For Google Home users who want local control, the best choice depends on what you need to stay local. Choose a Google Home Matter hub to control compatible Matter devices locally in your home. Choose Home Assistant Green or Hubitat Elevation when you want a broader automation controller that can keep working through an internet outage, provided your devices and integrations support local communication. You can use a dedicated controller alongside Google Home, but that does not make every Google Home feature or cloud-connected device local.

What “local control” means with Google Home

Local control is not an all-or-nothing property of a smart home. It can describe commands traveling within your home network, automations running on a local hub, or a system continuing to work when the internet is unavailable. Those are related but distinct capabilities.

  • Google Home Matter control: Google says commands you issue to Matter devices while at home are carried out locally, over home Wi-Fi or Thread. If you issue a command while away, it uses the internet and cloud before the hub communicates with the device locally. Google’s Matter setup and control guidance explains this distinction.
  • Local automation: A dedicated controller can run automations locally when devices communicate with it through supported local protocols or integrations. A cloud-only device or optional cloud feature may still need internet access.
  • Google Home compatibility: A hub can work with Google Home without every command or automation between the two systems being local. Check the integration route as well as the device’s radio and protocol.

Matter’s multi-admin feature allows a compatible Matter device to be used in multiple certified apps, including Google Home. That makes it possible to use Google Home and another Matter platform with the same device; it does not make every non-Matter device compatible with either platform.

Which hub should you choose?

Option Best fit Google Home connection Local-control and hardware notes
Home Assistant Green A plug-and-play starting point for a configurable automation controller Home Assistant says it works alongside Google Home. Home Assistant Cloud is an optional way to connect Google Home. Local devices and automations can keep working through an internet outage when the device integration communicates locally. The hardware listing presents Connect ZBT-2 separately for Zigbee or Thread; Green is not described there as having built-in Zigbee or Thread radios.
Hubitat Elevation A dedicated hub with built-in automation apps and local processing Hubitat lists Google Home as a compatible third-party service. Hubitat says ongoing hub use and the listed local and remote access features do not require a subscription. Confirm the exact model and device compatibility for your setup.
Google Home Matter hub Adding and controlling Matter devices in Google Home Native Google Home Matter hub role Google says in-home Matter commands are local. Models differ in whether they support Thread as well as Wi-Fi; Matter setup also requires IPv6 on the home wireless network.

Home Assistant Green: a flexible local automation option

Home Assistant Green is the clearest fit if you want an appliance with Home Assistant installed and want to build a broader automation system around it. Home Assistant says local-protocol devices and their automations do not need an internet connection. Its examples include Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter, Thread and ESPHome. Whether a particular device remains available offline depends on its integration and whether it relies on a vendor cloud. See Home Assistant’s explanation of offline operation.

Green is not a universal radio hub by itself. Home Assistant’s hardware listing identifies the Connect ZBT-2 separately for Zigbee or Thread support. Check what your devices use before buying accessories; a product being supported by Home Assistant does not, by itself, establish that Green has the necessary radio built in.

Home Assistant can coexist with Google Home, but its FAQ describes Home Assistant Cloud as an optional route for Google Home integration and remote access. Do not assume that exposing a Home Assistant device to Google Home means the full path between the services works without cloud access. Details are in Home Assistant’s frequently asked questions.

Hubitat Elevation: a dedicated hub with local processing

Hubitat Elevation is worth considering if you want a dedicated automation hub rather than a configurable Home Assistant appliance. Hubitat says its hub uses local processing, includes automation applications and supports Google Home as a compatible third-party service. It also says ongoing use of the hub, local access, its app and compatible services such as Google Home do not require a subscription. These are Hubitat’s published claims, not results from comparative independent testing. Review the Hubitat Elevation hub information and Hubitat’s home automation overview, and check support for your particular devices and model.

Google Home Matter hubs: the focused choice for Matter

If your goal is specifically to add Matter devices to Google Home and control them at home, a Google Home Matter hub may be enough. Google’s current support pages list Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, Nest Wifi Pro and Google TV Streamer (4K) among devices with both Wi-Fi and Thread support. Google also lists Wi-Fi-only Matter hub options, so match the hub to the transport your devices use rather than assuming all Matter hubs support Thread. See Google’s Matter preparation guide for the supported-device details.

A Thread Matter device needs a Thread border router to join the network. Google also says IPv6 must be enabled on the home wireless network for Matter to work properly. These are practical prerequisites, not optional refinements: check them before troubleshooting a device that will not connect.

A Google Matter hub is not equivalent to a broader automation controller. Its role here is Google Home’s Matter setup and control; it does not establish broad protocol coverage or a general-purpose rule engine comparable to a dedicated platform.

Check these details before buying

  1. Inventory the devices you need. For each one, note whether it uses Matter over Wi-Fi, Matter over Thread, Zigbee, Z-Wave or a vendor cloud. Then check that the candidate hub or its supported integration covers that protocol.
  2. Decide what must keep working locally. If you only need in-home Matter commands through Google Home, start with a Google Matter hub. If you need broader automations to continue through an internet outage, look at Home Assistant or Hubitat and verify that the devices involved communicate locally.
  3. Check Thread and network requirements. For Matter devices using Thread, make sure the setup includes a Thread border router. For Google Home Matter setup, enable IPv6 on the home wireless network.
  4. Choose the Google Home integration path. Home Assistant identifies Home Assistant Cloud as an optional route to Google Home integration and remote access. Hubitat lists Google Home as a compatible service. In either case, compatibility does not establish that every command, automation or remote feature is cloud-free.
  5. Verify exact hardware and device support. Confirm the hub model, required radios or adapters, and the compatibility of the devices you already own. The setup effort depends on your devices and chosen integrations; the cited vendor pages do not provide a consistent independent comparison of difficulty or reliability.

How to decide

  • Choose Google Home Matter hub hardware when the job is controlling compatible Matter devices in Google Home and you have the required network and Thread support.
  • Choose Home Assistant Green when you want a flexible automation controller and are comfortable checking integrations and adding radio hardware where needed.
  • Choose Hubitat Elevation when you want a dedicated hub with built-in automation applications and a vendor-documented Google Home connection.
  • Use Google Home and a dedicated controller together when you want Google’s Matter role plus broader automation. Treat their connection as a separate integration to evaluate, not as proof that every part of the system operates locally.
