The NFL divides games among national broadcast and streaming partners, while CBS and FOX carry Sunday-afternoon games assigned to local markets. The matchup you can watch depends on your location, the week, and the game’s broadcast window. Sunday Ticket is for eligible out-of-market Sunday-afternoon games—not every NFL game.
How NFL broadcast rights are organized
The NFL distributes games through a set of broadcast and streaming windows rather than giving one service every game. Long-term agreements announced by the league cover Amazon, CBS, ESPN/ABC, FOX, and NBC from the 2023 through the 2033 season. Those partners have different programming roles across broadcast television, cable or sports networks, and digital platforms.
The league also has scheduling flexibility, so a game’s announced slot can be subject to change. A platform carrying one NFL window does not necessarily carry other windows. Check the current NFL schedule and the game’s listing for the season and matchup you care about.
What “local market” means for Sunday-afternoon games
For Sunday-afternoon games, CBS and FOX are the local-market broadcast outlets. The NFL assigns matchups to stations serving particular areas, and the selection can differ by location and week. “Local” describes the broadcast assignment for your area; it does not simply mean the nearest team or the team you support.

That is why two viewers in different parts of the country may see different games on CBS or FOX at the same time. A favorite team can be outside your local selection even if its game is on one of those networks elsewhere.
Which viewing option fits the game?

What Sunday Ticket does—and does not—cover
Sunday Ticket is intended for eligible out-of-market Sunday-afternoon games. Local games remain available through the applicable local-broadcast route, subject to your market and service. The package is not a blanket pass to every NFL game: national primetime games and streaming-exclusive events may follow separate distribution arrangements.

NFL+ and other platforms are also subject to broadcast rights and blackout restrictions. The NFL distinguishes local games—those available on television in your local market—from out-of-market games assigned to another broadcast region. Check the specific game’s current platform rules rather than assuming a subscription overrides local distribution or blackout limits.
Can an antenna receive local NFL games?
Possibly. The FCC says over-the-air broadcast reception requires a digital television or a converter box together with an appropriate antenna. Its reception map can help you check stations by location, but the FCC cautions that indoor reception can vary significantly. Terrain, buildings, weather, and reception hardware all affect the signal, so a map result cannot guarantee reception inside a particular home.

An antenna is relevant for local broadcast affiliates, not for out-of-market Sunday Ticket games or streaming-only games. Check the FCC’s current reception map before buying equipment.

- Identify the matchup and week. Confirm the game you want to watch and when it is scheduled; the NFL’s schedule can change.
- Check the NFL’s location-aware schedule. Use the league’s team-schedule page with your location and available services to see the current local listing.
- Sort the game by window. A Sunday-afternoon local assignment points to CBS or FOX; a national or special-window game follows its own listed network or platform.
- If it is out of market, check eligibility. Sunday Ticket may cover an eligible Sunday-afternoon regular-season game, but it does not automatically include every national or streaming-exclusive game.
- For over-the-air viewing, check reception. Use the FCC map for your location, then account for the fact that actual reception depends on the home and antenna setup.
Why a team may not be on your local TV
- Your area has a different Sunday-afternoon assignment. Local CBS and FOX selections are made for the market and week, not solely according to fan preference.
- The game is outside your local market. A qualifying out-of-market Sunday-afternoon game may require Sunday Ticket.
- The matchup uses another window. National, primetime, and streaming-exclusive games may be on a different network or platform.
- Rights or blackout rules apply. Availability on NFL+ and other services can depend on the game and location.
- Your station signal is not receivable at home. Over-the-air reception varies, even within a station’s coverage area.
Rights agreements, weekly assignments, service packages, and blackout implementation can change. The NFL’s viewing guide and location-based schedule are the practical places to verify a specific game; for antenna reception, consult the FCC’s current map.
