Before buying a first-generation Apple product, identify the exact model, confirm it can be set up without someone else’s account, test the functions you need, and check whether Apple still services it. “First-generation” can mean an original iPhone, AirPods, or another product family, so use model-specific checks rather than assuming every Apple device has the same setup, battery information, or repair options.

Identify the exact product first

Ask the seller for the model name and generation, configuration or storage where relevant, serial number, clear current photos, known faults, battery condition, repair history, included accessories, and proof of purchase if available. Use Apple’s serial-number instructions to locate the number for the product family, then compare the device’s details with the listing and any box or receipt.

A matching serial number can help identify a product, but it does not prove that the device is genuine, functional, or honestly described. Treat any mismatch between the device, listing, and packaging as a reason to pause and ask for an explanation.

Check setup and account locks

For an iPhone

Ask the seller to erase the iPhone and let you begin setup. If setup requests the previous owner’s Apple Account, the phone is still linked to that account. Do not buy it until the seller removes the lock. Apple’s pre-owned iPhone guidance is explicit: “Don’t buy an iPhone if Activation Lock is enabled.” Avoid proceeding if the display says “iPhone Locked to Owner” or another prior-owner account prompt remains.

#1 Best Overall
Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

If an iPhone is still on the Hello screen, Apple says it must be set up, including activation, before it can be fully tested. For an online purchase, check the seller’s reliability and understand the return period, process, eligible reasons, and shipping costs in case the phone arrives locked. See Apple’s pre-owned iPhone guide.

For other Apple products

Do not assume iPhone Activation Lock steps or iPhone battery and parts menus apply to AirPods, Apple Watch, or a Mac. Confirm the setup and account requirements for the exact model, and verify that it pairs or activates with a compatible device you can use.

Inspect condition, functions, and repairs

Physical condition and core functions

Inspect the device for cracks, dents, corrosion, loose parts, or other signs of damage. Once an iPhone is unlocked and at the Home Screen, test the display and touch response, buttons, cameras, speakers and microphones, charging, wireless connections, and cellular service if the model supports it and you need it. This is a practical check, not a complete diagnostic or guarantee that hidden faults are absent.

For other product families, check the functions that matter for that specific model: for example, whether AirPods pair and charge in their case, or whether an Apple Watch charges and pairs with a compatible iPhone. Confirm that the case, cable, charger, or other included components match the exact generation rather than relying on a generic accessory list.

Battery condition and parts history

Ask how the battery performs and whether the device has been repaired. On supported iPhone models and software, check Settings > General > About for Parts and Service History. Apple says an “Unknown” label can mean a part was installed incompletely, is non-genuine or previously used, or is not functioning as expected. The menu and the meaning of its entries depend on the model and software; its absence does not establish that the phone has never been repaired. Apple’s iPhone guidance also recommends asking about damage, battery health, and parts or service history.

Check whether Apple service is still available

Apple’s service classifications are based on how long ago it stopped distributing a product for sale, not simply on the product’s launch date. Under Apple’s current policy, a product is generally vintage after more than five and less than seven years since distribution ended, and obsolete after more than seven years. Apple says hardware service is discontinued for obsolete products. Vintage products may still be serviceable if parts are available. Apple’s policy describes service and parts for at least five years after last distribution, with longer periods possible as required by law or up to seven years subject to availability. Some Mac laptops may qualify for battery-only repair for up to ten years, subject to parts availability.

Apple iPhone 13, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This pre-owned product is not Apple certified, but has been professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon-qualified suppliers.
  • There will be no visible cosmetic imperfections when held at an arm’s length.
  • This product is eligible for a replacement or refund within 90 days of receipt if you are not satisfied.
  • Product may come in generic Box.

Check the exact model on Apple’s service and vintage/obsolete list, then ask an authorized service channel about availability for your region. Classifications and parts availability can change; do not treat a general age threshold as confirmation that a specific repair can be performed.

Use coverage information as a cross-check

Look up the device’s coverage status, but do not use it as proof of its condition, ownership, or the accuracy of the seller’s description. Apple notes that purchase-date information can be wrong, recently submitted information may not appear yet, and additional programs may not be reflected. If the date needs correction, Apple may ask for the original receipt. Consumer-law rights also vary by jurisdiction. See Apple’s explanation of coverage information.

  • Identity and completeness: exact generation and configuration, consistency across device and listing, and included components.
  • Usability: setup without another person’s account, working functions you need, and compatibility with your devices and software.
  • Condition and repairs: physical and functional state, battery information, replacement parts, and the quality of the seller’s documentation.
  • Service exposure: current vintage or obsolete status, regional repair availability, parts, and likely cost if a critical component fails.
  • Transaction protection: seller history, return terms, payment protection, and available proof of ownership.
  • Price: compare items of similar condition and completeness, and account for repair risk. A low price does not offset an account lock or a fault that makes the device unusable.

Before you pay

  1. Get the exact model and serial number, current photos, known-fault and repair disclosures, battery information, accessory details, and proof of purchase if available.
  2. Verify that the device matches the listing and can be set up without another person’s account. For an iPhone, do not proceed while Activation Lock is enabled.
  3. Test the functions that matter for that model, and check battery or repair-history information where available.
  4. Check Apple’s current service classification for the exact model and ask about regional repair availability.
  5. For an online purchase, read the return terms and seller information before sending payment.
