Check your Rivian R2’s 17-character VIN in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) recall lookup. If it shows an unrepaired recall, follow Rivian’s safety instructions and contact Rivian or the service channel it specifies to arrange the remedy. A model-level search cannot confirm whether a particular R2 is affected, and some newly announced recalls may not yet have all affected VINs identified.
Check the R2’s VIN, not only the model name
NHTSA’s VIN lookup is designed to check an individual vehicle for unrepaired recalls. A search by make, model, and year returns general information; it does not establish the recall status of your specific R2.
- Find the VIN. It is a 17-character number visible at the lower left of the windshield. You can also find it on the vehicle registration and, in some cases, an insurance card.
- Enter it in NHTSA’s recall lookup. Review any unrepaired recalls associated with that vehicle.
- Read the campaign information and any Rivian notice. Pay particular attention to instructions about whether or how to operate the vehicle while waiting for service.
NHTSA says VIN identification for some newly announced recalls may be incomplete at first. If you receive a Rivian notice after a clear search, check the VIN again.
Follow the manufacturer’s safety guidance and arrange the remedy
Use the interim safety instructions in Rivian’s notice for your vehicle and campaign. General recall guidance is not a substitute for campaign-specific directions, especially about driving or parking the R2 while awaiting repair.

NHTSA advises owners who receive a recall notification to follow the manufacturer’s interim safety guidance and contact a local dealership to have the recalled part fixed for free. For an R2, confirm with Rivian which service location or channel handles the campaign, what the remedy involves, and how to schedule it. NHTSA says manufacturers are required to provide a remedy.
Recheck official information as it changes
A recall record may change as affected VINs are identified. If you have received a manufacturer notice, or a new notice arrives after your first search, run the VIN lookup again and follow the latest Rivian instructions. NHTSA’s Search Safety Issues page also distinguishes the issue date—the date a safety issue was reported—from the search date range for when a recall was published. Those dates describe different events.

What is known about R2 recalls
Rivian announced on May 27, 2026, that first R2 customer deliveries would begin June 9, 2026, according to its R2 launch announcement. That establishes the delivery timeline, but it does not establish that a particular R2 recall exists or identify its affected vehicles, defect, interim instructions, or remedy.
For that reason, do not assume that every R2 is affected—or that none is—based on a general model search or an unverified online summary. Use the current VIN-specific NHTSA result and Rivian’s notice for campaign details.

If you suspect a safety defect
If you believe your R2 has a safety defect that is not addressed by an existing recall, NHTSA also accepts safety complaints. The agency says complaints can contribute to its screening and investigation process. Filing a complaint is separate from checking a recall or arranging an existing recall remedy.
