Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Compare the same modeled effect under the same scenario—not just two circles on a map. A blast-overpressure radius, thermal-exposure distance, prompt-radiation contour, and fallout plume describe different effects. To make a useful comparison, match the effect threshold, yield, burst type and height, units, and environmental assumptions, then treat the resulting boundaries as approximate model contours rather than precise predictions of real-world damage.
What does “blast radius” mean in a simulator?
“Blast radius” is not one universal measurement. It usually means the distance to a selected modeled threshold, and that threshold may refer to blast pressure, heat, radiation, or fallout. Those outputs are not interchangeable: a 5 psi overpressure ring cannot be compared directly with a thermal-exposure distance or a fallout-dose contour.
Start by identifying the map layer and the value displayed. NukeSimulator, for example, describes default overpressure rings at 20, 5, and 1 psi, with broad damage descriptions associated with each. Those are that tool’s model conventions, not guarantees about the damage or injuries at every location. NukeSimulator methodology
Normalize the inputs before comparing tools
Record the same scenario settings for every result. If a tool does not disclose a setting, mark it as unstated rather than assuming it matches another tool.

| Comparison item | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Effect | Overpressure, thermal exposure, prompt radiation, or fallout | Each is a different physical effect and map layer. |
| Threshold and units | The displayed value and its units—for example, overpressure in psi | A distance is meaningful only in relation to the threshold it represents. NukeSimulator describes 20, 5, and 1 psi overpressure rings. Source |
| Yield | Input yield and units | NukeSimulator describes blast-distance scaling with the cube root of yield, so a radius does not increase in direct proportion to yield. In its model explanation, an eightfold increase in yield corresponds to twice the pressure-ring distance; this is a scaling relationship, not a validation result for every real-world situation. Source |
| Burst configuration | Surface burst or airburst, plus actual burst height or the tool’s height setting | Changing burst height changes the effects being modeled. NUKEMAP’s FAQ says its airburst model can select an altitude to maximize a chosen overpressure radius, so note whether that optimization is enabled. NUKEMAP FAQ |
| Environmental assumptions | Terrain, weather, visibility, shielding, and construction assumptions where disclosed | These affect how modeled effects translate to a real location. HHS REMM identifies yield, topography, burst altitude, and weather as factors. HHS REMM |
| Fallout assumptions | Wind speed and direction, fission fraction, precipitation, terrain, and other disclosed inputs | Fallout depends on the scenario and does not form the same kind of circular boundary as a prompt effect. |
| Tool purpose | The tool’s stated intended use | An educational visualization should not be treated as an operational planning or safety instrument. |
Check what each tool assumes about the environment
A map can look precise while omitting conditions that matter. HHS REMM lists yield, site topography, burst altitude, and weather among the factors that affect the area and severity of effects. HHS REMM: Blast Range and Significant Effects
NukeSimulator says its effect rings are calculated for flat, open ground. Its methodology notes that buildings and terrain can shield thermal radiation or alter blast damage, and that its thermal model assumes reasonably clear atmospheric visibility. For fallout, it identifies yield, fission fraction, wind speed, and wind direction as inputs; it also notes that real patterns are influenced by winds at different altitudes, rain, and terrain. The site reports calibration for yields of roughly 1 kiloton to 20 megatons and cautions that estimates outside that span are less reliable. NukeSimulator methodology

These are reasons to compare documented assumptions, not evidence that one simulator is more accurate than another. The sources do not establish that the tools use identical equations or inputs, or provide a matched-scenario validation study that would support an accuracy ranking.
Compare fallout as a plume, not a radius
Prompt shockwave, heat, and initial radiation are often represented as roughly circular areas around a detonation, with effects changing by distance. Fallout behaves differently: it travels downwind in an irregular, often elliptical pattern. HHS REMM notes that fallout can travel hundreds of miles, while concentration and radiation decrease as it spreads and time passes. HHS REMM

For a fallout comparison, record the plume or dose-rate contour being shown and the wind and weather assumptions behind it. Do not summarize the plume with a single “blast radius” or compare its outer edge to a pressure ring.

Treat boundaries as approximate outputs of a model, not sharp edges separating safe from unsafe areas. NUKEMAP’s FAQ characterizes its effects estimates as back-of-the-envelope, order-of-magnitude estimates and says local conditions and assumptions can increase or decrease effects. Its FAQ also describes its fallout model as a scaling model whose results depend on variables including burst height, fission fraction, terrain, and weather, including wind shear at different altitudes. NukeSimulator likewise describes its casualty and damage outputs as rough order-of-magnitude estimates and says they are for education, not civil-defence planning. Its methodology cites openly published, declassified models and references including Glasstone and Dolan’s 1977 third edition, Fletcher scaling work, a 1979 U.S. Office of Technology Assessment report, and equations documented through NUKEMAP. A documented model basis helps explain a tool’s approach; it does not, by itself, establish that its map is a precise prediction. NukeSimulator methodology

A practical comparison workflow
- Choose one effect. Compare overpressure with overpressure, thermal exposure with thermal exposure, or the same type of radiation or fallout contour.
- Set a shared threshold and units. Write down the exact displayed threshold; do not infer it from a circle’s size.
- Match yield and burst settings. Record yield, surface or airburst, height, and any altitude optimization. If a tool automatically optimizes height, record that fact rather than treating it as an ordinary fixed-height result.
- Document environmental and model assumptions. Note terrain, weather, visibility, shielding, construction, population data, and fallout inputs wherever the tool discloses them. Use “not stated” for unavailable details.
- Compare outputs only after the settings are aligned. If an input cannot be matched or is not disclosed, label the comparison as limited and explain which difference may affect the result.
- Describe the result as an estimate. Give the modeled effect and threshold alongside any distance, and avoid presenting a boundary as a precise real-world damage limit.
