The Tesla Model Y is the stronger choice if you prioritize range, a smoother ride, or the option of a third row. The Rivian R2 is a better fit if cargo space, towing, an adventure-oriented design, and a driver display matter more. The key catch is timing: as of October 4, 2026, Rivian lists the R2 Performance as available now, while lower-priced R2 trims are scheduled for later. Compare the exact versions you can actually order, not just the starting prices.
Rivian R2 vs. Tesla Model Y at a glance
| What matters | Rivian R2 | Tesla Model Y |

Price and availability: compare the trim you can buy
The R2’s advertised entry price is not the price of an immediately available vehicle. Rivian’s product page, accessed October 4, 2026, lists Performance at $57,990 and available now, Premium at $53,990 for late 2026, and Standard at $44,990 for 2027. These are starting prices and schedules, not guaranteed delivery dates. Recheck Rivian’s live R2 page before placing an order.
For Model Y, the September 2026 Edmunds comparison republished by AP reported a base price of $41,380, rising to $63,380 for a three-row Model Y L including destination. Those are figures reported in that comparison, not a live Tesla quote. Taxes, options, destination charges, incentives, and configuration can change the amount you pay; compare current delivered prices for vehicles with similar equipment.
That makes the $44,990 future Standard R2 a poor apples-to-apples comparison with a Model Y available to order today. If you need a vehicle now, compare the R2 Performance with the specific Model Y configuration you can buy. If you can wait, include the R2’s scheduled lower-priced trims—but confirm the delivery estimate when ordering.

Range: Model Y leads in the reported trim estimates
Rivian currently lists estimated ranges of 275 miles for R2 Standard and 330 miles for Premium. The AP/Edmunds comparison reports 330 miles for other R2 variants and 345 miles for Standard Long Range. For Model Y, that comparison reports estimates from 294 miles for base all-wheel drive to 357 miles for rear-wheel-drive Premium. These are version-specific estimates; they do not mean every Model Y out-ranges every R2.
Independent testing gives a useful, but configuration-specific, reality check. In Edmunds’ 2026 EV Range Test, republished by AP, an R2 Performance covered 304 miles against its 330-mile estimate. That result describes the tested vehicle and test conditions, not a guaranteed distance for every R2 or every trip.

Speed, temperature, weather, wheels, route, and driving style affect actual range. Compare the estimates for the precise trims you are considering, then leave a practical buffer for your regular trips and charging stops. If range is your primary concern, the Model Y’s higher reported maximum estimate gives it the edge in this comparison.
Charging: both use NACS, but speed depends on conditions
Both vehicles use NACS, and Rivian says every R2 has a NACS charge port with access to more than 21,000 Tesla Superchargers in the US and Canada. Network access makes charging stops more comparable than they might be between vehicles using different networks, but it does not make every station or trip identical.

Rivian advertises that the R2 can add 150 miles in 15 minutes under optimal conditions. That is a company claim, not a typical trip guarantee. Rivian notes: “Charging speeds vary based on battery capacity, state of charge, and temperature, charger capacity, weather, site-specific conditions and more.” In Edmunds’ comparison, Model Y charged slightly quicker in its testing. The actual stop depends on the vehicle’s battery and charge state, the charger, and conditions at the site.
Space, seating, towing, and outdoor use
Choose R2 for cargo and towing capacity
In the 2026 Edmunds comparison republished by AP, the R2 has 90.1 cubic feet of total cargo capacity versus 75.5 cubic feet for the five-seat Model Y. The same comparison reports maximum towing capacities of 4,400 pounds for R2 and 3,500 pounds for Model Y. Treat these as comparison figures, and verify the precise vehicle’s equipment and configuration before planning to tow; maximum ratings do not establish that every trim includes the required towing equipment.

Choose Model Y if you need occasional third-row seating
Selected Model Y configurations offer a third row, which gives it a seating option the five-seat R2 does not have. Edmunds describes the extra row as best suited to children and small adults, and notes that raising it reduces cargo room. It is a flexibility advantage, not a substitute for checking whether the seats fit the people who will use them.
Consider R2 for rough-road-oriented features
Rivian markets the R2 for adventure use. Its product page lists 9.6 inches of ground clearance and 19.7 inches of water fording under stated closed-vehicle conditions. These are manufacturer-published specifications and conditions, not independent proof of performance on a particular trail or in every water crossing. The cited comparison does not establish an equivalent Model Y off-road test, so judge the vehicles by your actual route and requirements rather than assuming a head-to-head capability result.

Ride comfort, cabin interface, and driver assistance
Edmunds’ comparison found the Model Y rode more smoothly over bumps, while the R2 had more rear headroom. Those are observations from its comparison, not a guarantee that every passenger will prefer the same cabin; a test drive on roads you use regularly can help resolve the difference.
The R2 includes a digital driver display, and Edmunds found its touchscreen more responsive and enjoyable. The comparison describes Model Y without a driver display. If you prefer key driving information in front of you rather than on a central screen, that distinction may matter more than screen size or software preference.
Edmunds describes hands-free driving features in both vehicles. Its account says Rivian’s system works on roads with painted lane markings but not in city driving. Driver-assistance features are not autonomous driving: stay attentive, follow the vehicle’s instructions, and be ready to take control.
Which electric SUV should you choose?
- Choose Model Y if you put higher reported range, a smoother ride, or the option of a third row ahead of R2’s cargo and towing figures.
- Choose R2 if the larger reported cargo capacity, higher reported maximum tow rating, adventure-oriented features, or digital driver display better match your needs.
- Wait or compare again if the R2 Standard or Premium is the version that makes the price work for you; their listed delivery timing is later than Performance’s.
Before deciding, check the live configurators for the exact trim, current delivered price, estimated delivery, range, seating, and towing equipment. Then test-drive the likely configurations if ride and interface are close calls.
