Write an AI video prompt like a compact directing brief: specify the framing and camera movement, the subject and one visible action, the setting, then the lighting and a few supporting details. Keep the instructions concrete and consistent. There is no universal ideal prompt length, and adding more detail does not guarantee the model will follow it.

Build a prompt in the order the shot is seen

A useful starting structure is camera and framing + subject and action + environment + supporting details. It is a flexible aid, not a required syntax. For a short clip, give the generator one main action and a clear camera instruction; separate camera motion from movement by the subject.

1. Choose the framing and camera movement

Name the view, such as a wide establishing shot, medium shot, close-up, or low angle. Then say whether the camera is locked, handheld, panning, tilting, dollying, or tracking. When the move matters, include its direction and pace in ordinary language: “slowly tracks left alongside the runner” is more specific than “cinematic camera.” Runway’s [Gen-4 prompting guide](https://help.runwayml.com/hc/en-us/articles/379728 esencia) distinguishes camera motion from subject and scene motion; OpenAI’s Sora 2 prompting guide also illustrates explicit shot and camera descriptions.

2. Give the subject one visible action

Identify the subject with a few distinctive details if they affect what should appear on screen, then describe one plausible action. Include useful beats or counts: “takes four steps, pauses, then pulls the curtain” gives the action a clearer sequence than “walks across the room.” OpenAI recommends keeping movement simple, with one clear camera move and one clear subject action as a starting point.

3. Establish a specific environment

Name the location and add only background details that change the shot: textures, weather, atmosphere, or a few important objects. Google DeepMind’s Veo 3 prompt guide recommends describing the location, action, character, and style. Avoid adding unrelated events or details that compete with the main action; Runway likewise recommends clarity over excessive or conflicting instructions.

4. Describe lighting by source and quality

Say whether the light is soft or hard, diffuse or directional, and where it comes from. Add a small set of color anchors if they matter to the intended look or continuity. For example: “soft window light with a warm lamp fill and a cool edge from the hallway; amber, cream, walnut brown.” OpenAI’s guide recommends describing light quality and color anchors, and notes that consistent lighting logic can help connected shots feel coherent.

5. Add style or sound only if the shot needs it

A broad style cue—such as documentary handheld, stop-motion, or film noir—can help orient the result. Sound is another optional dimension: Veo 3 supports dialogue, and its guide invites explicit sound cues. Leave out style or sound instructions when they distract from the visual action you are trying to control.

Example: a compact prompt with clear priorities

Medium close-up, eye-level, locked camera. A tired night-shift baker sets a tray of rolls on a steel counter and pauses. In a small bakery before dawn, flour hangs faintly in the air and rain beads on the dark window. Soft overhead practical light with a warm amber pool on the counter and cool blue window light; restrained documentary look.

This is an illustrative example, not a tested prompt or a vendor-provided result. It uses one camera setup, one action, and lighting with named sources. If a generated clip misses the framing or light, revise the phrase for that element rather than adding unrelated story details.

Adapt the prompt to text-to-video or image-to-video

Workflow What to describe Useful consideration
Text-to-video Establish both the visual scene and its motion: framing, camera move, subject, action, setting, and light. Runway describes this workflow as useful when exact scene consistency is not the priority and says it can handle complex motion sequences more readily than image-to-video. That is not a guarantee of exact motion.
Image-to-video Focus the text prompt on what should move and how; the input image already anchors much of the composition, subject, lighting, or style. Runway advises describing motion instead of repeating what is already visible. Google’s Veo 3.1 documentation also describes using images as references or first frames.

For the model-specific details, see Runway’s current text-to-video guide, its [Gen-4 guide](https://help.runwayml.com/hc/en-us/articles/379728 esencia), and Google’s Veo 3.1 developer documentation. The guides cover different model versions and workflows, so check the documentation for the generator you are using.

Plan multi-clip sequences and timed actions

Separate distinct shots

For a sequence, write a distinct prompt block for each shot instead of asking one prompt to handle several unrelated setups. Reuse character descriptions, lighting logic, and palette where continuity matters. OpenAI recommends separating shot blocks and repeating relevant phrasing; reference images can also help anchor continuity, but neither approach guarantees identical results between clips.

Use timestamps as guidance, not exact control

If an action has several beats, timestamps can suggest their order—for example, what happens at the start and later in the clip. Pair the timestamps with plain-language descriptions and allow realistic time for each action. Runway says timestamping can guide general sequence and timing, but may not be perfectly precise.

Refine a prompt by fixing the missed instruction

  1. Inspect the clip against the brief. Identify the specific miss: framing, camera move, subject action, setting, or light.
  2. Clarify that instruction. If the view is too wide, name the intended close-up; if the camera should track, state the direction and what it follows. If the lighting is wrong, make its source or quality explicit.
  3. Keep the other instructions stable. Avoid changing the action, style, setting, and camera all at once when only one element needs correction.
  4. Generate again and compare. Treat iteration as part of the workflow, not proof that the first prompt was badly written. Runway and OpenAI both describe prompt refinement as useful; exact compliance is not assured.

Why shorter, clearer prompts are often a better starting point

More detail can provide more control, but excessive or contradictory instructions can make the intended shot harder to follow. Runway says there is no ideal prompt length and prioritizes clarity over word count. OpenAI cautions that longer detail can restrict creative latitude without ensuring reliable compliance. Start with the few details that define the shot, then add only what the output shows is missing.

These recommendations reflect vendor-authored guidance rather than a controlled comparison of generators. Runway’s current text-to-video guide is optimized for Gen-4.5; the other cited guides address Veo 3, Veo 3.1, and Sora 2. Product controls and model behavior can change, so use the current documentation for the specific version you have selected.
