The GMKtec NucBox M8 is well suited to everyday desktop work, web use, documents, media, and a multi-monitor office setup. Its Ryzen 5 PRO 6650H and 16 GB of memory make it a capable compact general-purpose PC, but the memory is soldered and its Radeon 660M graphics are integrated. It is not a like-for-like substitute for a gaming tower or a workstation built for demanding 3D work and extended, complex 4K editing.

What kind of work can the GMKtec M8 handle?

For routine office work, the M8 is a credible alternative to a larger general-purpose desktop. That includes document editing, web browsing, web applications, email, video calls, and ordinary multitasking. TechRadar characterized its workflow performance as strong for straight office work and described the system as designed for office use. Those observations come from one review sample, not a guarantee for every application or workload.

GMKtec lists the M8 with an AMD Ryzen 5 PRO 6650H processor, with 6 cores, 12 threads, a 3.3 GHz base clock, and boost speeds up to 4.5 GHz. The listed graphics are integrated AMD Radeon 660M, and the system has 16 GB of onboard LPDDR5-6400 memory. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent benchmark results. GMKtec’s M8 specifications

Light creative work and casual gaming

Light editing can be practical, but the workload matters. TechRadar’s reviewer found standard phone-footage editing and some Lightroom and Photoshop work manageable, while reporting slower thumbnail rendering and limits with longer 4K editing projects. Treat that as one reviewer’s experience with a particular sample: app, codec, project size, settings, and software version can all change the result. TechRadar’s NucBox M8 review

Casual games may be workable with realistic settings, but demanding games are a different category. The Radeon 660M is integrated graphics, not a discrete gaming GPU. TechRadar reported that demanding games required reduced settings and could stutter. If high-end gaming is the main purpose, a desktop with a stronger discrete graphics card is a more suitable starting point.

What can’t the M8 replace well?

A gaming PC or GPU-heavy workstation

For demanding games, 3D creation, GPU rendering, and graphics-heavy production, the integrated Radeon 660M is the central limitation. TechRadar also reported that longer 4K Premiere Pro projects exposed the graphics bottleneck. A system with stronger discrete graphics is a better fit for these sustained, GPU-intensive workloads.

A system you can expand with more memory

The M8’s 16 GB RAM is onboard and non-upgradable, according to GMKtec. That fixed ceiling matters if you expect to run large creative projects, many demanding applications at once, virtual machines, or a heavier workload in the future. Adding storage does not increase RAM or graphics capability.

Can you upgrade storage?

Storage is more flexible than memory. GMKtec lists configurations with 512 GB or 1 TB and two M.2 2280 expansion slots, each specified for up to 8 TB. That 16 TB combined maximum is the manufacturer’s stated capacity, not a guarantee for every drive or configuration. GMKtec also says SATA SSDs are unsupported.

  • THREE BIOS POWER MODES + DUAL-FAN COOLING - Select the operating profile that matches your workload: Silent Mode at 28W, Balanced Mode at 35W, or Performance Mode at 40W. The M8 uses a dual-fan cooling architecture with dedicated CPU and system airflow, surrounding intake vents, and smart fan control to help manage heat during multitasking, creative applications, and gaming. BIOS-selectable profiles let you prioritize lower power operation or higher performance when needed.
  • TRIPLE-DISPLAY SUPPORT + HIGH-RESOLUTION OUTPUT - Run up to three displays simultaneously through HDMI 2.0, DisplayPort 1.4, and USB4. The specification lists up to 8K@60Hz support for the HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort outputs, while USB4 provides DisplayPort 1.4 video at up to 4K@60Hz. Create a multi-screen workspace for spreadsheets, research, meetings, content creation, monitoring, digital signage, or entertainment. Actual resolution depends on the display, cable, and output combination.

There is a specification nuance to check before buying a drive: GMKtec describes the slots as PCIe 4.0 x4, while TechRadar describes them as PCIe 3.0 slots that support PCIe 4.0 drives. Confirm the M.2 NVMe drive’s dimensions and compatibility with the exact M8 configuration before purchasing; do not assume a SATA M.2 drive will work. GMKtec’s product specifications · TechRadar’s review

How many monitors and network connections can it support?

The M8 has HDMI 2.0, DisplayPort 1.4, and USB4 with DisplayPort Alt Mode. GMKtec advertises triple-display output and up to 8K resolution; TechRadar specifies two displays up to 8K and a third up to 4K. These are not assurances that every port combination reaches those resolutions at every refresh rate. The displays, cables, adapters, refresh-rate targets, and port arrangement all matter, so check the intended setup before relying on a particular maximum.

Can an external GPU make it a gaming or creative workstation?

The M8 includes OCuLink PCIe Gen4 x4, which provides an external-GPU expansion route. TechRadar says an eGPU can materially raise graphics capability. It is not a simple built-in upgrade: you need a compatible enclosure and graphics card, additional space, and extra budget, and you should confirm compatibility, power, and cabling before choosing hardware.

Who should choose the M8?

Use case Fit Why
Office work, browsing, documents, and communications Good fit TechRadar found its workflow performance strong for straight office use.
Several displays and a compact desk Potentially good fit It has HDMI, DisplayPort, and USB4 video output; actual resolution and refresh rate depend on the setup.
Light editing and casual games Conditional fit One review found some lighter editing manageable, but reported limits in longer 4K editing and demanding games.
High-end gaming, 3D work, GPU rendering, or extended 4K production Poor fit without external graphics Integrated Radeon 660M graphics are the main constraint; an OCuLink eGPU adds equipment, expense, and setup complexity.
Workloads that may need more than 16 GB RAM Poor fit The onboard memory cannot be upgraded.

The practical choice is straightforward: pick the M8 for a compact office or general-use desktop, especially if multi-monitor output and wired networking matter. Choose a PC with discrete graphics and upgradeable memory for sustained graphics-heavy work. Consider the M8’s eGPU route only if you are comfortable adding and configuring external hardware.
