Choose a participant verification tool by starting with the failure you need to prevent—not with a vendor’s “verified” label. Identity checks can help establish that a recruit is a real, unique person, but they do not prove that person meets your study criteria, has the expertise they claim, or will provide attentive, original responses. Compare the checks, when they happen, what evidence researchers see, and how the service handles a suspect recruit.
Define what you need to verify
“Participant verification” can mean several different controls. Write down your target participant and the risk that would most damage the study before comparing services.
- Identity and uniqueness: Is the person real, and are they appearing only once where that matters?
- Location and eligibility: Does the participant match the required geography, demographics, or other criteria?
- Expertise: Can the person demonstrate the professional knowledge or experience the study requires?
- Response integrity: Are responses copied, AI-generated, unusually fast, inattentive, or otherwise low effort?
- Remediation: What happens when a recruit is flagged or proves to be a poor fit—human review, replacement, an appeal, or something else?
- Privacy and workflow: What participant data reaches the researcher, what follow-up is permitted, and does the service support the study method and audience?
These controls address different risks. A verified identity is not a credential check, and a credential check does not establish that a participant paid attention during a session.
Compare the checks, not the “verified” label
Ask each provider which checks it performs and at what stage: at sign-up, during screening, before a session, or while research is underway. Then ask what signals researchers can see, whether a person reviews alerts, and what happens after a failed check. For any claimed accuracy, fraud rate, or detection improvement, request the definition, denominator, test conditions, and time period behind the figure.

| Service | Documented controls or signals | How to interpret the claims |
|---|---|---|
| Prolific | Its researcher documentation describes a third-party tool for checking that participants are unique and real, identity verification through Onfido (an Entrust company), IP validation and deduplication, periodic identity re-confirmation, profile updates, ongoing monitoring, in-study authenticity checks, and flags for unusually fast submissions. Prolific says its system uses more than 110 checks to monitor response quality and LLM use. It also provides attention and comprehension guidance and performance-based access controls. (Prolific quality controls; participant quality) | Prolific reports 98.7% accuracy for authenticity checks on AI-generated free-text responses on an undated page accessed in 2026. This is a vendor-reported detection claim, not an independently established cross-vendor benchmark. (Prolific AI detection) |
| Respondent | Respondent’s website describes sign-up checks using identity and device signals and work-email verification; study-level risk handling; ratings and activity history; video screening, verification badges, and flags for copy-paste or AI-written answers. It says managed recruits can have a human coordinator. (Respondent) | The site lists 4.3M+ participants, 150+ countries, 98% positive session ratings, and less than 1% reported fraud. These are Respondent’s own figures; the definitions and measurement methods are not established here for comparison with other vendors. |
| UserTesting | A September 17, 2025 press release describes UserTesting Verified as using AI, behavioral, and geolocation technology for checks before and during research, with human review of suspicious activity. (UserTesting Verified announcement) | The release says the system detects VPN use with 40% greater effectiveness. Treat this as a vendor claim: the release does not establish a general independent benchmark, and the baseline and test conditions should be requested. |
| User Interviews | Its panel page says new participants are evaluated against 50+ fraud signals and lists flagged copy-paste responses, activity and rating history, video screening, and verification badges as researcher-facing signals. (User Interviews panel) | The company’s 2024 panel report says fewer than 2% of sessions received negative researcher feedback for any reason. That broad measure is not a fraud rate. For specialist samples, test expertise directly
Identity verification cannot establish that a participant is an engineer, clinician, administrator, or other specialist with the experience your study needs. For a narrow professional sample, add a proportionate, task-oriented screener or other suitable evidence of expertise instead of relying only on self-reported credentials.

A 2024 research paper on online recruitment for software engineering studies recommends iterative prescreening, targeted questions about skills and professional engagement, AI detection, and qualitative or manual review of responses. It also discusses fair or generous compensation. These are study-design suggestions, not evidence that a particular commercial platform eliminates fraud. A practical selection process
- Write a participant definition and failure scenario. Specify the audience and whether your main concern is duplicates, location mismatch, false eligibility, unqualified expertise, copied or AI-assisted text, or low-effort participation.
- Map the workflow. Decide whether you need a panel with built-in checks, a broader research platform that sources participants, or extra qualification layered onto an existing source. Check that the service reaches your audience and supports your study method.
- Ask comparable questions. Get each vendor to explain the checks and their timing, the signals visible to researchers, human review, failure handling, data exposure, and any replacement or appeal process. Request definitions and evidence behind performance figures.
- Add study-specific qualification. If expertise matters, use relevant task-oriented screening or other evidence. Keep the burden proportionate to the study and compensate participants fairly for the work required.
- Review privacy and governance. Confirm permitted follow-up, data handling, and approval requirements before designing an identity-linked workflow.
- Pilot where feasible. In a small study, record false positives, missed problems, qualification yield, completion quality, and participant friction. Use those observations to adjust screening and controls; they are specific to your workflow, not a universal vendor ranking.
