First identify which problem you have: a detachable drive that will not pair, a disc the console will not read, or a disc that will not eject. For a detachable drive, check the PS5 model group and installation before retrying setup. For a reading problem, check disc orientation and condition, then test another supported disc. These are separate symptoms and do not, by themselves, prove the drive is faulty.
If the detachable disc drive will not pair
Confirm that your PS5 model is compatible
Sony says its detachable Disc Drive, model CFI-ZDD1, is compatible only with PS5 CFI-2000/7000 model groups. It is not an add-on for every PS5. Check the model information for your console before attempting setup. Sony also says an internet connection is required to pair the drive and console during setup. PlayStation’s setup instructions do not give a separate network-error diagnostic flow, so connectivity is a requirement to check—not proof that a connection issue is the cause of every pairing failure.
Check the physical installation safely
If the model is compatible, verify the attachment using Sony’s installation sequence. Turn the console off, unplug the AC power cord and other cables, and let it cool before removing covers or attaching the drive. Place it on a soft cloth on a flat surface. Remove the specified cover and short horizontal feet, align the drive clips with the two indicated holes, and press until the drive clicks into place. Fit the supplied circle cover and long feet, reconnect the cables, and turn on the console. Follow Sony’s model-specific illustrations at the setup page.
Do not open the drive or touch the drive or console connector terminals; the CFI-ZDD1 instruction manual warns against touching the terminals. Once installation is confirmed, try setup again with the console connected to the internet. If it still will not pair, contact PlayStation Support for help with your model; Sony’s reviewed setup instructions do not document additional user-level pairing fixes.

If the PS5 accepts a disc but will not read it
Check insertion direction and disc condition
- Check orientation. With the console vertical on its stand, the disc’s labeled side should face left as you insert it. If you are unsure of the orientation for your console’s position, consult Sony’s disc-troubleshooting instructions.
- Clean the disc. Wipe dirt or fingerprints with a soft, clean cloth. Check for smudges or scratches, then reinsert the disc.
- Try another supported disc. Test another game, Blu-ray disc, or DVD. PS5 consoles cannot play burned discs or audio CDs, so those are not suitable test discs.
Sony’s guidance for error CE-110538-8 also recommends checking the disc for fingerprints, smudges, or scratches and testing another disc. If only one disc fails, its condition or format remains relevant; if multiple supported discs fail, continue with the console software steps. Neither result alone confirms a hardware diagnosis.
Try Sony’s Safe Mode steps before considering a reset
Sony lists Clear Cache and Rebuild Database in Safe Mode for disc-reading problems. Follow the current instructions on its disc troubleshooting page to enter Safe Mode and select those options. If rebuilding the database does not resolve the issue, Sony’s page lists Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) as a further step.

Important: Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) deletes all information on the console. Do not select it casually. Read Sony’s disc troubleshooting guidance and the linked system-software reinstallation instructions first, and make sure you understand the consequences for your console data.
Know when to contact PlayStation Repairs
If the console still will not read supported discs after Sony’s steps, contact PlayStation Repairs. Sony gives the same escalation for an unresolved CE-110538-8 issue through its error-code guidance.

If a disc is stuck or will not eject
Do not pull the disc out forcibly. Sony’s manual removal procedure requires the console to be turned off and disconnected, a well-lit work area, and a #1 Phillips or cross-hatch screwdriver. Follow the current instructions on Sony’s disc troubleshooting page carefully; Sony warns not to turn on or play on the console with the cover off. If you are unsure about the procedure or the disc remains stuck, stop and contact PlayStation Repairs.

Choose the right troubleshooting path
