AT&T says phone accounts are canceled 60 days after expiration, while data-plan accounts are canceled after 365 days. These deadlines are separate from the expiration of money deposited into your account, which depends on the amount of the payment.
What happens when an AT&T PREPAID plan expires?
A monthly plan reaches its renewal date. If the account does not have enough money to cover the plan charge, service may be turned off or unavailable until the needed payment is made or the plan renews. AT&T’s consumer service agreement describes the service and cancellation terms; AT&T support also says service is turned off when a due payment is missed.
Missing a renewal does not mean the phone account is canceled immediately. AT&T’s agreement states that phone-plan accounts are canceled 60 days after expiration. For data-plan accounts, the stated cancellation interval is 365 days after expiration. During the time before cancellation, do not assume that phone service remains available.
Plan expiration and prepaid balance expiration are different
The plan’s renewal date determines when its charge is due. Separately, money deposited into the account has a validity period tied to the payment amount. AT&T’s agreement lists these periods:

| $10–$24 | 30 days |
| $25–$99 | 90 days |
| $100 or more | 365 days |
These are periods listed in AT&T’s consumer service agreement, surfaced in October 2026. The agreement says unused balance is forfeited when it expires. Adding money does not, by itself, restore a balance that has already expired or an account that has already been canceled.
How long do you have to renew AT&T PREPAID?
For a phone account, AT&T states a 60-day cancellation interval after expiration. AT&T support says the number is reassigned after 60 days if the customer does not pay. For a data-plan account, the agreement gives a 365-day interval. Because account status and applicable terms can matter, check your account or contact AT&T rather than relying on the full interval as guaranteed service time.

What to do if your plan payment is missed
- Sign in to your AT&T PREPAID account. Check the plan, balance, and account status. AT&T’s account-management instructions cover balance checks, refills, plan changes, and AutoPay.
- Pay or refill if the account is still eligible. Make the payment needed for the plan or refill the account, as appropriate to its status.
- Check AutoPay timing. AT&T says AutoPay processes one day before the monthly plan due date, and one day before balance expiration for non-monthly plans. This timing does not guarantee service if the payment fails or the account is otherwise ineligible.
- Contact AT&T if the account is canceled or the status is unclear. AT&T’s agreement says reactivating a canceled phone account requires a new wireless phone number. Verify the status of your specific account with AT&T.
What if your situation is unusual?
The stated timeframes may not settle cases involving a promotion, a multi-line account, a payment dispute, or an account that is already canceled. Check the terms attached to your account and ask AT&T to confirm the applicable status and options.
