To insert a microSD card, power off your Lenovo tablet, release its card tray with a pin or ejector tool, seat the card according to the tray markings, and reinsert the tray. After turning the tablet on, choose how Android should use the card. Back up any files on it before formatting: Google Android Help warns that formatting permanently deletes the card’s data.

Check your Lenovo tablet’s microSD support first

Card compatibility is model-specific. Before buying a card, consult the official guide for your exact Lenovo tablet to confirm that it supports microSD and to find its capacity and speed limits. Those specifications—and the storage options Android offers—cannot be determined for Lenovo tablets as a group.

How to insert a microSD card

  1. Power off the tablet. Lenovo’s general tablet FAQ advises turning the device off before inserting or removing a card.
  2. Release the tray. Use a pin or ejector tool in the tray’s release hole. The tray design and location vary by model.
  3. Seat the card. Place the microSD card in the tray, following the orientation shown on the tray or in your tablet’s guide. Do not force it.
  4. Reinsert the tray and turn on the tablet.

Choose how Android should use the card

After startup, Android may show an SD-card-detected notification. Tap it to begin setup. If you dismiss the notification or it does not appear, look under Settings > Storage; menu names and available choices vary by Lenovo model and Android version. Google explains the general setup choices in its Android Help guide to using an SD card.

Mode Best for What to know
Portable storage Photos, videos, and other files you may want to move between devices Apps cannot be installed on the card in this mode.
Internal or adoptable storage Using the card as part of the tablet’s storage, including for apps The card is dedicated to that tablet and cannot be transferred between devices in this mode.

Not every Lenovo tablet offers both modes. If you expect to remove the card and use it elsewhere, portable storage is the relevant choice. If you want app storage and your tablet offers internal/adoptable storage, understand that the card will not be transferable between devices in that mode.

Format the microSD card without losing files

Formatting prepares a card for its selected use, but it erases what is already on the card. Google Android Help states: “If you format your SD card, data will be permanently deleted.” Copy any files you want to keep to another location before confirming a format. Then follow the on-screen setup prompts for the mode you chose. Exact menu labels and available formatting options depend on the tablet and Android version.
