Yes. You can start Gemini in Android Auto by voice—say “Hey Google,” tap the microphone on the car display, or press and hold your vehicle’s steering-wheel voice button if it has one. Voice control can help you avoid looking at the screen to begin supported tasks, but it does not make every interaction safe to handle while driving. Google warns that Gemini can give inaccurate answers and should not be relied on for critical or safety-related information behind the wheel.
How to start Gemini by voice
Use whichever voice method your Android Auto setup supports:
- Wake phrase: Say “Hey Google.” This works only if Voice Match and the wake phrase are enabled.
- Display microphone: Tap the microphone on the car display, then speak your request.
- Steering-wheel button: If your vehicle has a voice-command button, press and hold it until you hear the tone, then speak.
You do not need a steering-wheel button if another voice route is available. Button availability and controls depend on the vehicle.
What Gemini can do in Android Auto
Google says Gemini can help with common tasks such as placing calls, sending texts, finding places and starting navigation, controlling music, and having a conversation. For directions, say “Hey Google” or select the microphone and state a destination or navigation request.

For messaging, Android Auto supports dictating and reviewing messages by voice, and asking Gemini to read messages. Prefer these voice options instead of interacting with the display while the vehicle is moving. Typing a destination on the car display requires the vehicle to be in Park.

Voice access can reduce the need to look at the display to start a supported task, but it is not a guarantee that every task or response is safe to use while driving. Android Auto restricts some interactions while moving, including typing messages and scrolling through large lists. Follow road rules and your vehicle’s instructions, start tasks by voice when appropriate, and avoid relying on Gemini for critical or safety-related decisions.

Google’s Gemini Apps Help page says: “Gemini in Android Auto is new and evolving, and can hallucinate and present inaccurate information as factual so should not be relied on for critical information or safety-related matters while operating the vehicle.”
