There is no single barbell weight-set total that suits every home lifter. Choose based on the loads you use now, the lifts you plan to do, room to progress, and whether the bar, plates, collars, and plate increments fit your training. Seller recommendations vary, so treat them as examples—not a universal prescription.
How much weight should you buy?
Two equipment sellers offer different starting points. Barbell Standard says beginners can start with a 90 lb set and suggests 250 or 270 lb for experienced lifters. It also says its 180 lb set provides 225 lb of weight when paired with one of its Olympic barbells. Iron Bull Strength Canada suggests 110–160 lb total for beginners and 200–260 lb for intermediate lifters. These are seller-specific recommendations, not an evidence-based standard for every trainee. Barbell Standard’s weight sets and Iron Bull Strength Canada’s barbell collection describe those figures.
The American College of Sports Medicine’s 2026 guidance does not prescribe a purchase total. It says to tailor load and volume to the person’s goal; for strength-focused training, its summary describes heavier loads around 80% of one-repetition maximum for 2–3 sets per exercise. ACSM also recommends training all major muscle groups at least two days a week and building gradually. Home routines, including bands and bodyweight exercise, can also be effective. See ACSM’s 2026 exercise guidance.
For a practical decision, start with the loads you currently use and the exercises you expect to perform. A modest set may suit someone beginning with lighter loads, while someone already lifting heavier on compound movements may need more weight or a straightforward way to add plates. There is no established timetable that predicts how much weight a beginner will need after a particular number of months.

What to check before buying a set
Total usable load and what the advertised total includes
Check whether the listed weight includes the bar, plates, and collars, or refers only to plates. The actual usable load depends on the bar and components included. Also check the bar’s load rating and whether you can expand the set with compatible plates if your needs change.
Plate sizes and increments
Look at the individual plate sizes, not just the total. Smaller plates let you make smaller increases between workouts or adjust loads more precisely for different exercises. Barbell Standard describes a 40 lb weight set as an option for adding small plates and making changes between exercises or bars; confirm the specific contents and compatibility on the product listing. Barbell Standard’s collection provides that seller’s description.

Plate, bar, and collar compatibility
Match the plate-hole diameter to the bar’s sleeves, and verify that the collars fit those sleeves and secure the plates. Iron Bull says its barbells work with standard 2-inch Olympic plates and describes its sets as including a bar, selected plates, and a pair of spring collars. Do not assume all kits use that standard: confirm the specifications of the exact set and any add-on plates before buying. Iron Bull Strength Canada’s collection states its compatibility details.
Bar type and intended training
Make sure the bar is intended for the exercises and training conditions you have in mind. A proprietary or lighter group-exercise bar is not interchangeable with every conventional Olympic bar. For example, Les Mills lists the SMARTBAR Gen 2 maximum load as 45 kg and advises users not to drop, throw, or drag it. Those restrictions apply to that product; check the instructions for the bar you buy. Les Mills SMARTBAR details show why equipment-specific guidance matters.

Space, storage, and cost
Plan where the bar and plates will be used and stored, and check the set’s dimensions against that space. There is no universal room-size minimum or budget established by the sources here; both depend on the specific equipment and your home. Compare the full set contents and the cost of any plates needed to expand it.
How to choose an Olympic barbell weight set
- Write down your current needs: Note the lifts you intend to do at home and the loads you currently use, rather than choosing a total based on a generic beginner or intermediate label.
- Compare complete set contents: Confirm the bar, plates, collars, advertised total, plate increments, and bar load rating. Check whether the stated weight includes the bar.
- Check standards and instructions: Verify plate-hole and sleeve compatibility, collar fit, and any limits on loading or handling.
- Assess the path to more weight: If you expect to need additional load, confirm compatible add-on plates are available and that the bar can handle the intended load.
- Make sure it fits your home: Check dimensions, storage needs, and total cost for the set and any likely additions.
If you are shopping for an Olympic barbell weight set, treat the category name as a starting point, not proof that a listing contains an Olympic bar or compatible plates. Validate the details on the exact listing; no particular retailer listing or current availability is established here.

What the evidence does—and does not—establish
ACSM says its 2026 position stand synthesized findings from 137 systematic reviews representing more than 30,000 participants. That broad training guidance helps explain how to program resistance exercise, but it does not establish an ideal barbell-set total for a home trainee. ACSM’s 2026 announcement quotes position-stand author Stuart M. Phillips, PhD, FACSM: “The best resistance training program is the one you’ll actually stick with.”
