Choose based on the access it needs, how narrowly you can limit that access, how it handles instructions hidden in emails or files, and whether you must approve consequential actions. For an agent connected to your inbox, documents, calendar, or payment tools, those controls matter more than a single overall safety score.
Start with the task, not the agent’s feature list
Write down what you want the agent to do, then identify the least access needed to do it. An agent that summarizes email needs to read messages; it may not need permission to send or delete them. Giving it extra capabilities increases what it can do if it misunderstands a request or follows hostile instructions. OWASP groups the underlying problem as excessive functionality, excessive permissions, and excessive autonomy (OWASP: Excessive Agency).
Compare services against the task you actually have. A tool that can browse public pages presents a different level of potential impact from one that can change files, send messages, publish content, or make purchases. Scale safeguards to the consequences of the actions you allow.
What to check before connecting an account
- Tool access: Which tools can the agent use—browser, email, files, calendar, or purchasing—and can you turn off individual tools it does not need?
- Permission scope: Can you choose read-only access, limit access to selected folders or accounts, or restrict it to your signed-in user? OWASP recommends limiting agents to the tools and permissions required for their specific tasks (OWASP AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet).
- Approval gates: Does the agent ask you before it sends, deletes, changes, purchases, or publishes something? Keep an independent review step for actions with meaningful consequences.
- Untrusted content: Could an email, document, or website affect what the agent does? Check whether the service explains how it handles instructions embedded in that content.
- Oversight and revocation: Can you inspect activity and revoke access? These controls help you monitor and stop activity, but their presence alone does not establish that an agent is safe.
- Evidence behind safety claims: Are claims tied to task-specific tests, and do they account for repeated attempts rather than one result?
Why emails, files, and websites can be a risk
Content an agent reads is not necessarily trustworthy. An attacker can put instructions in an ordinary-looking email, file, or webpage and try to make the agent treat them as directions. NIST calls this agent hijacking, a form of indirect prompt injection. Its technical staff explain: “Currently, many AI agents are vulnerable to agent hijacking, a type of indirect prompt injection in which an attacker inserts malicious instructions into data that may be ingested by an AI agent, causing it to take unintended, harmful actions.” (NIST CAISI, January 17, 2025; updated December 19, 2025).

That threat makes limited permissions and approval checkpoints especially important. If hostile content influences the agent, read-only access limits the damage compared with write access, while requiring your confirmation before a high-impact action can prevent an unintended change from happening automatically.
How to interpret agent-safety test results
A test result is evidence about a particular evaluation, not a general consumer risk rate or a permanent guarantee. In its 2025 agent-hijacking evaluation, NIST reported an 11% success rate for the strongest baseline attack and 81% for the strongest new attack developed for an upgraded Claude 3.5 Sonnet evaluation. Across five injection tasks, the reported average success was 57%, rising to 80% when each attack was attempted 25 times. These figures describe those tested attacks and conditions; they do not predict the risk of every agent or everyday use.

The practical lesson is to ask what was tested, for which task and system, and whether results include repeated attempts. NIST says task-specific analysis and repeated attempts can reveal risks that a single aggregate score may obscure. Its broader security and resilience work also describes this area as active research, with existing frameworks not yet comprehensively covering several attack classes or the full complexity of the attack surface (NIST: AI Research—Security and Resilience).
A practical selection process
- Define the job. Specify what the agent should read or do, such as summarize messages without sending replies.
- Identify the minimum access. List the accounts and tools needed. Prefer read-only access and selected folders or accounts when available.
- Check the approval points. Confirm that sending, deleting, changing, purchasing, or publishing requires your review when those actions are in scope.
- Review its handling of outside content. Look for clear information about how the agent treats instructions found in emails, files, and websites.
- Inspect oversight controls. Find out whether you can review activity and revoke connected-account access.
- Verify current details. Check the provider’s current official documentation and your own settings; do not assume a feature or permission option exists without confirming it.
- Reassess when the task changes. If you add tools or allow more autonomous actions, review the permissions and approval requirements again.
What this comparison can—and cannot—tell you
OWASP’s guidance offers useful selection criteria, and NIST’s work explains why indirect prompt injection and testing conditions matter. But the available evidence does not establish a current, comparable feature matrix for named consumer agents, a provider that is safest overall, or uniform privacy-retention terms. Compare specific agents using their current official documentation and settings rather than treating general security guidance as a product ranking. NIST’s work on agent identity and authorization is also evolving (NIST NCCoE Agentic AI Identity and Authorization Project Resource Hub).
