You can reduce privacy risks when photographing in public by being thoughtful about who and what you capture, checking the image for identifying details, and controlling location data and the audience before sharing. Taking a photo and publishing it are separate decisions: laws vary by country, purpose, and setting, so “public” does not mean every photo is automatically lawful or respectful to take or post.
Before you take a photo: consider the people and place
Respect places where people expect privacy
Do not photograph people in public toilets, changing areas, or similar situations where they reasonably expect privacy. A public setting does not erase every privacy interest; Canada’s privacy commissioner notes that privacy concerns can remain in public spaces. Canadian guidance on body-worn cameras
Ask when someone is the subject
If you intend to make a person the focus of a portrait, explain what you are doing and ask permission. This is especially considerate for children, vulnerable people, close-up images, sensitive locations, or scenes that could embarrass someone. Swiss federal guidance recommends permission before taking or publishing a person’s image and written consent for commercial use. It treats incidental passersby differently from people who are the clear subject. Swiss Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner: Photos and privacy
Keep recording proportionate
Avoid prolonged targeting, intrusive zooming, or recording conversations unrelated to the picture. Video and livestreaming can capture more than a still image: voices, surrounding people, and other identifying details. If people are incidental to a scene or landmark, frame them that way where practical. Take extra care around shelter entrances, medical or reproductive-health facilities, home addresses, and school identifiers.

Before posting: inspect the image and its location clues
Review both what the image shows and what its file may contain. Check for faces, name badges, license plates, addresses, signs, school or workplace identifiers, and sensitive surroundings. A photo may reveal location in two ways:
- Metadata: location information may be embedded in the file, including coordinates supplied by the camera or added later.
- Visible clues: landmarks, street signs, distinctive interiors, and addresses can identify a place even after metadata is removed.
Metadata such as date, time, and location can become personal information when linked to an identifiable person. Google’s guidance likewise warns that hiding location information does not prevent someone from inferring a place from landmarks. Google Photos Help: Understand, find & edit your photos’ locations

How to remove or limit photo location data
On iPhone or iPad
Apple’s support guidance, published September 2026, documents these controls. Menu wording may change across software versions:
- Stop future camera location tagging: open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Camera and deny location access.
- Remove location from an existing photo: open the image in Photos and change its location to No Location.
- Omit location from a particular share: in Photos, tap Options before sharing and turn Location off.
When Camera has Location Services access, location metadata may be embedded in photos and videos; people who receive shared media may be able to access it. Apple’s guidance explains the available controls. Apple: Manage location metadata in Photos

Check the location-sharing setting for the specific album, link, or conversation you are using. Google says a photo’s location may come from the camera or be added or edited by a user; available controls depend on the sharing context. Its documentation says partner sharing includes location details, so review that setting separately if you use it. Even when location information is hidden, landmarks in the image can still give away the scene. Google Photos Help: Understand, find & edit your photos’ locations
Choose what to share and with whom
- Crop or obscure incidental people when doing so reduces unwanted identification without changing the image’s meaning. Blurring is not a substitute for permission or lawful handling when someone is the subject.
- Limit the audience when a photo does not need to be public. Once an image is publicly available, you have limited control over copying and reuse.
- Consider the purpose. Private sharing, public posting, editorial use, and commercial use may raise different expectations and legal questions. Avoid sensitive or humiliating contexts, and respond respectfully if someone asks you to remove a photo.
- Review the whole frame and file before sharing, not just the central subject. Location controls cannot remove identifying details visible in the picture itself.
The Philippines’ National Privacy Commission says that, under the country’s Data Privacy Act, processing or sharing photos and videos containing personal information requires a lawful basis and should follow transparency, legitimate-purpose, and proportionality principles. Can you take photos of people in public without consent?
There is no single worldwide answer. Capture and publication can be treated differently, and rules may depend on where you are, the setting, whether a person is incidental or the main subject, and what you plan to do with the image.
| Example of local guidance | What it says | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| New Zealand | New Zealand Police says it is generally lawful to photograph people in public without consent when there is no expectation of privacy, while warning against images made in private-expectation settings. | This is New Zealand guidance; it does not establish the rule elsewhere. New Zealand Police: What are the rules around taking photos or filming in a public place? |
| Switzerland | Federal guidance generally advises obtaining consent before publishing an image of a person unless an overriding public or private interest justifies publication; it distinguishes incidental passersby and recommends written consent for commercial use. | This is Swiss guidance, not a universal consent rule. Swiss Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner: Photos and privacy |
| Philippines | The National Privacy Commission says processing or sharing photos and videos containing personal information must have a lawful basis and follow data-protection principles. | This applies under Philippine law; the legal analysis elsewhere may differ. National Privacy Commission guidance |
Check the law and venue rules that apply to your location and intended use, particularly for commercial, journalistic, artistic, documentary, or child-related images. A venue may have its own restrictions, and legal permission to take a picture does not by itself settle whether publishing it is appropriate.
