Start by identifying which layer is failing: Claude Code’s interface theme, your terminal’s own colors, Claude Code’s text renderer, or a chart-like visual in a Claude conversation. Use /theme or /config for Claude Code’s palette; change the terminal profile for colors across terminal apps; and use the fullscreen repaint steps only for stale or misplaced text. Anthropic documents generated chat visuals for Claude web and desktop, not as a chart-rendering feature of the Claude Code terminal.
First identify what is missing or broken
“Theme” and “chart” can refer to different product features. Match the symptom to the surface before changing settings:
| Symptom | What to check |
|---|---|
| Claude Code is hard to read, but other terminal text looks normal | Claude Code’s interface theme |
| Colors look wrong in Claude Code and other terminal programs | Your terminal application’s color profile |
| Text is stale, misplaced, or partly obscured in fullscreen mode | The Claude Code renderer and terminal redraw behavior |
| A custom theme is absent from the picker | The theme file location, JSON, and whether the themes folder existed at startup |
| A requested chart does not appear | Whether you are using Claude web or desktop, or Claude Code in a terminal |
Fix Claude Code theme colors and contrast
In Claude Code, run /theme to select a theme, or open /config to choose one there. The auto option detects whether the terminal background is light or dark and follows operating-system appearance changes.
Claude Code’s theme changes its own interface appearance; it does not change the terminal application’s color scheme. Anthropic’s Claude Code terminal configuration guide states: “Claude Code does not control the terminal’s own color scheme, which is set by the terminal application.” If ordinary terminal text also has poor contrast, adjust the terminal profile rather than expecting /theme to fix every program.

Make a custom theme appear in the picker
Custom theme JSON files belong in ~/.claude/themes/. Claude Code’s picker can list custom themes as well as themes supplied by installed plugins. A custom theme can specify name, base, and overrides. Supported base presets are dark, light, dark-daltonized, light-daltonized, dark-ansi, and light-ansi. The documented color formats include #rrggbb, #rgb, rgb(r,g,b), ansi256(n), and ansi:<name>. See Anthropic’s terminal configuration documentation for the current theme details.
- Confirm the file is in
~/.claude/themes/and contains valid JSON with the intended theme name, base, and overrides. - Check that override keys are documented theme tokens and color values use a supported format. Unknown tokens and invalid color values are ignored, so a typo may prevent an override from taking effect without breaking the renderer.
- Open
/themeand select the custom theme; placing a file in the folder does not itself select it. - If this is the first theme file and the themes folder did not exist when Claude Code started, restart Claude Code once. After that, Claude Code watches the folder for changes, so later edits reload without a restart.
Repair stale or misplaced text in fullscreen mode
Stale or misplaced text on screen is a renderer/redraw symptom, not necessarily a bad theme. Anthropic’s fullscreen mode guide explains that some terminals—most commonly Windows Terminal and other ConPTY-backed hosts—can leave stale fragments when positioned writes are coalesced incorrectly.

- 100HZ FAST REFRESH RATE: 100Hz brings your favorite movies and video games to life. Stream, binge, and play effortlessly
- SMOOTH ACTION WITH ADAPTIVE-SYNC: Adaptive-Sync technology ensures fluid action sequences and rapid response time. Every frame will be rendered smoothly with crystal clarity and without stutter
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
For that documented stale-fragment case, enable a full repaint on every frame:
- PowerShell:
$env:CLAUDE_CODE_ALT_SCREEN_FULL_REPAINT = "1", then runclaude. - macOS or Linux: run
CLAUDE_CODE_ALT_SCREEN_FULL_REPAINT=1 claude.
On Windows, Claude Code already enables full repaint for background sessions and agent view. The guide says the variable is needed only for a directly launched interactive fullscreen session. It is not a general fix for low contrast or every color problem.

- Clear visuals. Fluid motion: A 144Hz refresh rate and 1ms MPRT deliver smooth, tear‑free motion across work, gaming, and streaming for clearer, more fluid viewing.
- Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star* certification reduces harmful blue light while preserving stunning color quality without compromise. *TÜV Rheinland 3-star eye comfort certification.

- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
Compare the classic and fullscreen renderers
Run /tui to inspect the current renderer. Use /tui default to select the classic renderer, or /tui fullscreen to retry fullscreen. If fullscreen startup has repeatedly failed, Claude Code may stay on classic until an update or an explicit /tui fullscreen. Comparing the two helps isolate a renderer-specific problem; it does not guarantee that a color defect will be fixed.
Understand where Claude’s generated charts appear
If you asked “chart this for me” and no chart appeared, first check which Claude product surface you used. Anthropic describes custom charts, diagrams, and interactive visuals as HTML/SVG generated inline in Claude conversations, currently in beta on Claude web and desktop. The feature is not documented as a chart-rendering capability of the Claude Code terminal. Changing a terminal theme will not restore a missing web or desktop visual.

In web or desktop chat, ask directly for the visual and refine it with follow-up requests if needed. The Help Center’s Custom visuals in chat and Cowork article, dated April 22, 2026, cautions: “Visual quality and complexity will vary, and Claude may not always choose to generate a visual when you expect one.” The feature’s beta status and variable output mean a request does not guarantee a chart.
Use a Claude Code artifact when you need a web deliverable
Claude Code can publish session output as a live interactive artifact page, with examples such as a dashboard. That is a web artifact, separate from both the terminal renderer and the beta custom-visual feature in chat. See Anthropic’s Using artifacts with Claude Code guidance.

Escalate an unresolved theme or renderer problem
- Run
/doctorin Claude Code and note any reported problems. - Use
/feedbackto send a report; Anthropic’s FAQ also identifies/bugas a feedback route. Check the official Claude Code GitHub issues for related reports. - Include the Claude Code version, operating system, terminal application and version, whether the problem occurs in classic and fullscreen modes, and a minimal sequence of steps that reproduces it.
GitHub reports can suggest similar symptoms but do not establish that a report applies to your setup or current release. For example, issue #77080, opened July 13, 2026, describes low-contrast secondary text in /theme with macOS Terminal, a very dark “Night Owl” background, and Claude Code v2.1.207. The reporter said explicitly choosing dark mode did not resolve that instance; the issue page showed it open and stale when accessed. Separately, issue #60812, opened May 20, 2026, reports red background blocks obscuring text in Apple Terminal on macOS with Claude Code v2.1.145. Its reporter associated the onset with versions around v2.1.143/144, but the suggested ANSI-reset cause was speculation and the issue was closed as not planned.
