You can keep installed games when replacing a handheld’s SSD by cloning the old drive, but that is different from protecting game saves. A clean operating-system recovery may leave you with a working handheld and no installed games; cloud saves may not cover every title. First identify the exact device and OS, back up local data, then choose the right migration route.
Choose between cloning and reinstalling
Cloning copies the existing drive to a replacement, with the aim of carrying over the operating system, installed games, settings, and other files. A clean install or recovery puts a fresh operating system on the new drive; expect to reinstall games unless the recovery option specifically preserves them.

ASUS’s guide for its Ally-family devices recommends a fresh Windows install but also says an external SSD enclosure can be used to clone the existing drive. It does not document a cloning procedure, so do not assume a generic walkthrough is guaranteed for your model. ASUS’s SSD upgrade guide
Back up saves before removing the old SSD
Steam Cloud can store saves, settings, profile statistics, and other data when a game supports it. Steam also says many games do not store saves in Cloud, and lost saves may not be recoverable by Steam Support. - Confirm that recent saves have synchronized for each game that uses Steam Cloud.
- Look for local saves or other files that are not covered by cloud sync, and copy them to separate storage.
- Keep the old SSD intact. Do not wipe or repurpose it until the new drive boots and you have checked the games, saves, launchers, and files you need.
Identify the exact handheld and SSD before buying
Form factor is model-specific. ASUS’s guide, dated 15 October 2025, specifies an M.2 NVMe 2230 drive for the original ROG Ally and an M.2 NVMe 2280 drive for the ROG Ally X, ROG Xbox Ally, and ROG Xbox Ally X. Those sizes do not establish compatibility for a Steam Deck or Lenovo Legion Go. Verify the exact model or revision and its manufacturer’s drive specification before ordering.

Use the recovery route for your device and OS
ROG Ally family: Windows install or clone
ASUS’s 15 October 2025 guide covers the original ROG Ally, ROG Ally X, ROG Xbox Ally, and ROG Xbox Ally X. For a fresh install, it directs owners to close the device, connect the included 65W charger, enter BIOS, and use Cloud Recovery over Wi-Fi. ASUS says Cloud Recovery restores the OS storage device to its original state and erases all data on that device. Back up first; if BitLocker is enabled, obtain the recovery key. If your priority is keeping the existing installation, ASUS identifies cloning with an external SSD enclosure as an alternative, but leaves the cloning steps to the user. Confirm the replacement and enclosure fit the precise Ally model, then use a cloning method documented for that hardware and software. Do not remove or overwrite the original drive until the clone has been tested.

Steam Deck: distinguish repair from re-image
Valve’s recovery instructions require a USB key of at least 8GB, and creating the recovery media formats the selected USB key, erasing its contents. In the recovery desktop, “Repair SteamOS” attempts to preserve games and personal content; “Re-image Device” fully wipes user information, installed games, applications, and operating systems. Valve currently lists Steam Deck, Steam Machine, Steam Frame, and Legion Go S as officially “Powered by SteamOS.” Other AMD devices may have improved compatibility but can have limited Steam Support. Lenovo Legion Go: follow its own service material
Lenovo’s support page for Legion Go 83E1 provides removal and replacement videos, including an SSD video, but the cited information does not establish a complete teardown, SSD size, or manufacturer-backed cloning or recovery procedure. Use the material for your exact model and confirm the compatible drive and OS migration route rather than borrowing instructions for an Ally or Steam Deck.

- Record the model and OS. Check the device’s exact model or revision, then confirm the compatible drive specification and manufacturer repair instructions.
- Secure your data. Verify cloud sync game by game, copy local-only saves and personal files, and decide whether to clone or reinstall before opening the case.
- Prepare the migration route. For cloning, arrange a compatible enclosure and a trusted workflow. For recovery, prepare the correct media and network access where required. SteamOS recovery media needs a USB key of at least 8GB and erases that key when written.
- Follow the device-specific teardown. ASUS advises removing microSD cards, discharging the battery to 25% or below, disconnecting the battery before replacing the SSD, and taking care with model-specific back-panel cables. Use the correct tools and keep screws organized.
- Test before retiring the old drive. Boot the replacement and verify the operating system, games, saves, launchers, and personal files you care about before wiping or reusing the original SSD.
For Steam Deck, Valve lists Phillips Size 1 screws for the LCD model and T6 Torx screws for OLED. Valve says it is not responsible for screws or components damaged during opening or modification, and resulting damage is not covered under the product warranty; that is not the same as saying that opening the device cancels all warranty coverage.
