To turn off word suggestions while typing on a physical keyboard, open Start > Settings > Time & language > Typing and switch off Show text suggestions when typing on the physical keyboard. Turn it back on to restore suggestions. Windows has separate controls for autocorrect, multilingual suggestions, and the on-screen keyboard, so changing this switch does not necessarily affect those features.
Turn physical-keyboard text suggestions on or off
- Open Start > Settings. You can also press Windows logo key + I.
- Select Time & language > Typing.
- Find Show text suggestions when typing on the physical keyboard. Switch it Off to stop those suggestions or On to show them as you type.
Microsoft says suggestions may appear in places such as Teams chats, Word documents, and browser comments, but app and text-field behavior is not guaranteed to be identical. To dismiss a suggestion without choosing one, click outside the suggestions window or press Esc. See Microsoft’s text-suggestions instructions.
Choose the right setting for the behavior you want to change
Windows keeps several typing features separate. Check the control that matches what you see:

Microsoft’s Windows Settings catalog lists typing controls separately, including physical-keyboard suggestions, multilingual suggestions, autocorrect, and software-keyboard suggestions.

Turn off predictions on the On-Screen Keyboard
- Open Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and open the built-in On-Screen Keyboard.
- With the keyboard open, select Options.
- Clear Use Text Prediction to stop its predictions, or select it to enable them.
This is distinct from the physical-keyboard setting. Microsoft lists prediction support for English, French, Italian, German, and Spanish; language files may need to be installed for a language that is not already available. See Microsoft’s On-Screen Keyboard guide.
If suggestions or corrections continue
- Suggestions remain on the on-screen keyboard: Check Use Text Prediction in that keyboard’s Options panel; the physical-keyboard switch does not control it.
- Words change automatically: Review Autocorrect misspelled words under Settings > Time & language > Typing.
- You want to clear a personalized word list: Open Settings > Privacy & security > Inking & typing personalization and review Custom inking and typing word list. Microsoft says turning this privacy setting off clears the custom word list. This is separate from turning off popup suggestions. See Microsoft’s inking and typing privacy information.
- You mean actions shown after copying content: Review Settings > System > Clipboard for Suggested actions. See Microsoft’s Suggested actions guide.
- You are considering changing a language or keyboard layout: Those are managed separately under Settings > Time & language > Language & region. A layout changes which characters a key enters; it is not the documented text-suggestions control. See Microsoft’s language and keyboard-layout instructions.
These paths reflect Microsoft’s Windows 11 guidance available on October 4, 2026. Labels or locations may vary in localized Windows installations, older versions, or organization-managed devices.
