns that backups made while using beta software may not work with earlier iOS versions. If your only backup was created on the beta, you cannot count on being able to restore it after returning to the public release.

Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

Apple’s beta removal instructions also warn that a backup may require a newer iOS version. In that case, the iPhone may need to be updated before the backup can be restored, which could prevent you from staying on the older software you wanted.

How to remove an iOS beta and restore your iPhone

  1. Check your backup first. Locate an archived backup from before beta installation. Do not proceed on the assumption that a beta-era backup will work with an earlier iOS release.
  2. Prepare a computer. Use an up-to-date Mac or a Windows PC with the Apple Devices app. Apple’s process requires a computer to restore the iPhone.
  3. Connect the iPhone and enter recovery mode. Use a USB cable that fits the iPhone and the computer’s available port. Follow Apple’s instructions to put your iPhone in recovery mode.
  4. Choose Restore when prompted. This erases the iPhone and installs the current publicly released version of iOS. Wait for the restore to finish, then follow the on-screen setup steps.
  5. Restore your compatible backup during setup. Choose the iCloud or computer backup you verified before starting.

Choose the right backup restore method

Backup type Where you select it What you need
iCloud backup During iPhone setup The iPhone must be at setup or erased to restore an iCloud backup.
Computer backup In Finder on a Mac, or Apple Devices or iTunes on Windows, as appropriate A computer, a USB connection, and access to the backup.

Apple explains both options in its backup restore instructions. A computer restore requires connecting the iPhone over USB and selecting Restore Backup. Check that the cable connector matches the iPhone and that the other end fits a port on your computer.

What if the backup cannot be restored?

If setup says the backup requires a newer version of iOS, Apple’s guidance is to update the device before restoring it. That may mean the backup cannot be used while keeping the iPhone on the older public release. If the only available backup was created on the beta, Apple does not guarantee it will work with the earlier version.

Do not erase the phone until you have checked which backups are available and understand this compatibility risk. Without a compatible backup, Apple’s documented process does not provide a way to preserve the current data while removing the beta.

What this process does—and does not—do

  • It does: erase the iPhone, install the current public iOS release, and allow you to restore a compatible backup.
  • It does not: downgrade in place while keeping the phone’s current contents, guarantee that a beta-era backup will restore, or establish a way to install any historical iOS version you choose.
