Yes—Elixir can be a good first programming language, especially if you want to learn functional programming and are curious about concurrent applications. You do not need to know Erlang first, and official learning resources include an introduction aimed at people with little or no programming experience. The fit depends on your goals: Elixir introduces ideas that may feel unfamiliar if you expect a conventional imperative or object-oriented course, and there is no evidence here to rank its beginner difficulty or job prospects against other languages.
Can you learn Elixir with no programming experience?
Yes. The official Elixir learning page lists Joy of Elixir as a gentle introduction for people with little-to-no programming experience, and says it teaches core Elixir concepts. That makes Elixir a viable starting point; it does not mean every beginner will find it easy or that it is the best choice for every goal.
You can also begin with the official web documentation and Elixir School, which describes its material as serving both first-time learners and experienced programmers. Buying a book is not a prerequisite.
What might feel different about learning Elixir?
Elixir is taught through functional programming: you work with functions and transform data explicitly. If your expectations come from an imperative or object-oriented course, you may need to adjust how you think about writing programs. The language is also part of an ecosystem built around the Erlang virtual machine and OTP, which supports concurrency and fault-tolerant applications.

Those differences are a question of fit, not a measured difficulty ranking. The available sources do not establish that Elixir is easier or harder than Python, JavaScript, or another first language. You can learn the basic language before tackling concurrency or OTP architecture.
Do you need to learn Erlang first?
No prerequisite to learn Erlang first is stated in the official Elixir materials. Elixir has its own Getting Started documentation and a first-project path using Mix and OTP. Erlang can be useful context as you learn more about the ecosystem, but it is optional when starting.

What should you learn first?
- Start with fundamentals: learn basic syntax, values, functions, pattern matching, and how to transform data.
- Follow a beginner-oriented resource: use the official learning page to find Getting Started material and a first project, or work through Elixir School.
- Build small programs: practice the core language before moving on to supervision trees, distributed systems, or production architecture.
Choose books according to their stated audience. The official learning page describes Joy of Elixir as suitable for people with little or no coding experience. By contrast, it says Elixir in Action assumes a few years of production experience with mainstream object-oriented languages. That book does not require prior Elixir, Erlang, or functional-programming knowledge, but its assumed experience makes it a less direct first resource for a complete novice.
Is Elixir a practical first language for your goals?
Choose based on what you want to learn, how you prefer to learn it, and what opportunities matter to you—not on a universal ranking. Elixir is a natural candidate if you are curious about functional programming, explicit data transformation, or the Erlang/OTP ecosystem. If your priority is a particular course, project community, or entry-level job market, compare those options in your own area. Available information here does not establish comparative beginner outcomes or geographically specific demand for Elixir jobs.

How do you install Elixir?
The official installation guide describes options including operating-system package managers, install scripts, and precompiled packages. Requirements change across releases, so use the live installation guide for current instructions rather than relying on a remembered command or an old tutorial.
When checked in 2026, the official documentation listed Elixir v1.20.4 as stable and Erlang/OTP 27, 28, and 29 as supported; the installation guide said Elixir v1.20.4 requires Erlang 27.0 or later. These are release compatibility details, not learning requirements that should be assumed to stay current.
