Archaeologists do not simply pick fragile shipwreck pottery up and wash it later. They first document where each piece lies and what it is associated with, decide whether removal is justified, and arrange specialist conservation before intervention. Because sediment may be holding a cracked object together, lifting requires a plan made for that find. After recovery, salt-bearing ceramics may need prolonged freshwater desalination before they can safely dry.

Why context comes before recovery

A ceramic pot or shard is both an object and evidence about a shipwreck. Its position, nearby cargo and relationship to other finds can help archaeologists interpret what the vessel carried and when it sailed. On the English China Wreck in Biscayne National Park, researchers considered ceramic types and decoration alongside ship dimensions and other objects; the vessel’s identity remained unresolved in the cited account. The National Park Service case study describes creamware, including tortoise-shell sponged wheildonware, salt-glazed stoneware and terracotta figurines.

Before disturbing a find, a project records its location and associations as part of the broader site documentation. This matters because excavation changes the site: once an object or surrounding material is moved, some information in its original arrangement may be lost. The UNESCO 2001 Convention Annex addresses project design, staff qualifications, excavation documentation, conservation and site management for underwater archaeological work.

Deciding whether to leave a ceramic in place

Recovery is an intervention, not an automatic response to fragility. Archaeologists weigh the research value of removal against the risk to the object, the condition of the site and whether the team can document and conserve what it takes out. Leaving a find in place may be more responsible when intervention would damage archaeological information or when suitable conservation capacity is unavailable.

Fragile finds also need an emergency plan if a site is threatened. UNESCO’s guidance on emergency preparedness and response places underwater cultural heritage within a framework for responsible management and conservation; it does not imply that every threatened or delicate object should be raised.

How archaeologists plan a safe lift

Plan the fieldwork and conservation together

Documentation, competent archaeological leadership and conservation arrangements need to be in place before an authorized recovery begins. In the United States, the Abandoned Shipwreck Act Guidelines describe conditions including underwater archaeologist leadership, a conservation laboratory, professional conservator oversight, minimally destructive methods and complete site documentation. Those are U.S.-specific guidelines, not a universal legal standard. The applicable permissions depend on the jurisdiction where the wreck lies.

Account for the support sediment provides

A ceramic may appear stable on the seabed because the surrounding soil matrix supports it. That support disappears as lifting begins, leaving fractures more vulnerable. Historic England’s Archaeology Recording Manual 2018 notes this issue for fragile finds, including fractured ceramics, and explains why lifting can be beneficial in some cases. It is general recording guidance, not a wreck-specific underwater lifting recipe.

There is no single support method that can be prescribed for every pot or shard on the basis of these sources. The object’s condition and the project conservator’s judgment determine how to support it during removal; an unsuitable approach could cause damage rather than prevent it.

Why recovered shipwreck ceramics may need to stay wet

Some ceramics absorb salt while submerged. If a salt-bearing object dries before those salts are removed, crystals can form and contribute to crumbling. In its English China Wreck account, the National Park Service describes successive freshwater baths to leach absorbed salts before drying. In that particular case, desalination took several months and could take years; the account does not establish a fixed timeframe for other objects.

The practical point is not that every recovered ceramic has the same salt burden or must follow an identical schedule. Conservators assess the material and its condition, then manage desalination and drying accordingly. Do not treat an unassessed salt-bearing ceramic like an ordinary household pot that can simply be left to air-dry.

What other shipwreck conservation examples show

Rooswijk: a broader post-excavation sequence

Historic England’s account of the Rooswijk Shipwreck post-excavation phase describes finds from the 2017 and 2018 fieldwork being assessed at specialist facilities, followed by desalination, drying and specialist treatment. Most materials received regular distilled-water washes, while iron and copper alloys needed different approaches. This illustrates the broader need to tailor conservation to material; it is not a ceramic-specific treatment protocol.

Nanhai No. 1: an exceptional whole-wreck lift

A UNESCO Courier account describes the Chinese merchant shipwreck Nanhai No. 1 being raised inside a purpose-built caisson after extensive preparation and transferred to a museum environment designed to maintain water conditions. It is an unusual, resource-intensive whole-wreck strategy, not a standard way to recover an individual pot or shard.

Who is authorized to recover shipwreck ceramics?

Shipwreck laws and permissions vary by location. In the United States, the National Park Service summarizes the Abandoned Shipwreck Act as establishing government ownership over most abandoned shipwrecks in U.S. rivers, lakes and seabed and protecting them from salvage. Its underwater archeology overview provides context for U.S. underwater archaeological work. These U.S. rules should not be generalized to wrecks in other countries, where different laws and authorities apply.

For a broader international reference, the UNESCO Convention Annex sets out principles for responsible underwater archaeological projects, including planning, qualified personnel, recording, conservation and site management. In practice, fragile ceramics should be recovered only through appropriately authorized archaeological work with documentation and conservation provision, not treated as collectible salvage.
