You can connect two 4K 120Hz monitors through one USB4 dock only if the laptop, dock, operating system, monitors, and cables all support that exact setup. USB4 by itself does not guarantee dual 4K at 120Hz. For example, Plugable requires a compatible Windows 11 laptop with DisplayPort 1.4 HBR3 and DSC for its dual-display configuration; its dock uses DisplayPort MST.

Check whether your laptop can drive both displays

Start with the exact laptop model, not just the USB4 logo beside a port. Check the manufacturer’s specifications or support documentation for the port’s video capabilities, supported DisplayPort version, HBR3 bandwidth, Display Stream Compression (DSC), and maximum number of external displays. If these details are unclear, ask the laptop manufacturer to confirm them for your model.

USB4 does not mean every laptop implements the same display modes. Plugable says its UD-4VPD can support two 4K 120Hz displays with compatible Windows 11 notebooks that have USB4 or Thunderbolt 4 and support DisplayPort 1.4 with HBR3 and DSC. Those are specific compatibility conditions, not a general guarantee for USB4 laptops. See Plugable’s support documentation, updated July 11, 2025.

Also check the laptop GPU’s limit for the total number of external displays. DisplayPort Multi-Stream Transport (MST) can split a DisplayPort connection into multiple display streams, but it does not raise the GPU’s display limit.

Choose a dock rated for two simultaneous 4K 120Hz displays

Look for an explicit specification for two simultaneous displays at 3840×2160 and 120Hz, and confirm that it applies to your laptop’s operating system and connection type. A dual 4K 60Hz rating or a single 4K 120Hz claim is not equivalent.

Dock Published display capability Important qualification
Plugable UD-4VPD Up to two 4K 120Hz displays Plugable specifies compatible Windows 11 notebooks with USB4 or Thunderbolt 4, DisplayPort 1.4 HBR3, and DSC. It uses MST.
StarTech 155NA Dual 4K 120Hz or single 8K 60Hz StarTech lists two HDMI 2.1 video outputs. Confirm host compatibility in the full product documentation.
Microsoft Surface USB4 Dock Dual 4K 60Hz This is the dock’s published maximum; it is not a dual 4K 120Hz specification.
Razer USB 4 Dock 4K 120Hz primary display plus a secondary monitor The published wording does not establish that both displays can run at 4K 120Hz.

These are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent verification of every laptop-and-monitor combination. Check the full documentation for your exact host, operating system, and intended display mode. Sources: Plugable, StarTech, Microsoft, and Razer.

Plugable USB-C Docking Station, Dual 4K 60Hz HDMI for Windows and ChromeOS
  • One Cable Desk Setup: Turn your laptop into a full workstation with one connection, run two HDMI monitors (up to 4K 60Hz each on supported systems) and keep your desk setup ready for multitasking, spreadsheets, and video calls. Monitor resolution and refresh rate depend on your host system’s capabilities (dual 4K 60Hz requires a host that supports higher-end display output).
  • Compatibility Checklist: Designed for Windows 10+ / USB4 / Chromebook systems that support DP Alt Mode + MST. Not recommended for macOS if you need dual extended displays (Mac will be limited to one external monitor).
  • Easy Setup, No Drivers: True plug-and-play, no software installation required on supported systems. Just connect power, plug into your laptop, and attach your monitors and accessories. Host must support USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode (DP Alt Mode) for video output (not all USB-C ports support video).
  • 10-in-1 Connectivity for a Ready to Go Workstation: Connect your everyday desk essential – keyboard/mouse, external storage, Ethernet, and a headset for calls through one dock. Includes 1x USB-C (5Gbps), 2x USB-A 3.0 (5Gbps), 1x USB-A 2.0 (480Mbps), Gigabit Ethernet, and audio in/out, plus a secure K-Lock slot for office environments.
  • What’s Included + Lifetime Support: In the box you’ll get the UD-MSTH2 dock, 110W power adapter, 1m USB-C host cable, and a Quick Start Guide for fast setup. Backed by Plugable’s lifetime support from our North American team of connectivity experts.

Check the operating system and display path

For MST docks, operating-system support matters as much as the port and dock specifications. Plugable says macOS does not support multiple independent extended displays from a single MST connection. With the UD-4VPD, Plugable says two connected displays on Apple Silicon Macs mirror rather than act as separate extended desktops. If you need independent displays on a Mac, verify a suitable display path for your precise Mac and dock before buying.

Confirm how many displays the laptop can drive, whether the dock uses MST or another display method, and whether the operating system supports the required arrangement. A dock’s maximum display figure cannot override a host GPU limit or an operating-system restriction.

Plugable USB C Docking Station, Dual Monitor 4K 60Hz 2X HDMI or DisplayPort
  • 14-in-1 Dock for Mac: Premium aluminum housing with space gray finish; supports 2x 4K monitors in HDMI, DisplayPort or both, front-facing USB-C and USB port for charging, 3 additional USB 3.0 ports, SD and microSD card readers, 3.5mm headset jack, Ethernet, and 100W charging

  • Work around Mac Display Limits: Some Macs only support a single extended monitor. Named the Best DisplayLink Dock for MacBook by Macworld, this USB-C dock uses DisplayLink technology to circumvent display limitations. It’s an ideal solution for multitaskers and M1/M2/M3/M4/M5/Neo MacBook, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro users
  • Ideal for Office and Hybrid Work Setups: Compatible with macOS 11+, Windows 10+, and ChromeOS 100+ on supported Thunderbolt, USB4, or USB-C systems. Requires driver installation for full functionality. HDCP not supported

Match the dock outputs, monitor inputs, and cables

Check each dock output against the input on the monitor you plan to use, then select cables that match both ends and the required display mode. StarTech lists two HDMI 2.1 outputs on the 155NA; that does not establish a universal cable choice for other docks or monitors. Consult the dock and monitor manuals for supported inputs and modes.

If the dock will replace your laptop charger, compare its charging output with the laptop’s power requirements. StarTech advertises 100W charging for the 155NA, while Microsoft lists 65W passthrough for the Surface USB4 Dock. Those figures apply to the named docks; verify that the available power is suitable for your particular laptop.

Connect and configure the displays

  1. Confirm the laptop’s exact USB4 port supports the required DisplayPort video capabilities, including DP version, HBR3, DSC where required, and enough external displays.
  2. Choose a dock whose documentation explicitly specifies two simultaneous 3840×2160 displays at 120Hz for your host platform. Do not infer this from USB4 branding, a single-display 4K 120Hz claim, or a dual 4K 60Hz rating.
  3. Connect the dock to the specified USB4 port on the laptop.
  4. Connect each monitor to a dock video output with a cable that matches the dock output and monitor input.
  5. In the operating system’s display settings, select an extended-display arrangement and set each monitor to 3840×2160 at 120Hz. Check the reported resolution and refresh rate for both displays.

These configuration steps do not guarantee that every hardware combination will offer the target mode; that depends on the specific devices and their documented capabilities.
