A website can let you read a page in a browser while denying a feed reader access to its RSS endpoint. That is because RSS fetching, search crawling, and other automated requests can be handled by different rules and technical controls. A robots.txt directive expresses crawler preferences; it is not a login system or a guarantee that a feed will be available. If your reader fails, the cause may instead be a feed-specific server response or a bot-management control.

Why is this website blocking my RSS reader?

A feed reader requests a feed URL separately from the page you open in a browser. The publisher or its hosting provider can respond differently to those requests. For example, the feed may have been removed or changed, the server may return an error to a particular client, or an upstream bot-management service may limit automated traffic. Being able to open the main site therefore does not establish that every feed endpoint is available to every reader.

There is no single reason every site restricts automated access. Owners can use crawler rules to express preferences about parts of a site, and infrastructure providers offer technical controls for managing bot traffic. Some publishers may also have site-specific concerns about bandwidth, security, or how content is used; those motives should not be assumed without a statement from the publisher.

Can a website block RSS feeds?

Yes. A publisher can restrict a feed through the feed host or server response, even though the feed URL is publicly reachable in other circumstances. Google says it cannot itself prevent a user from accessing a publicly available feed, but publishers can return an error to Google’s Feedfetcher user agent or work with their hosting service to limit feed access. Other feed readers do not necessarily behave like Google’s service.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

This is distinct from publishing a rule in robots.txt. The IETF’s Robots Exclusion Protocol standard states, “These rules are not a form of access authorization.” A disallow rule communicates crawler preferences; it does not authenticate users, secure the URL, or itself guarantee that a request will be technically blocked. See RFC 9309.

Does robots.txt apply to RSS feeds?

It depends on the client. Google’s general-purpose crawlers read robots.txt, but Google says the protocol does not apply to its user-controlled crawlers, including feed subscriptions. Its Feedfetcher documentation says: “Since Feedfetcher requests come from explicit action by human users, and not from automated crawlers, Feedfetcher ignores robots.txt rules.” That describes Google’s implementation, not every feed reader or automated client.

Google also says Feedfetcher retrieves a feed only after a user starts an app or service that requests it, and may request common feeds once for multiple users of a service to conserve bandwidth. A publisher can still restrict access at the feed server or through its host, regardless of what Google’s Feedfetcher does with robots.txt. Read Google’s explanations of how it interprets robots.txt and Feedfetcher.

Which kind of automated access is being controlled?

“Automated access” covers different clients and different purposes. A search crawler discovers and indexes pages; a user-directed feed fetcher retrieves subscriptions; and a site may also use controls to manage other automated traffic. Treating these as one category can make a restriction confusing: a rule or response intended for one type of request may not determine what happens to another.

Access type or control What it does What it does not establish
Search crawler and robots.txt Communicates crawler preferences about URL paths; Google says its general crawlers read the file. It is not access authorization or a security measure, according to RFC 9309.
User-directed feed fetcher Retrieves a feed in response to a user’s subscription or app action. Google’s Feedfetcher ignores robots.txt. Google’s behavior does not show that all feed readers ignore crawler rules or receive the same server response.
Feed-host or server response Can return a feed, an error, or otherwise limit access to the feed endpoint. A successful browser visit to the site’s main pages does not prove the feed endpoint is available.
Bot-management controls A provider may offer technical controls for handling automated traffic. Cloudflare, for example, documents bot-management controls in its Bot Management API. A particular provider’s features are not universal web standards and do not identify why a specific site denied a request.
Use-specific content signals Cloudflare describes signals for communicating preferences about search, AI input, and AI training. Such signals express preferences; they are not proof that every automated client will comply or that an RSS feed is blocked.

What content signals and bot controls mean for readers

Some website controls communicate how an owner prefers content to be used; others are technical mechanisms for handling requests. Cloudflare has described content signals relating to search, AI input, and AI training, while also noting that robots.txt may not stop unwanted scraping. Separately, it documents bot-management controls. These are examples of one provider’s services, not a universal mechanism or guarantee that a preference will be enforced.

Cloudflare reported in 2025 that more than 3.8 million domains used its managed robots.txt service to express that they did not want their content used for training. That is a company-reported figure about that service and use case—not a count of sites restricting RSS or automated access generally. See Cloudflare’s announcement.

What to check when a feed reader fails

  1. Confirm the feed URL. Check whether the publisher still lists that exact feed address; the feed may have moved, changed, or been discontinued.
  2. Distinguish the feed endpoint from the website. A page loading in a browser does not show that the feed URL returns successfully to your reader.
  3. Look at the response or reader error. A server error or denial points to the feed endpoint or its host, whereas a robots.txt rule is a crawler preference and not, by itself, authentication.
  4. Use the publisher’s permitted alternatives. Check for another published feed, email updates, or a contact channel. Do not try to bypass an explicit restriction; ask the publisher what access it permits.
