Call event.stopPropagation() in the nested control’s click handler to keep that click from reaching the accordion’s parent handler. This stops propagation; it does not cancel browser defaults such as link navigation.
Why a nested click triggers the accordion
DOM click events normally bubble from the clicked element through its ancestors. If a button inside an accordion is clicked, its handler runs and the event can then reach the accordion’s handler, toggling it too. MDN explains event bubbling, and React documents the same child-to-parent behavior.
Stop propagation in a plain JavaScript handler
Use the event object passed to the child’s listener and stop propagation before running the child action:
const child = document.querySelector(".accordion__inner-action");
child.addEventListener("click", (event) => {
event.stopPropagation();
performInnerAction();
});
Place the call on the nested control whose click should not toggle the accordion. The ancestor handler will not receive that event as it continues bubbling.

Stop propagation in React
In React, call e.stopPropagation() from the nested element’s onClick handler:
function InnerAction({ onAction }) {
return (
<button
onClick={(event) => {
event.stopPropagation();
onAction();
}}
>
Do action
</button>
);
}
React’s event guide describes this nested-button pattern and notes that the parent handler will not run after the child stops propagation. React’s event object exposes values aligned with the React tree; reason about the documented handler behavior and component tree rather than relying on assumptions about React’s internal listener placement. See React’s common DOM components reference.

Choose between stopping propagation and an explicit callback
| Approach | Use it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Stop propagation in the child | The nested action should be independent and must not activate the accordion’s ancestor handler. | It is a direct local fix, but applying it indiscriminately can hide broader coupling between interactions. |
| Pass and call an explicit handler | The parent should deliberately provide behavior to the child and you want that relationship to be explicit. | The interaction flow is clearer than relying on implicit event propagation; decide separately which other clicks in the accordion content should reach the parent. |
React’s guide presents explicit callback invocation as an alternative when coordinating child and parent actions makes implicit propagation difficult to follow.
Use the right event API
Use stopPropagation() for ancestor handlers
stopPropagation() prevents the event from continuing along its propagation path. It does not prevent the browser’s default action, such as following a link or submitting a form. See MDN’s stopPropagation reference.

Use preventDefault() for browser defaults
preventDefault() cancels a default browser action; it does not by itself stop the event from reaching ancestor handlers. If both the browser default and the parent handler are unwanted, handle each behavior for its own reason. See MDN’s preventDefault reference.
Use stopImmediatePropagation() only for same-element listeners
stopPropagation() does not prevent other listeners on the same element from running. If the unwanted handler is another listener on that very element, stopImmediatePropagation() also suppresses remaining listeners there while stopping further propagation. It is stronger, so use it only when that is the event behavior you intend. See MDN’s DOM events reference.

Trace the event if the accordion still toggles
- Check the target and current target.
targetis the originating node;currentTargetis the node whose handler is executing. - Check capture versus bubbling. Capture handlers run on the route toward the target, before the target’s bubble handler. Stopping propagation in the child’s bubble handler cannot undo a capture handler that already ran.
- Confirm the handler path. Identify which element receives the click and which handler toggles the accordion. An accordion package may use its own event strategy, but behavior cannot be assumed without knowing the implementation.
For DOM propagation details, see MDN’s event bubbling guide.
