If a delivery is late, search for the exact product near your location, check stock and pickup or delivery options on the retailer’s own site, and confirm urgent availability with the store before you travel. Compare the local option with your delayed order on timing, total cost, essential specifications and return terms before buying.
1. Decide what counts as an acceptable alternative
Before searching, note the exact product name and the requirements a replacement must meet. Depending on what you are buying, those may include the model, size, quantity, dimensions or compatibility with another device. Separate must-haves from preferences so a similar-looking listing does not lead you to the wrong version.
Keep the original order in view as you compare options. Check its revised delivery estimate and the seller’s current process for managing or cancelling it. Policies vary, so use the terms and order controls provided by that seller rather than assuming a local purchase automatically changes the online order.
2. Search for the exact item nearby
Search the product’s exact name with “near me” or your town or ZIP code. Where available, Google Shopping’s Nearby filter can show listings from nearby stores; Google’s guidance also describes local listings with store details and pickup information. Results depend on your location and the product, so treat them as leads rather than a guarantee of current stock. Google’s guide to shopping from local stores

Then check the retailer’s website or app directly. A broad search result may not identify the exact variant or reflect the store you can reach. Open the item page and select the actual store or enter your ZIP code or address before relying on the displayed availability.
3. Check stock and fulfillment at the selected store
Look for the exact item at the selected location and check which fulfillment methods are offered. Depending on the store, item and area, you may see in-store or curbside pickup, delivery from a local store, same-day delivery, ship-to-store or standard shipping. These choices are not available for every item or location.

- IKEA: Check availability for the selected store on the product page or in the app; you can also check other IKEA stores. IKEA says displayed stock status updates every few hours, rather than continuously. IKEA guidance on checking stock.
- Target: Same-day delivery eligibility can be checked by ZIP code or when items are added to the cart. Orders can be delayed by high volume or shopper availability. Target Same Day Delivery.
Check the displayed fee and promised timing during checkout, not just on a general delivery or store page. The available window can depend on local inventory and fulfillment capacity.
4. Confirm urgent stock before setting out
When timing matters, call the store and ask staff to verify the exact product and version. Google’s September 2020 Shopping guidance recommends calling to confirm inventory; it quoted Product Manager Swati Trehan advising shoppers to speak with someone if they are concerned an item might be out of stock by the time they arrive. A stock check is not the same as a reservation, so ask whether the store can hold the item if you need that assurance. Google’s local-shopping guidance

Google also offers an automated “Let Google call” feature for some nearby-store searches. It is limited: Google’s help page describes availability for signed-in customers using English queries in the US, with state exclusions and product-dependent coverage. Do not assume the feature is available for every search or location. Google Shopping Help: Ask Google to call nearby stores
Inventory displays can lag behind what is actually on the shelf. IKEA says its stock status updates every few hours, and fulfillment availability can change as inventory or delivery capacity changes. For a time-sensitive purchase, use the item page as a starting point and confirm with the store or retailer before making a trip.

5. Compare the local option with waiting
Once you have a real option, compare it with the delayed order rather than choosing on speed alone. Use the time you can actually expect to have the item—not just an estimate from a search result—and include all relevant costs and conditions.
| What to compare | What to check |
|---|---|
| Time to possession | Confirmed pickup time, local delivery window, ship-to-store estimate or the delayed order’s revised arrival date. |
| Availability confidence | Whether the exact variant appears at the selected location and, for an urgent need, whether store staff confirmed it. A listing alone does not guarantee stock. |
| Total cost | Item price plus any delivery or service fees, and the difference from the original order. |
| Suitability | Whether the alternative meets the essential model, size, quantity, dimensions or compatibility requirements you identified. |
| Returns and original order | The chosen seller’s current return terms and the original seller’s available order-management or cancellation options. |
If the alternative misses a non-negotiable requirement, a faster arrival may not make it a workable substitute. If you are considering cancelling the original order, check that seller’s current terms and the status of the order before acting.
