An old router or access point can slow Wi-Fi or cause dropouts when its wireless capabilities, processing capacity, radio condition, or firmware no longer meet the needs of your internet plan and connected devices. But age alone does not prove it is the problem: distance, walls, interference, a weak mesh link, a client device, the modem, cabling, or the ISP can produce similar symptoms. Compare wired and wireless connections before replacing hardware.

First determine whether the problem is Wi-Fi or the internet connection

Use the same device and, where possible, run comparisons close together in time. A wireless speed test by itself cannot distinguish an access-point problem from a modem or ISP issue.

  1. Compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection through the router. Connect a computer to the router with Ethernet and check whether it also runs slowly or loses service. If wired and wireless devices have the same problem, investigate the modem, the router’s connection to the modem, the ISP, or the Ethernet cable—not just the Wi-Fi radio. TP-Link’s slow-internet troubleshooting guide recommends checking the connection path, including the cable between modem and router.
  2. If practical, test directly through the modem. Connect a computer to the modem and compare the result with the router in place. If the same fault occurs without the router, the access point is unlikely to be the cause; contact your ISP or investigate the modem. Follow your ISP’s instructions for direct connection, since some services require a modem restart or other setup step.
  3. Compare Wi-Fi near the access point with Wi-Fi at the problem location. Use the same client device for both checks if possible. A much better result nearby points toward range, walls, placement, or a mesh node’s backhaul. Different client devices can have different Wi-Fi capabilities, so changing both the location and device makes the comparison less useful.

An Ethernet cable is useful for checking the wired path: TP-Link recommends trying a known-good cable, such as Cat6 or better, between modem and router. It will not resolve a problem limited to wireless interference or range.

Why an old access point may become a bottleneck

Its Wi-Fi generation or radio capabilities may not match your devices

Wi-Fi speed depends on both ends of the connection. The access point and client must support compatible capabilities, and actual performance also varies with distance, obstacles, band, and interference. A newer router cannot make an older client use a Wi-Fi standard it does not support. Google’s guidance notes, “Some devices do not support the faster Wi-Fi standards.” See Google Home and Nest’s Wi-Fi speed and performance guidance.

It may struggle with the current workload or have a stability fault

A router that once handled your devices and usage adequately may no longer keep up with the combination of your broadband service and connected clients. Hardware condition and model-specific firmware can also matter. The symptoms alone do not establish which limit applies; compare wired and wireless performance and check whether the fault persists near the access point before concluding the radio is failing.

Firmware support may have ended or an update may address instability

Firmware can address known reliability problems, but update availability depends on the model and hardware revision. Check the manufacturer’s support page for the exact revision before installing an update; do not assume firmware for a similar-looking model is interchangeable. TP-Link’s unstable Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance covers disconnects and model-specific checks.

Check placement, interference, and mesh backhaul

Improve the access point’s position

Place the router or access point in an open, elevated location, rather than inside a cabinet or behind large obstacles. Walls and other obstructions can weaken the signal, while nearby networks and electronics can contribute to interference. If the connection improves substantially when you test near the router, adjust placement or coverage before treating the router’s age as the explanation. TP-Link’s intermittent Wi-Fi guidance gives vendor signal-strength bands: -30 to -50 dBm is rated excellent, -51 to -60 good, -61 to -70 fair, -71 to -80 poor, and -81 or lower very weak. These are guidance values, not a guarantee that a particular app or device will perform well.

Check mesh nodes as well as client signal

A mesh node can show a strong signal to your phone while having a weak connection back to the main router. If your system reports backhaul quality, inspect it alongside the client’s signal. Relocating the node closer to the main unit may improve the path, though it can reduce coverage at the far end; placement is a balance between a usable backhaul and reach to the client.

Change radio settings one at a time

A crowded channel or interference may cause slowdowns or drops. A channel change can help, but the useful channel and channel width depend on the band, router, and local radio conditions. Change one setting at a time and compare results so you can identify whether it helped. Google’s slow-internet troubleshooting guidance and TP-Link’s router troubleshooting steps address connection and Wi-Fi checks.

When replacement is justified

Consider replacing the router or access point if it lacks capabilities your clients need, cannot sustain the workload, has no supported update path, or remains unreliable after you check placement and interference. There is no universal age at which a router must be replaced; the relevant question is whether it meets your requirements and works reliably.

  • Coverage: Match the system to your home’s layout and the locations where connections fail; a different placement or mesh system may matter more than peak advertised speed.
  • Wired path: Check that router ports support the speeds and connections your service requires.
  • Mesh options: If considering mesh, check whether nodes can use Ethernet backhaul where that suits your layout.
  • ISP requirements: Confirm the router is compatible with your service and modem arrangement.

If adding a Deco system alongside an existing router, TP-Link advises disabling the old router’s Wi-Fi to reduce wireless interference in that setup. The right configuration depends on the selected system and network topology; see TP-Link’s Deco guidance for using an existing router.

What the evidence does—and does not—show

Vendor support pages document common causes and troubleshooting steps, but they do not establish how often old routers are responsible for slow Wi-Fi or connection drops across all households. Treat age as a reason to check capabilities, support, and reliability—not as a diagnosis. The wired-versus-wireless and near-versus-far comparisons help narrow down the cause before you spend money on replacement equipment.
