The right grill grate cleaner depends on the grate’s material and finish: identify both in your grill’s manual, then choose a product whose label names that surface. Cleaner directions are not interchangeable, and coated cast iron needs different care from bare cast iron.
Identify the grate material and finish first
Check the grill’s manual or contact its manufacturer before choosing a cleaner. Appearance alone may not tell you whether a grate is bare cast iron, porcelain-coated cast iron, stainless steel, or cast stainless steel.
Those distinctions affect care. Wolf, for example, describes its porcelain grates as cast iron with a matte black porcelain-coated finish; that is not the same surface as bare cast iron. [Wolf]
Match the cleaner to the grate
| Grate material or finish | What the cited manufacturer guidance supports | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Enameled or porcelain-coated cast iron | Napoleon lists its Grate Cleaner 10241 for enameled cast iron. It says to re-season cast iron after using the cleaner. Weber warns that sharp-edged tools can damage porcelain-enamelled grates. | Confirm the coating and its condition in your grill’s manual. Avoid tools or handling that could chip or scratch the enamel. |
| Stainless steel | Napoleon lists cleaner 10241 for stainless steel. Star brite names stainless steel among the surfaces for Instant Action BBQ Cleaner. | Use only a product whose label includes your surface, and follow the grill manual’s cleaning instructions. |
| Cast stainless steel | Napoleon lists cleaner 10241 for cast stainless steel. | This is a compatibility statement for that product, not evidence that every cleaner suits cast stainless steel. |
| Other or uncertain surface | No general compatibility is established for an unidentified grate. | Identify it from the model manual or manufacturer support before applying a cleaner. |
The cited product pages do not provide independent, side-by-side cleaning tests, so they do not establish which cleaner works best.

Compare cleaner directions before use
Check the product label for compatible materials, surface temperature, dwell time, scrubbing, rinsing, safety precautions, and any required post-cleaning care. The manufacturer instructions below illustrate why one cleaner’s procedure should not be transferred to another.
| Cleaner | Named grate materials | Directions and cautions stated by manufacturer |
|---|---|---|
| Napoleon Grate Cleaner 10241 | Enameled cast iron, stainless steel, and cast stainless steel | Spray, wait 2–3 minutes, rinse, and re-season cast iron. The cited product guidance does not state whether the surface must be cool. |
| Star brite Instant Action BBQ Cleaner, SKU 57732 | Stainless steel, cast iron, and porcelain grates | Use on a cool surface; leave for 10–30 minutes depending on soil, scrub, and rinse thoroughly. Star brite warns that the product is corrosive. |
These are manufacturer directions, not comparative test results. Read the current label for the product you have and the manual for your grill before cleaning.

Protect the grate and yourself while cleaning
- Let the grill cool as directed. Napoleon’s manual says to clean when the grill is cool. Star brite also specifies a cool surface for its cleaner.
- Use the specified protective equipment. Napoleon calls for protective gloves and safety glasses. Follow the cleaner label’s safety directions as well.
- Protect enamel. Avoid chipping or scratching porcelain enamel. Weber warns that sharp-edged tools can damage its porcelain-enamelled grates.
- Choose and inspect brushes carefully. Weber says its brushes are compatible with rust, stainless steel, cast iron, and porcelain-enamelled steel, recommends a long handle, and advises checking for loose bristles before each use. This is Weber’s guidance for its brushes, not a universal guarantee for every brush or grate.
- Do not assume oven cleaner is suitable. GrillGrate cautions against oven cleaner and harsh caustic cleaners on its products. Keep that advice tied to GrillGrate products and follow the instructions for your own grate.
GrillGrate also warns that prolonged exposure above 850°F can warp or melt its products. That warning applies to GrillGrate products, not all grill grates.

Post-cleaning instructions depend on the grate and product. Napoleon says to re-season cast iron after using its cleaner. Wolf says to season its porcelain grates before first use. Follow the instructions for your specific grill and do not extend either manufacturer’s direction to every grate.
